Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Dr Daniel Peter Hughes Taylor ( c .1848-1904) returned to his native Sierra Leone after studying at Taunton and King's College, London - but contrary to the claim in Coleridge-Taylor's birth certificate, there is no record of his father's marriage to Alice. The young Coleridge-Taylor might never have known his father but he was hardly neglected. Alice Martin, the mother who brought him up in Croydon, married George Evans (1837- c .1908), a railway storeman, with whom he seems to have been on good terms. He received violin lessons from Joseph Beckwith, a local orchestral musician, and he sang from the age of 10 in the choir at St George's Presbyterian Church, Croydon, and the parish church of St Mary Magdalene, Addiscombe. He was very well aware of the difficulties he faced because of the colour of his skin: his nickname at school, for instance, was 'coaley'. But he was a keen student and in 1890 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, originally as a student of the violin, then graduating to studying composition with the composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. At a stroke he had levitated into the most influential musical environment within reach, and acquired patrons who could help make his career.

4 bars in piano-vocal score marked Lento, from his Unmindful of the Roses, the fifth of his six Sorrow Songs to text by Rosetti, published in 1904 (the date of the inscription). On the verso is an autograph musical quotation dated July 1878 in the hand of the German-born American composer Heinrich Gebhard (1878-1963), student of Leschitizky and teacher of Leonard Bernstein. Coleridge-Taylor, perhaps best known for his 1898 cantata Hiawatha's Wedding Feast, was widely acclaimed in both England the the United States. "The cult of the exotic was then at its height, and the romantic appeal of the Amerindian powerful. In Coleridge-Taylor it became entangled with his endeavour to express his African identity, which he did, following Dvorak's example, by modelling some of his works on negro subjects and melodies of the black and Amerindian peoples... Coleridge-Taylor saw it as his mission in life to help establish the dignity of the black man.... In addition to composing, Coleridge-Taylor was an excellent conductor of catholic tastes and, according to Carl Stoeckel, was described in 1910 by New York orchestral players as the 'black Mahler'". [Index] Samuel Taylor-Coleridge: One Hit Wonder By Norman Lebrecht / April 7, 2004 Samuel was abused at school, other urchins setting fire to his tightly curled hair. He sought refuge in music and, showing talent on the violin, was sent by Alice for tuition at the Royal College of Music. In his second term, he composed two anthems that were published by Novellos. Encouraged by the college founder, George Grove, and by his composition professor, Charles Villiers Stanford, the boy poured forth new scores. He wrote three movements of a symphony for the college orchestra, as well as much chamber music for his classmates. Whether out of impecuniousness or exhaustion, it is clear that his consistency fell away steeply after Hiawatha. Where the cantata is impressively structured, its themes nicely developed, the violin concerto is a patchwork of snatched ideas and effects, none of which is allowed to achieve maturity. Written for the American soloist Maud Powell, it betrays hints of Stephen Foster in the opening theme and persistent nudges of US-era Dvorak. The finale alone, Brahmsian in tone but surgent with new-world get-up-and-go, reveals a composer in command of his material and confident in his stride.

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Coleridge-Taylor, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Samuel (1875-1912), a British composer, is best remembered for his choral and orchestral settings of the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha. Coleridge-Taylor wrote three cantatas based on the poem. They reflect the composer's feeling for rich and colorful use of the orchestra. The three works were Hiawatha's Wedding Feast (1898), The Death of Minnehaha (1899), and Hiawatha's Departure (1900). Coleridge-Taylor wrote many other works for various ensembles and several works for the theater. He was the son of a West African doctor and an English mother. He set a goal of helping to establish the dignity of black people, and several of his compositions show his strong feeling for his African heritage. These compositions include the vocal work African Romances (1897), the operatic romance Dream Lovers (1898), the chamber work African Suite (1898), and the Toussaint l'Ouverture overture (1901).

The Piano Quintet here might well be by Brahms and the Clarinet Quintet could as easily be by Dvorák . But when you think about it, could there possibly be any higher compliments one could pay to a late nineteenth century composer, especially to a young composer of mixed race from London?
