François Couperin 1668-1733
Also known as "le Grand" to distinguish him from his larger family of musicians, François Couperin became organist of Saint-Gervais in the year of Bach's birth and advanced to the royal chapel of Louis XIV in 1693, eight years later. In 1701 Couperin was promoted to chamber musician and music master to the royal family. While Couperin did compose motets and other sacred music for voices, he bequeathed a superior repertory for the harpsichord; his Pièces de clavecin (1713-30) and L'art de toucher le clavecin (1717) are monuments of harpsichord literature and technique. In 1802 Bach's first biographer, Forkel , wrote: "Bach knew Couperin's works and valued them . . . because one can learn from them a neat and graceful keyboard technique."

The most famous member of a family of excellent French musicians, Couperin was known as le grand to distinguish him from an uncle of the same name. He officially succeeded his uncle and father as organist at St. Gervais church in Paris when he was eighteen. He enjoyed royal patronage under Louis XIV and, in 1693, was appointed royal organist and harpsichordist. He won fame as a composer of sacred works and of music for the harpsichord. MIDI FILE - "Les Papillons" Couperin was greatly admired by Johann Sebastian Bach who arranged one of his trios for the organ. François Couperin Works Couperin composed church music for the royal chapel under Louis XIV. The surviving Leçons de ténèbres are possibly the best example of this form of composition, the first of the three for soprano solo and continuo and the third for two sopranos, settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah for the Holy Week liturgy. Couperin's chamber music includes L'apothéose de Lully, a tribute

French composer, harpsichordist, and organist, the most distinguished of his family, known as 'Couperin le Grand' because of his prowess as an organist. Taught by his father Charles and by Jacques Thomelin. Became organist of St. Gervais, succeeded Thomelin as organist of Royal chapel, with the title 'organiste du Roi'. In 1717, became 'ordinaire de la musique de la chambre du Roi', acknowledgement of his special position in the court. On almost every Sunday, Couperin and colleagues gave chamber concerts for the king, for which he composed what he called 'concerts'. These are in the form of suites and may have been intented for the harpsichord, of which he he was a virtuoso, but were probably performed on violin, viol, oboe, bassoon, and harpsichord. Couperin was greatly influenced by Corelli and introduced into France the Italian's trio-sonata form, himself publishing in 1726 Les Nations , a set of 4 suites for 2 violins and harpsichord. Also composed 'grand trio sonata' sub-titled Le Parnasse, ou l'Apothéose de Corelli

A three-minute fantasy of butterflies and dragonflies cavorting amongst the pussywillows, Japanese-inspired animation accompanied by two variations on keyboard works by the Baroque composer. Uses a pointillist technique to provide a stroboscopic illusion where recognizable shapes become fluid abstractions, and where time is stretched to reveal the main patterns of the choreography. Exhibits a visual haiku wherein an invisible air current stirs the leaves of grass and blows back the butterflies. For more on director Philip Stapp, visit www.afana.org/stapp.htm

This had strong influence on Bach. His 4 pubd. vols. of hpd. works contain over 230 pieces which proclaim him a supreme master of the kbd. Most have picturesque or descriptive titles and are like miniature tone-poems. This perhaps is a clue to their appeal to Richard Strauss, who orchestrated several Couperin pieces. A
B ... Z FRANÇOIS COUPERIN LE GRAND (1668 - 1733) François Couperin was born in Paris in 1668, the son of Charles Couperin (1638-79), the organist St Gervais in Paris. On his father's premature death the organist position was held by Lalande. François, an early musical genius, was already deputizing for Lalande at the age of ten, and on his 18th birthday he officially inherited his father's previous position. As his teacher, Lalande praised the young man's innovative 1690 collection of Pièces d'orgue as 'worthy of being given to the public' and no doubt helped to establish him as a Court organist in 1693. In 1700-17 he acquired the younger D'Anglebert's position as harpsichordist at Versailles. Couperin divided his time between Paris and Versailles. He soon acquired heavy commitments to teach the harpsichord and organ which made it difficult to find time for the publication of his vocal and instrumental chamber music. After the appearance in 1690 of his Pièces d'orgue (in manuscript copies with engraved title pages), he wrote no further works for organ. Instead he turned his attention to the import of the Italian sonatas and cantatas being performed in private concerts during the 1690s; his own trio and quartet sonades in the Corellian style - some of which were absorbed into his 1726 collection Les nations - were initially circulated in manuscripts under an anagram of his name.
