French composer, organist, and harpsichordist. His grandfather Charles Couperin (ca. 1595-1654) settled in Chaumes, where he was proprietor of a plot of land and for this privilege held the title Sieur de Crouilly. In 1622 Charles married Marie Andry of Brie. Four of their eight children became prominent musicians: Louis only the engraved title page (attached to a manuscript copy) survives. In 1693 the composer was named one of the four organistes du roi for the royal chapel, replacing the recently deceased Thomelin. His salary, at 600 livres, represented an important social and economic advance for Couperin; soon he was also tutoring the royal family in harpsichord, including the Dauphin, the Duke of Burgundy, and others. He was also chamber musician for the court, perhaps filling in for the ailing d'Alembert; it was in this context that works such as the Concerts royaux were first conceived. Already in 1690 the composer was using the noble title Couperin de Crouilly; an offer of purchase of nobility by Louis XIV (in 1696) enabled Couperin to make the title official. During the next two decades Couperin established himself as one of the leading harpsichordists of his day; he also composed church and chamber music during the king's final years. Although official appointments were slow in coming to Couperin (possibly because he did not pursue them with much vigor), in 1717 he was finally appointed to d'Alembert's post as maitre de clavecin du roi.

BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS as 'worthy of being given to the public' and no doubt helped to establish him as a Court organist in 1693. In 1700-17 he acquired the younger D'Anglebert's position as harpsichordist at Versailles. Couperin divided his time between Paris and Versailles. He soon acquired heavy commitments to teach the harpsichord and organ which made it difficult to find time for the publication of his vocal and instrumental chamber music. After the appearance in 1690 of his (in manuscript copies with engraved title pages), he wrote no further works for organ. Instead he turned his attention to the import of the Italian sonatas and cantatas being performed in private concerts during the 1690s; his own trio and quartet sonades in the Corellian style - some of which were absorbed into his 1726 collection Les nations Couperin's interest in the Italian style, as represented by Carissimi and distilled by Charpentier, influenced his sacred vocal music, particularly his motets, versets and into ordres rather than suites, and relied much less on dance movements than his contemporaries, preferring the freer and more evocative

Much of his work was written for the harpsichord, a keyboard instrument resembling a piano, in which the strings are plucked. For this instrument, Couperin wrote 27 ordres (suites) containing more than 200 highly imaginative, picturesque, and elegant pieces. Johann Sebastian Bach studied and sometimes imitated Couperin's style. Couperin also wrote chamber music and church music. In 1716, he published a harpsichord instruction book that is still used by students of the instrument.
