Arcangelo Corelli 1653-1713
Corelli was appointed violinist at San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome in 1713. In 1685 (the year of Bach's birth) Corelli became director of violins, a position that he held for the next twenty-four years. It is reported that in 1672 Corelli visited Paris but soon left because of Lully's jealousy. After 1699 Corelli worked for the Elector of Bavaria where he taught the young violin virtuoso Pisendel . Writing almost exclusively for the violin or string ensemble (primarily trio sonatas or sonatas for the violin), Corelli's works represent a critical link in the evolution of the baroque concerto grosso and sonata forms. Bach's instrumental style was clearly influenced by them, as was that of Corelli's other students Geminiani Locatelli , and Handel (who met Corelli when he visited Italy between 1706-1710).

Brief biography for the Italian composer and violinist.
http://library.thinkquest.org/C008695F/english/img004.htm
ARCANGELO CORELLI
The Italian composer and violinist Arcangelo Corelli exercised a wide influence
on his contemporaries and on the succeeding generation of composers. Born in
Fusignano, Italy, in 1653, a full generation before Bach or Handel, he studied in
Bologna, a distinguished musical centre, then established himself in Rome in the
1670s. By 1679 had entered the service of Queen Christina of Sweden, who had
taken up residence in Rome in 1655, after her abdication the year before, and had
established there an academy of literati that later became the Arcadian Academy.
Thanks to his musical achievements and growing international reputation he
found no trouble in obtaining the support of a succession of influential patrons.
History has remembered him with such titles as "Founder of Modern Violin Technique," the "World's First Great Violinist," and the "Father of the Concerto Grosso." His contributions can be divided three ways, as violinist, composer, and teacher. It was his skill on the new instrument known as the violin and his extensive and very popular concert tours throughout Europe which did most to give that instrument its prominent place in music. It is probably correct to say that Corelli's

Executive summary: Concerti Grossi Handel 's Trionfo del Tempo , and took serious offense when the composer played the note in evidence of its practicability. His compositions for the instrument mark an epoch in the history of chamber music; for his influence was not confined to his own country. Even Johann Sebastian Bach submitted to it. Musical society in Rome owed much to Corelli. He was received in the highest circles of the aristocracy, and arranged and for a long time presided at the celebrated Monday concerts in the palace of Cardinal Ottoboni. Corelli died possessed of a sum of 120,000 marks and a valuable collection of pictures, the only luxury in which he had indulged. He left both to his benefactor and friend, who, however, generously made over the money to Corelli's relations. Corelli's compositions are distinguished by a beautiful flow of melody and by a masterly treatment of the accompanying parts, which he is justly said to have liberated from the strict rules of counterpoint. Six collections of concrti, sonatas and minor pieces for violin, with accompaniment of other instruments, besides several concerted pieces for strings, are authentically ascribed to this composer. The most important of these is the

At a time when the violin was replacing the viola, Arcangelo Corelli was in great demand. Writing almost exclusively for the violin or string ensemble, Corelli's works represent a critical link in the evolution of the baroque concerto grosso and sonata forms. Compared to other violinist-composers, Corelli eschewed virtuosity. He was firmly in control of the language of tonality, but not all movements are tonally closed. A traditional distinction between sacred and secular pieces is maintained in each collection in terms of the character of most movements and the scoring; but dance movements may appear in church sonatas and fugal movements in chamber works. In fact, there was little precedent in Italian prints for such chamber sonatas as those of Corelli; the precedents are from Germany and England. He published only five volumes during his lifetime. In the late 17th and 18th centuries Corelli's reputation as a performer and teacher was at least equal to the reputation he achieved as a composer. Italian and foreign students contributed to the dissemination of his works and his style of playing. His sonatas were widely performed and often reprinted, both as ideal practice material for students and as models for composers. He greatly influenced succeeding generations of composers, especially Handel who worked with him for a short time in Rome.

Arcangelo Corelli, 17th Century Superstar
Few musicians of the seventeenth century enjoyed the exalted status bestowed on Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713). He was called the ‘new Orpheus of Our Times’ and the ‘divine Arc Angelo’, a clever pun on his Christian name and the Italian word for a bow (arco). The Englishman musician and writer Roger North described Corelli’s music as ‘transcendant’, ‘immortal’ and ‘the bread of life’ to musicians. Renowned as a virtuoso performer, an influential composer, and sought-after teacher, Corelli commanded respect and praise throughout Europe at the turn of the 18th century.
The fifth child born to a prosperous family of landowners in Fusignano; Corelli’s first musical study was probably with the local clergy, then in nearby Lugo and Faenza, and finally in Bologna, where he went in 1666. In Bologna he studied with Giovanni Benvenuti and Leonardo Brugnoli, the former representing the disciplined style of the Accademia filarmonica (to which Corelli was admitted in 1670), the latter a virtuoso violinist.
By 1675 Corelli was in Rome where he may have studied composition under Matteo Simonelli, from whom he would have absorbed the styles of Roman polyphony inherited from Palestrina. He may have traveled to France and Spain, though neither journey has been securely documented. In 1675 he is listed as a violinists in Roman payment documents and by the end of the decade he was active as a performer and leader of small and large instrumental ensembles in Roman homes and churches and at public celebrations.

Italian composer and violinist. He studied in Bologna from 1666, and was admitted to the Accademia Filarmonica at 17. By 1675 he was in Rome, where he became the foremost violinist and a chamber musician to Queen Christina of Sweden, to whom he dedicated his 12 trio sonatas da chiesa op.1 (1681). His 12 trio sonatas da camera op.2 (1685) were dedicated to Cardinal Pamphili; Corelli was his music master, 1687-90. His next patron, Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, received the dedication of the trio sonatas op.4 (1694). Corcilli came to dominate Rome musical life, and also directed opera performances there and in Naples. After 1708 he retired from public view.
