Nationality American Occupation Composer musical theorist pianist , teacher, publisher, and impresario Henry Cowell March 11 December 10 ) was an American composer musical theorist pianist , teacher, publisher, and impresario. His contribution to the world of music was summed up by Virgil Thomson , writing in the early 1950s: Henry Cowell's music covers a wider range in both expression and technique than that of any other living composer. His experiments begun three decades ago in rhythm, in harmony, and in instrumental sonorities were considered then by many to be wild. Today they are the Bible of the young and still, to the conservatives, "advanced."... No other composer of our time has produced a body of works so radical and so normal, so penetrating and so comprehensive. Add to this massive production his long and influential career as a pedagogue, and Henry Cowell's achievement becomes impressive indeed. There is no other quite like it. To be both fecund and right is given to few.

COWELL, HENRY DIXON
The Banshee from the mid-1920s, played directly on the strings of the piano. He founded (1927) New Music Edition, a quarterly publishing music by contemporary American and European composers. In 1931, with the help of Leon Theremin (see electronic music ), he invented the rhythmicon, a device that produces various rhythms and cross-rhythms mechanically, for which he wrote a concerto (1932). An interest in counterpoint produced the five Hymns and Fuguing Tunes American Composers on American Music (1933). He also wrote on numerous musical subjects and was an influential teacher whose many students included John Cage , George Gershwin , and Alan Hovhaness . In the late 1950s he and his ethnomusicologist wife traveled throughout the Middle East, India, and Japan collecting musical materials, which he later incorporated into compositions. Born: Died:
A tireless musical explorer and inventor, Henry Cowell was born 11 March 1897 in Menlo Park, California, where he grew up surrounded by a wide variety of Oriental musical traditions, his father's Irish folk heritage, and his mother's Midwestern folktunes. Already composing in his early teens, Cowell began formal training at age 16 with Charles Seeger at the University of California. Further studies focused primarily on world music cultures. His use of varied sound materials, experimental compositional procedures, and a rich palette colored by multiple non-European and folk influences revolutionized American music and popularized, most notably, the tone cluster as an element in compositional design.
In addition to tone clusters evident in such works as Advertisement and Tiger , Cowell experimented with the "string piano" in works like The Aeolian Harp and The Banshee where strings are strummed or plucked inside the piano. Studies of the musical cultures of Africa, Java, and North and South India enabled Cowell to stretch and redefine Western notions of melody and rhythm; mastery of the gamelan and the theory of gamelan composition led to further explorations with exotic instruments and percussion. Later, Cowell developed the concept of indeterminancy or "elastic form" in works like the

COWELL, HENRY BIOGRAPHY
His pianistic techniques continue to influence countless younger composers; his fascination with extra-European music was an inspiration to many composers beginning with John Cage and Lou Harrison . Among the many intriguing ideas in Cowell's extraordinary theoretical treatise New Musical Resources, begun when he was about 20 years old and finally published in 1930, are far-reaching concepts of the linking of pitch and rhythm that were the foundation of the masterful player-piano music of Conlon Nancarrow . The finest music in his immense portfolio is thoroughly melodious, quirky, and among the most user-friendly of the mid-20th century.

Biography
Henry Cowell (1897-1965)
Many facets of Cowell's remarkable personality resulted from the unusual circumstances of his upbringing. His father, upper-class Irish immigrant Harry Cowell, drifted to California after the failure of an orchard in British Columbia, given to him by his own father, the Dean of Kildare Cathedral. There he married Clarissa Dixon, who had fled to the West Coast from her Midwestern farming family. The couple have been characterized as philosophical anarchists: both were writers, and neither believed in conventional schooling. Their home was a cottage in a rural area southeast of San Francisco; Henry Cowell was born there, and it remained his principal base until 1936. After showing early musical talent, from the age of five Cowell received violin lessons, with the idea that he might become a prodigy. The pressure proved too great however, and with the onset of juvenile chorea, the lessons stopped after three years. His parents divorced in 1903, and following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, he and his mother lived (mainly with relatives) in Iowa, New York and eventually Kansas, where he had access to a piano. Three decades later, he recalled this period in the

Subversive Prophet: Henry Cowell as Theorist and Critic
By Kyle Gann Excerpts from the article published in The Whole World of Music: A Henry Cowell Symposium , David Nicholls, editor (Harwood Academic Press, 1997) What the cynics claim of John Cage may be truer of Henry Cowell: that he is more important for his writings and ideas than for his music. In Cage's case, those of us deeply attached to Sonatas and Interludes , the 1950 String Quartet, Music of Changes Hymnkus Europeras I-V , and other beautiful and influential compositions find the cliche ludicrously unfounded. Applied to Cowell, though, the statement might hold water, if only because Cowell's compositional output has never become as well known or widely distributed as Cage's. Though often impressive, in the role of composer Cowell appears as a minor figure in the august company of Ives, Stravinsky, Varese, Schoenberg, and others of his time. As a musical thinker, however, and theorist of new musical possibilities, he is a giant in a virtual desert, towering above all his contemporaries with the possible exception of Schoenberg (and at present, Cowell's speculations look to be more prophetic and enduring than Schoenberg's, whose influence is no longer in the ascendant). It is not difficult to argue that Cowell was the least tradition-bound, most original musical thinker and theorist of his era. Much of what was best in Cowell's legacy can be found in his writings and publications: his theory books New Musical Resources and

Cowell, Henry (1897-1965) American composer, pianist, theorist, and teacher Henry Dixon Cowell was an important musical innovator who sought to create an "ultramodern" style based on the synthesis of Western, Asian, and African music. His brilliant career as composer and performer was severely damaged when he was arrested at the age of 39 for having sex with a seventeen-year-old male and subsequently imprisoned. The circumstances of Cowell's upbringing were unusual and influenced his personal and musical perspectives throughout his life. He was born on March 11, 1897 in Menlo Park, California, then a rural area southeast of San Francisco. For many years, he made his primary residence in Menlo Park. Cowell's parents, who divorced in 1903, were writers of anarchist bent who provided him with home schooling. Sponsor Message.

Dynamic Motion (1914). Henry Cowell /otherworldly yet noisy/
Roger Bourland as Hector Berlioz writes another letter to singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright describing his (Roger/Hector's) recent conversation about the pop star with the late Charles Ives: But he DID bail Henry Cowell out of prison, so perhaps he is more tolerant than he acts. He kept shouting obnoxious phrases like “take your dissonance like a man.” Ok, presumably Roger, er Hector, didn't just talk with Charles Ives but it's easy to imagine Ives saying that. In my mind though, it's the music of Cowell rather than Ives that tests tolerance for this type of harmony. Think of it as a spiritual tonic. An Amazon reviewer suggests pianist Chris Brown performs Cowell's Dynamic Motion by doing "methodical full-body slams." Although we (I) may be living in chaotic times, tonight anyway I'm enjoying this piece. Next up this evening: Link Wray's
