Paul Creston was born 10 October 1906 in New York of Italian parentage. Entirely self-taught with the exception of piano and organ lessons in his youth, Creston pursued studies in theory, composition, literature, and philosophy while working to support himself and his poor immigrant family. Fiercely independent by nature, the composer developed his style free of any particular school of thought or teacher's influence and made rhythm a cornerstone of his work, often emphasizing shifting subdivisions of regular meters. He created works in many genres including five symphonies, concertos for violin, piano, saxophone, and marimba, several dance works, songs, and choral, chamber, and instrumental pieces.
Creston considered his greatest "teachers" to be Bach, Scarlatti, Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel. He wrote in an accessible, conservative style that incorporated song and dance idioms and often featured unusual instruments like the trombone, marimba, or saxophone. Lush harmonies and expansive orchestrations characterize an often brash and spontaneous body of work, organized around a remarkable mastery of thematic development evident in works such as the Symphony No. 2

He was an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity, initiated into the national honorary Alpha Alpha chapter. His work tends to be fairly conservative in style, firmly tonal (as opposed to atonal ) in style, and with a strong rhythmic element. His pieces include six symphonies , a number of concertos , including two for violin , one for marimba , one for two pianos , one for accordion and one for alto saxophone , a fantasia for trombone and orchestra (composed for and premiered by Robert Marsteller ), and a Rapsodie again for alto saxophone - written for famous virtuoso Jean-Marie Londeix . He also wrote a sonata for alto saxophone (dedicated to Cecil Leeson ). Several of his works were inspired by the poetry of Walt Whitman . Creston was the most performed American composer of the 1940s. citation needed Several of Creston's works have become staples of the wind band repetoire. Zanoni, Prelude and Dance, and the Celebration Overture have been and still are on several state lists for contests across the USA.

Peter Vinograde, piano Paul Creston , whose original name was Giuseppe Guttoveggio, was born in New York City in 1906 and died in 1985. He was born the son of a poor house-painter. As a child he took lessons on the piano and later, on the organ, and began writing music on his own at the age of eight. Forced to leave school at 15 in order to earn a living, he attempted to compensate for the premature termination of his formal education by subjecting himself to a strenuous regimen of independent study, teaching himself music theory and composition, in addition to a number of other academic and artistic subjects. Creston vacillated between music and literature as career options for several years; not until 1932, at age 26, did he decide upon musical composition as a vocation. He supported himself during these years by playing the organ to accompany silent films, and later took a position as church organist, which he held for many years. In view of Creston’s isolation from influential musical institutions, his meteoric rise to national prominence is quite remarkable. In 1938 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, and in 1941 he won the New York Music Critics’ Circle Award. In 1942, Arturo Toscanini conducted his Choric Dance No. 2 with the NBC Symphony, in 1943 Eugene Ormandy conducted his Symphony No. 1 with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and in 1944 Creston completed his Symphony No. 2, premiered the following year by Artur Rodzinski and the New York Philharmonic. One of his most important works, this symphony brought him international acclaim; by this time Creston was one of America’s most widely performed composers.

CRESTON, PAUL BIOGRAPHY
Paul Creston was born Giuseppe Guttoveggio in New York City in 1906. His father had come to the States from Sicily and was employed as a house painter. During his childhood, Creston visited Sicily with his mother, where he was exposed to the folk songs and dances of the Sicilian peasants and his love of music was awakened. Upon his return to the States, he persuaded his parents to let him begin music lessons. The precocious Creston quickly surpassed the abilities of his teacher and by the age of fourteen began to seek his own way. Around this time, he made his first attempts at composition, though his dreams of a musical career were cut short when he was forced to drop out of high school at the age of fifteen in order to help support his family. Along with his fellow immigrant sons, Walter Piston and Peter Mennin, young Giuseppe decided to "Americanize" his name. Having earned the nickname "Cress" from playing the part of Crespino in a school play, he expanded it to Creston and the name "Paul" was chosen because he liked the sound of it. While working as an errand boy, and later as a bank clerk and as insurance claim examiner, he would rise early and work late into the night, practicing piano and composing. Driven by the desire for self-improvement, Creston would smoke ground coffee beans in order to keep awake while he read the classics of history, literature and philosophy. Creston’s first employment as a musician occurred from 1926 through 1929, when he was worked as a theater organist for silent movies. Following the introduction of talkies, Creston was appointed organist of St. Malachy’s Church in New York, a post he was to occupy for the next thirty-three years.

Born to Italian immigrant parents in New York City, he was essentially a self-taught composer because of poor family finances. In addition to composing, Creston worked as a movie theater organist and was organist at St. Malachy's Church in New York from 1934 to 1967. In 1968, he became artist-in-residence at Central Washington State College. During this time, he appeared as guest conductor and lecturer at over 40 colleges and universities across the country. Creston wrote 120 compositions with opus numbers and over 35 orchestral works including 6 symphonies. He is especially recognized for his contributions to the literature of neglected instruments such as marimba, trombone, harp, accordion, and saxophone. Creston also composed works without opus numbers, especially for radio, television, and film. He composed for the
