From 1910 he played in the Queen's Hall Orchestra under Henry Wood , becoming principal violist in 1912. By the end of the 1910s he was concentrating entirely on composition, having been forced to give up the viola for medical reasons. He had an early success with the overture The Merrymakers (1922), but more popular was the London Suite (1933). The last movement of this, "Knightsbridge", was used by the BBC to introduce their radio programme In Town Tonight . Amongst his early champions was Sir Edward Elgar Coates' autobiography, Suite in Four Movements , was published in 1953. He died in Chichester having suffered a stroke . Eric Coates
Eric Coates was born in Nottinghamshire in 1886. As an instrumentalist, he studied violin, then viola, holding the position of Principal Viola with the Henry Wood Queen`s Hall Orchestra in 1912. He went on to specialise in the field of light music, achieving much of his fame through the medium of radio. He has been described as "an outstanding exponent of agreeable light music". Who could argue with that? Is there anybody, of a certain age, that cannot hum the march from this famous classic film released in 1954 - one of the most memorable film scores for a remarkable film? For anybody who is not familiar with the story, the film recounts, in dramatised documentary form, an accurate account of a real-life action by the RAF in 1943, when three dams in Germany were destroyed by the Barnes Wallis bouncing bomb. Coates' theme appears five times, first over the opening titles and, variously, throughout the film. This is one of the all-time great themes, deeply melodic, uplifting, heroic with a light-hearted central section, yet filled with a noble dignity of almost Elgarian proportions.

The 1940 Calling All Workers is the most well established piece, superbly recorded and conducted – it’s an 'object listen' to hear Coates’ use of the bass line here. As with most composer-conductors he is straight-forward, fleet, unsentimental and supremely accomplished in his own music – and this is repertory that has seen more than its share of magnificent performers; Charles Groves, Stanford Robinson, Reginald Kilbey and Adrian Boult amongst many.

Eric Coates was to become the greatest British composer of light music in the 20th century, though his education never looked to be leading him in that direction. He was born in the midlands of England, in the county of Nottinghamshire, in 1886. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, taking viola with the legendary Lionel Tertis, and composition with Frederick Corder. But it was as a violist that he earned his living, joining the famous Queen's Hall Orchestra under Sir Henry Wood. From 1913 to 1919 he was principal viola, and a list of first British performances by that orchestra would indicate that he came into contact with all the most avant garde music of his day. Yet it was to be in the field of light music that he was to become famous. It was the time of the radio, the BBC Light Programme with its demands for new music, and the need to brighten the country after the First World War, and above all it was the day of the 'bright young thing'. It was the perfect scene for a composer who could produce a seemingly endless stream of easily memorable melodies. A publishing house commissioned him to write a major light music work for orchestra each year, while they were happy to take anything from him including his large output of songs.

Eric Coates Composer Eric Coates was a gentle and quietly spoken man but his music crackled with enthusiasm and vitality. He could write tunes and clothe them in the most attractive musical colours . . . Someone once said that the marches of Sousa would make a man with a wooden leg step out; a man would have to have a wooden heart not to respond to the music of Eric Coates.' Sir Charles Groves B orn in 1886, Eric Coates was the youngest son of five children. His father was a local doctor whose home and surgery were on Tenter Hill, Hucknall. As a child Eric would lay awake at night listening to the Hucknall Old Brass Band practising in the nearby Plough and Harrow Inn , and when he was six he became the proud owner of a violin. His mother was a fine pianist, his father played the flute, and they formed an orchestra that included Eric and his three sisters. By the age of ten, Eric was first violin and within two years was writing in a part for any player who unexpectedly turned up for orchestral rehearsal, no matter what the instrument was - violin, double-bass, cello or woodwind. When not practising his music, young Eric would chase rats around the stable with his father's bulldogs. Always smartly dressed with a scarf around his neck to protect his chest, he was described by everyone as a gentleman.
