Frederick Delius' singing lines and rich harmonies evokes such sensuous moods and feelings that he is usually associated with the French Impressionists rather than with his English compatriots. Although the subjects of his works were often specific, Delius' music expresses, instead, the composer's emotional reactions to those subjects. This can be easily heard by listening to his On Hearing the First Cuckoo of Spring , or by reading the composer's own words in this regard, "Nothing is so wonderful as elemental feeling; nothing is more wonderful in art than elemental feeling expressed intensely."
Born in England in 1862, Delius' sojourn in Florida, studies in Germany, travels to Scandinavia, and eventual residency in France provided such diverse sources of musical inspiration that there remained little English flavor to his music. Delius' music evokes, instead, the immediacy of Black American folk songs, the passionate harmonies of Wagner, the romantic vistas of Grieg, and the evocative impressionism of Debussy. At the same time, Delius' music inhabits a world very much of its own. He is best known for tone poems, such as: Karanga, Summer Night on the River

Frederick Delius and Carl Schuricht
A few lines back I wrote the name of Delius. A British subject but of German origin, Delius had been intended by his parents for a commercial career. At the age of twenty he was working an orange plantation in Florida. It was there that he began to study music on his own, and then he left America to settle in Europe. I heard his Seadrift , based on the poem by Walt Whitman, performed at a festival held in Essen in I906 with the composer present. As I listened to this music, which is so undeservedly sneered at nowadays, I forgot orchestra, singers and audience and lost myself in a dream from which I only awoke the next morning I went to see Delius. He was a charming man, natural, sensitive and good-hearted.
, he said to me: "I have eight sisters..."
As for me, I declared to him,
"I haven't got an orchestra yet, but as soon as I have the first work I'll play is your Seadrift!
And I kept my promise, at Frankfurt, though I slightly rearranged the orchestration which I considered imperfect. Delius was in the audience again that evening.
He embraced me and said

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Delius, Frederick Delius, DEE lee uhs, Frederick (1862-1934), was an English composer. He wrote in many forms but is best known for compositions that combine chorus, vocal soloists, and orchestra. These works include Sea Drift (1906), based on the poetry of the American poet Walt Whitman; and A Mass of Life (1908-1909), based on texts by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Delius also composed chamber music, concertos, operas, songs, symphonic tone poems, and incidental music for plays. Important works include On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring (1913), Summer Night on the River (1913), and Fennimore and Gerda (written, 1909-1910; performed, 1919). Delius's finest music generates emotional power by blending simple melodies with rich and subtle harmonies.

(more info) Born in 1862 in Bradford of German parentage, Delius was sent by his father to Florida as an orange-grower. There he developed further his earlier musical interests and eventually persuaded his father to support him during a period of musical study at Leipzig Conservatory, where he met Grieg. With continued paternal support he moved thereafter to Paris and in 1897 settled at Grez-sur-Loing with the painter Jelka Rosen, who later became his wife. His final years brought blindness and paralysis, the result of an early syphilitic infection, and his later music was dictated to the young English musician Eric Fenby, who became his amanuensis. Delius had a strong champion in the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, who did much to bring his music before the British public. The musical language of Delius with a characteristic harmony and lyricism of its own often has a rhapsodic intensity of feeling.

Frederick Delius
A British composer of opera, vocal, choral, orchestral, and chamber music. The ear of the young Delius was engaged, one summer night in Florida, by the sound of close-harmony Afro-American singing gently wafting over the St. John River (he had been sent to manage an orange plantation). Delius suddenly realized that his vocation was to be a musician. A romantic with the musical vocabulary of the impressionists, he wrote often-imitated but never-matched tone poems of great subtlety and beauty in a very personal style that is not reducible to a formula. ~ Blue Gene Tyranny, All Music Guide Expand [+] dojo.byId('bio2').innerHTML = 'A British composer of opera, vocal, choral, orchestral, and chamber music. The musical language of Delius with a characteristic harmony and lyricism of its own often has a rhapsodic intensity of feeling. Stage Works The stage works of Delius include the lyric drama Koanga, a love- story set on a Mississippi plantation, where the heroine, the slave-girl Palmyra, rejects the advances of the overseer in favour of a prince of her own tribe, Koanga. La Calinda, from this opera, is a well known orchestral excerpt. The opera A Village Romeo and Juliet, based on a novel by Gottfried Keller, is generally known to concert-audiences because of the familiar orchestral interlude The Walk to the Paradise Garden, as the lovers walk together to a village inn. From the later opera Fennimore and Gerda comes an orchestral Intermezzo, arranged after the death of the composer by Eric Fenby. The opera Irmelin, first performed under Beecham only in 1953, offers an orchestral Prelude for concert repertoire. Incidental music for James Elroy Flecker's Hassan has again provided items for concert repertoire.

    Delius, Frederick
Delius, Frederick u s) [ key , English composer, of German parentage. Influenced by Grieg, Delius combined romanticism and impressionism in his music, which is characterized by rather free structure and rich chromatic harmony. From 1886 to 1888 he studied in Leipzig, where his suite Florida (1887) was first performed. His works were appreciated earlier in Germany than in his native land, but recognition in England did come in his later years. Among his finest works are the orchestral pieces
