Oh Brass on the Grass Alas
By Alvin Curran This article was written with Susan Levenstein. The composer and his 300-plus member band of German musicians ready to break into controlled chaos. (Photo: Susan Levenstein)
One gray November Sunday morning in 1953 I was marching down Dorrance Street in Providence, R.I., playing the “Colonel Bogey March” (a tune later heard in “Bridge on the River Kwai”) in a local National Guard Band of about 15 musicians led by my high-school music teacher Eddie McCabe. I was a mere kid — they needed an extra trombonist. As the band was about to pass the viewing stand — mind you this was my first and last appearance in military clothing, including an ill-fitting helmet that sat mostly over my eyes — I went for a low C-flat, a note only playable in seventh position, the one where you push the slide to the near end of its fixed tubing, but the slide kept going, flying magically from my hands and to wit from the trombone — dropping, like-oh-my-god, klunk, to the indifferent asphalt… The band kept going and in view of the city’s mayor I had to dash back, retrieve the slide, and run like crazy to catch up with the show. This epochal adolescent trombone blunder was yet another instance of me publicly losing control of my own music making. At the time it was an enormous embarrassment, but in later years a controlled lack of control has become an eminent characteristic of my music and the music of many of my friends.

Alvin Curran's music-making embraces all the contradictions (composed/improvised, tonal/atonal, maximal/minimal...) in a serene dialectical encounter. His nearly 100 works feature taped/sampled natural sounds, piano, synthesizers, computers, violin, percussion, shofar, ship horns, accordion and chorus. Whether in the intimate form of his well-known solo performances, or pure chamber music, experimental radio works or large-scale site-specific sound environments and installations, all forge a very personal language through recombinant invention. Curran was born December 13, 1938, in Providence, Rhode Island. From age five he was involved in piano lessons, trombone, marching bands, Synagogue chants, Jazz, and his father's dance bands. He studied composition with Ron Nelson (B.A. Brown University 1960) and with Elliott Carter and Mel Powell (M.Mus., Yale School of Music l963). In the MUSICA ELETTRONICA VIVA years (1966 -1971 in Rome), Curran performed in over 200 concerts in Europe and the USA with Teitelbaum and Rzewski, Carol Plantamura, Ivan Vandor, Alan Bryant and Jon Phetteplace; and makes significant artistic encounters with: Giuseppe Chiari, Edith Schloss, AMM, Cardew, Steve Lacy, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Steve ben Israel, Anthony Braxton, Simone Forti, Steve Reich, Joan LaBarbara, Michael Nyman, La Monte Young, Trisha Brown, Ashley, Behrman, Gordon Mumma, Alvin Lucier, Larry Austin, Bill Smith, Ketoff, Robert Moog, Nuova Consonanza, MEV2, Meme Perlini, Mario Ricci, Maria Monti, Prima Materia, Ron Bunzl, Phil Glass, Charlemagne Palestine, Terry Riley, George Lewis, Evan Parker, Gregory Reeves, Serge Tcherepnin, Kosugi, Pulsa, Maryanne Amacher, John Cage, David Tudor, and Morton Feldman.

Endangered Species (1993). Alvin Curran /not this record!/
A post on aworks citing the work Endangered Species by Alvin Curran incorrectly linked to an Amazon-stocked CD entitled "Lost Marbles" containing the work Endangered Species by Alvin Curran. The work Endangered Species by Alvin Curran on that CD was not the intended subject of the post and should not be seen as an endorsement for or against said CD. Instead, the post was describing the work Endangered Species by Alvin Curran, as played by pianist Bruce Brubaker on another Amazon-stocked CD , entitled "Inner Cities." The connection between these two selections is unclear and a quick trip to Rasputin Records did not provide the necessary source recording to ascertain just what was the compositional intent.
aworks welcomes comments and suggestions, or complaints about errors that warrant correction. aworks further regrets that the Amazon thumbnail for the Bruce Brubaker CD does not appear properly on the aworks site although the thumbnail for the incorrect CD works fine. argh.

Artist: CURRAN, ALVIN Title: Inner Cities Label: LONG DISTANCE (FRANCE) Format: Price: Catalog #: LONG 560304 Performed by Daan Vandewalle (piano), 4 hours, 24 minutes worth. "Alvin Curran's music-making embraces all the contradictions (composed/improvises, tonal/atonal, maximal/minimal) in a serene dialectical encounter. His more than 100 works feature taped/sampled natural sounds, piano, synthesizers, computers, violin, percussion, shofar, ship horns, accordion and chorus. Whether in the intimate form of his well-known solo performances, or pure chamber music, experimental radio works or large-scale site-specific sound environments and installations, all forge a very personal language from all the languages through dedicated research and recombinant invention. The composer says of Inner Cities 'This music is open, unhurried, brutally lyrical, quiet, private, and tonal as it is raucous, aggressively impolite and obsessively meticulous in making the simple relations between tones and durations an unending adventure of personal wonder. My goal, as always, was to reduce the musical elements to their ultimate essences, to repudiate and embrace dualism, and to emulate, even in permanent notation, the feel of spontaneous music-making.'
