with Jan Swafford and Misha Dichter Although Frédéric Chopin was revered by his contemporaries as "the next Mozart" and "one of the glories of the Polish nation," in public he was a shy man who dreaded performing in front of crowds. With his delicate, almost feminine features and fragile health, Chopin tended to withdraw from social situations, preferring the privacy and intimacy of the salon over the elevation of the concert stage. Today, it is astounding to realize that Chopin's reputation as a performer rests on about thirty public concerts given during his lifetime. This edition of Milestones of the Millennium celebrates the music of Polish composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin, who died 150 years ago, on October 17, 1849.

Large open graves were dug disinterring previous occupants, and one night a poor shoemaker fell into one of these and died. The stench around the area was terrible. Then a few years later, in 1786, the walls of some cellars around this graveyard collapsed and the contents of the graves flowed into them killing a number of occupants. It was decided that something had to be done. The Les Halles cemetery was closed and for months carts loaded with the disinterred remains dug from the area slowly made their way to the catacombs in the 14th. All this took place at night so as no to upset the populace. Cossacks camped in it after overthrowing the Parisian students who had tried to hold out on the hill. The Cossacks cut down many of the trees for firewood. Then in 1871 the Communards set up their last artillery batteries and settled down to fight to the death among the graves. They held out against the government troops for a week, but were finally overcome around

Born in a village near Warsaw, Poland, Chopin is known as "the poet of the piano." Composing exclusively for piano, he earned his nickname by expanding the instrument's "musical" and "poetic" capabilities. No one has achieved the piano's capacity to create a poem with sounds. He conquered the piano's harmony like no other, sending the piano and the player to a serene majestic world of music. Most successful in Paris, where he performed most of those Mazurkas and Polonaises, he was invited by the greatest composers, painters, and writers of the day. There, he settled for a career in writing and teaching, seldom performing in public. While living under the atmosphere of the places he loved the most, he also had a famous love affair with a French woman, a novelist, whose penname was George Sand. Chopin's was one of the first composers to incorporate the recently refined sustaining pedal of the piano. In his dreamy nocturnes, for example, the left hand introduces the smooth melody, making the pushing of the pedal almost mandatory to achieve the ethereal music which he creates. Along with Schubert , they are the grand masters of piano impromptus, short pieces that give the sense of improvisation. Chopin's most famous, the

Frédéric Chopin was one of the most eminent composers of piano music, a man whose genius enlarged the technical range and the musical expression of the instrument through a remarkable body of work. Chopin was born on Mar. 1, 1810, in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw, Poland. His father was French, and his mother Polish. He was a precocious child, and he demonstrated a talent for the piano at a very early age. Although he was given piano lessons from the age of six, he seems to have been largely self-taught, a fact that may account for the inventiveness his compositions display: he had little notion of what was "not allowed."
Chopin began composing while still a child, and a number of his early works survive. He gave his first public concert in 1818. He studied music theory with Jozef Elsner, director of the Warsaw Conservatory, and, after brilliant debuts in Warsaw and Vienna in 1830, he left Warsaw permanentlythe Polish insurrection initially prevented his returnand by 1831 had settled in Paris.
Chopin was welcomed onto the French cultural scene. Robert Schumann had already acclaimed his variations on "La ci darem" (from

    Composer
Born near Warsaw, Poland, Chopin was the son of a French emigre and a Polish mother, He won early fame in the relatively limited circles of his native country before seeking his fortune abroad, in Paris. His departure from Warsaw coincided with the unsuccessful national rising against Russian domination and Chopin found himself in Paris in the company of a number of other Polish exiles. He was able to establish himself as a pianist and as a teacher of the piano, primarily in fashionable society. For about ten years, Chopin enjoyed a liaison with the writer George Sand, but broke with her during the last years of his life, brought to a close by the tuberculosis from which he had long suffered. Except for some Polish songs and a few works for cello and piano trio, Chopin devoted his life to the creation of a richly melodic and harmonically original literature for the piano. His compositions made a remarkable use of the newly developed instrument, exploring its poetic possibilities while generally avoiding the more obvious ostentation of the Paris school of performers. In other words, Chopin let loose! Chopin's music is still loved today and studied by both composition and keyboard students.
