12. Carl Czerny Teacher Composer (1791-1857)
A biography of carl czerny, listing his compositions and giving details of his career as a composer, pianist, and teacher.
http://www.carolinaclassical.com/czerny/index.html
by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
Remembered as the most famous piano student of Beethoven, Carl Czerny developed a reputation as one of the most significant piano teachers of the Nineteenth Century. Influenced by his own childhood studies (with Beethoven) of the pedagogical works of C.P.E. Bach and Beethoven's own Sonatas , Czerny strove to create new compositions based on these models. His later friendship with Muzio Clementi, whose teaching methods and exercises he adapted and incorporated into his own approach, proved to be of great influence in his career. And the mutual admiration between Fryderyk Chopin and Czerny, preserved in their correspondence, is evidence that Czerny's works were highly admired by many of his contemporaries.
When viewed strictly as a composer, Czerny's Symphonies have been much maligned by critics, and his choral music is largely unknown today. It is true that only in his works for piano solo and piano ensemble does his creativity truly soar. The "Beethoven-esque" quality of his Sonatas is quite evident. His chamber works for piano and other instruments also demonstrate his finest abilities as a composer. Standing in the shadow of Beethoven, Czerny was quite timid in genres other than his piano works, and some of his most charming music can be found in his

CZERNY, CARL BIOGRAPHY
Precociously gifted as a pianist, Carl Czerny studied as a ten-year-old with Beethoven and made his first public appearance in Vienna in 1800, when he played Mozart's C minor Piano Concerto. Impressed as he was by the performance style of Mozart, heard through Mozart's pupil Hummel, he nevertheless became a leading exponent of the piano music of Beethoven, with its demands for a legato style suited to the newer forms of the instrument. Czerny's principal fame, however, was as a teacher, his pupils including Thalberg, Liszt and Stephen Heller, and his pedagogical works had and continue to have wide currency. Piano Music Czerny's principal works were in the form of exercises and studies, of which he wrote a very large number, extending up to his Opus 861, Studies for the Left Hand. His other piano music consists of Sonatas and Sonatinas, with various medleys, variations and other shorter pieces. He wrote music for piano duet, and for up to four players, with many arrangements and transcriptions. Organ Music With his usual facility, Czerny wrote a certain amount of organ music, of which the Prelude and Fugue, Op. 603, No. 3, is a characteristic example.

Executive summary: Pianist, composer of piano exercises Austrian pianist and composer, born at Vienna on the 21st of February 1791. His father, who was a teacher of the piano, trained him for that instrument from an early age with such success that he performed in public at the age of nine, and commenced his own career as a teacher at fourteen. He was brought under the notice of Beethoven , and was his pupil in the sense in which the great master had pupils. It is perhaps his greatest claim to distinction as a performer that he was selected to be the first to play Beethoven's celebrated Emperor concerto in public. He soon became the most popular teacher of his instrument in a capital which abounded in pianists of the first rank. Among his pupils he numbered Franz Liszt , have probably had a wider circulation than any other works of their class. To the theory of music he contributed a translation of Reicha's
