41. Aaron Copland Icon Of American Culture 1900-1990
Biography from The Timid Soul s Guide to Classical Music showing his importance in moving America away from overpowering European influences.

Aaron Copland: Icon of American culture 1900-1990
American composers wrote with a German accent in the 19th century, and adopted a more fashionable French accent early in the 20th century. Only with the 1930s work of Aaron Copland did American music find its own loping voice. Copland's music just before, during and after World War II defined the American style. Great Americana film scores from Elmer Bernstein's ``To Kill a Mockingbird'' and ``The Magnificent Seven'' to Randy Newman's ``The Natural'' are homages to the Copland sound and attitude. Copland himself wrote eight film scores, including ``Of Mice and Men,'' ``The Red Pony'' and ``The Heiress.'' But he really launched the Americana movement not on the silver screen but in the concert hall and on the ballet stage. His greatest strength as a composer was his simplicity of expression, his ability to make a musical point memorably but without fuss. That's why three of his six ballet scores - ``Rodeo,'' ``Billy the Kid'' and ``Appalachian Spring'' - are loved even by people who hate modern music. Copland's first works, in the 1920s and '30s, were self-consciously avant-garde for their time, with brashly dissonant harmonies. Copland was committed to tonality, but primitivism had been in vogue since Stravinsky's ``The Rite of Spring'' premiered just before World War I.

Best-known American Classical Music Composer of the 20th-Century
Tel Asiado Nov 15, 2007
Brief biography of American composer and music teacher Aaron Copland, his life, film scores and list of works. Famous for ballet Appalachian Spring.
Aaron Copland is considered America's best-known 20th century composer of classical music in terms of vividly portraying the wide open spaces of America, putting to memory the lives of pioneers and legends of the Wild West. Copland was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 14, 1900, a son of Russian Jewish immigrants. He started his musical lessons with Rubin Goldmark in New York and with the famous French teacher Nadia Boulanger , in Paris, then returned to New York.

Composer of the American West

The soundtrack of many an old Western film owes a great debt to Aaron Copland, a twentieth-century composer strongly associated with creating "Americana."
Perhaps you are familiar with how the Wild West "sounds." The fiddle with foot-stompin' rhythms can be found in the soundtracks of many old Westerns. But how did this sound develop as a key signifier of "Americana"? Elmer Bernstein (1922-2004), an American film composer, might be credited with making this American Western sound popular in the film world. The soundtrack to The Magnificent Seven (1960) is full of fiddles, percussion instruments that imitate hoof clip-clops, and Mexican-based rhythms and instruments (such as the maracas and Spanish guitar). In fact, he received a Western Heritage Award for his score to that film.

Heckscher Museum of Art Huntington, Long Island, NY www.heckscher.org Aaron Copland's America November 4, 2000 - January 21, 2001 T hrough compositions such as Appalachian Spring, Rodeo, Billy the Kid, El Salon Mexico, Fanfare for the Common Man , and Lincoln Portrait, Aaron Copland pioneered a distinctive American sound and spirit. He created music which stemmed from his fascination with American folk themes and multiculturalism. Copland's music was revolutionary in that it reflected the strands and diversity of the many cultures which comprise the American landscape. He was influenced by visual and literary artists, and in turn, influenced the work of many others. On the centennial of his birth (November 14, 1900), Heckscher Museum of Art presents a sweeping three-gallery exhibition which includes depictions of Aaron Copland by American artists and photographers, and also explores the impact of Copland's American spirit through works by many American and European artists who were influenced by Copland's music, or who were similarly intrigued by the growing sense of a uniquely American spirit and aesthetic. Aaron Copland and His World
Shopping Cart Reviews Aaron Copland and His World reassesses the legacy of one of America's best-loved composers at a pivotal momentas his life and work shift from the realm of personal memory to that of history. This collection of seventeen essays by distinguished scholars of American music explores the stages of cultural change on which Copland's long life (1900 to 1990) unfolded: from the modernist experiments of the 1920s, through the progressive populism of the Great Depression and the urgencies of World War II, to postwar political backlash and the rise of serialism in the 1950s and the cultural turbulence of the 1960s. Continually responding to an ever-changing political and cultural panorama, Copland kept a firm focus on both his private muse and the public he served. No self-absorbed recluse, he was very much a public figure who devoted his career to building support systems to help composers function productively in America. This book critiques Copland's work in these shifting contexts. Carol J. Oja

Music Division "Fanfare for the Common Man" was certainly Copland's best known concert opener. He wrote it in response to a solicitation from Eugene Goosens for a musical tribute honoring those engaged in World War II. Goosens, conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, originally had in mind a fanfare "... for Soldiers, or for Airmen or Sailors" and planned to open his 1942 concert season with it. Aaron Copland later wrote, "The challenge was to compose a traditional fanfare, direct and powerful, yet with a contemporary sound." To the ultimate delight of audiences Copland managed to weave musical complexity with popular style. He worked slowly and deliberately, however, and the piece was not ready until a full month after the proposed premier. The Aaron Copland School of Music offers a liberal arts music major and a major in performance, an additional sequence in music education, and a cultural music major; music minors in music literature or theory; and a concentration in composition. The curriculum is planned to develop the interdependent skills of performing, listening to, and understanding music, and thus to provide the thorough training so necessary for graduate study and an eventual career in the profession.
The School gives all students of the college a finer appreciation of music by broadening their experience in listening and participating. Courses in appreciation and the rudiments of music are available for the general student without previous training in music; other courses and performing ensembles are open to qualified nonmajors.

Return to BalletNotes Home Page Aaron Copland (1900 - 1990), composer Copland's parents came to the United States from villages in Polish and Lithuanian Russia. His father's name was Anglicized from Kaplan to Copland during his time in England en route to the United States. The family owned a store in Brooklyn and prospered. Aaron was their fifth child, born on November 14, 1900, seven years after his nearest sister. After learning what he could of the piano at home, young Aaron enrolled himself in study with Leopold Wolfsohn, with whom he remained three years, before advancing to study with Victor Wittgenstein and Clarence Adler. Beginning in 1917 he began studying harmony, counterpoint and sonata form under Rubin Goldmark , a devotee of Beethoven and Wagner. At age 20 he had saved enough money to go to France and study at the new American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, near Paris. He was lucky enough to be the first American pupil of Nadia Boulanger, whom he found "exhilarating," and stayed with her until 1924. During these years, not only was he exposed to the tremendous cultural riches of Paris but he also traveled to England, Belgium and Italy. In addition he spent the summers, on Boulanger's advice, in Berlin, Vienna and Salzburg. A 1921 performance he gave of his piano composition

Aaron Copland was unknown as a composer when he first came to The MacDowell Colony in 1925.  The artists he met there that summer changed his perception of art in America.  Years later, Copland acknowledged his debt to the Colony, saying that if people found his music distinctly American, the Colony deserved some of the credit. Yet while these charming and circumspect letters do not dwell on intellectual matters and seldom betray any personal or artistic secrets, this is still a book that artists, in particular, should read. It shows very movingly that it is possible to be committed to what one is doing while being generous to others and a citizen of the world; that it is not necessary to be especially neurotic to be a great artist; that strong convictions need not preclude diplomatic civility; that it is possible to produce important work and remain unpretentious. Addressing the latter point directly, Copland instructs the young Henry Brant:
