Frederic Chopin was one of the greatest piano composers in history. Fortunately for guitarists many of his pieces have been transcribed. Chopin did not confine himself to one key. Notice the amount of accidentals in this 80-second prelude. This piece was originally written in C minor (3 flats). It is transposed here to A minor. The low E string has been dropped to D. Only necessary liberties were taken to accomodate the range and tuning of the guitar. As with much of the classical repertoire, many of the chord tones don't fall on adjacent strings. This is necessary to maintain harmonic integrity when possible. Guitarists will benefit from the musical opportunities that this technique provides. Try rolling the chords with the right hand thumb and fingers. This creates a more guitaristic effect while adding variety and character to the piece. Let the notes overlap, sustaining them whenever posiible. Give the piece lots of room to breathe: 40 beats per minute or slightly less.

THE FREDERIC CHOPIN INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION is one of the oldest and most prestigious music competitions in the world. It is also among the group of few monographic piano competitions dedicated to the musical performance of one composer.
The first CHOPIN COMPETITION took place in 1927 at the Warsaw Philharmonic . Jerzy Zurawlew, an outstanding Polish pianist, padegogue and composer was the competition's initiator.
Subsequent competitions were held, at five-year intervals, in 1932 and 1937. The fourth post-war edition of the competition was organized in 1949 and the fifth in 1955. From that year the FREDERIC CHOPIN COMPETITIONS are held at regular five-year intervals. The organizer of the first three events was the Higher School of Music of the Warsaw Music Society. After the war, the competitions were conducted with the co-partipation of state authorities, i.e. the Ministry of Culture, which commissioned and coordinated preparatory activities. Since 1960, the main organizer of the competition is the Frederic Chopin Society in Warsaw. The CHOPIN COMPETITION belongs to the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva since 1957.

Introduction (born Zelazowa Wola, ?1 March 1810; died Paris, 17 October 1849). Liszt Schumann and introductions into the highest society, he quickly established himself as a private teacher and salon performer, his legendary artist's image being enhanced by frail health (he had tuberculosis), attractive looks, sensitive playing, a courteous manner and the piquancy attaching to self-exile. Of his several romantic affairs, the most talked about was that with the novelist George Sand (Aurore Dudevant) though whether he was truly drawn to women must remain in doubt. Between 1838 and 1847 their relationship, with a strong element of the maternal on her side, coincided with one of his most productive creative periods. He gave few public concerts, though his playing was much praised, and he published much of his best music simultaneously in Paris, London and Leipzig. The breach with Sand was followed by a rapid deterioration in his health and a long visit to Britain (1848). His funeral at the Madeleine was attended by nearly 3000 people. Chopin is admired above all for his great originality in exploiting the piano. While his own playing style was famous for its subtlety and restraint, its exquisite delicacy in contrast with the spectacular feats of pianism then reigning in Paris, most of his works have a simple texture of accompanied melody. From this he derived endless variety, using wide-compass broken chords, the sustaining pedal and a combination of highly expressive melodies, some in inner voices. Similarly, though most of his works are basically ternary in form, they show great resource in the way the return is varied, delayed, foreshortened or extended, often with a brilliant coda added.

Frédéric François chopin After chopin gave two successful concerts in Vienna when he was 19, he began writing works designed for his original piano
    http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/4279/
A Short Biography Zelazowa Wola (Poland), 3/01/1810 - Paris (France), 10/17/1849. Perhaps the greatest of all composers for the piano was Chopin. Called a "musical genius" when he was a teenager, Chopin composed a remarkable variety of brilliant pieces warlike polonaises, elegant waltzes, romantic nocturnes, and poetic ballades and etudes. His father, Nicholas, was a Frenchman who had lived in Poland for many years. His Polish mother was of noble birth. Even as a small child, Chopin loved piano music. He began to take piano lessons when he was 6 years old. He started to compose music even before he knew how to write down his ideas. At the age of 8 he performed in a public charity concert. Chopin's first published musical work, a rondo, appeared when he was 15 years old. When Chopin graduated from the lyceum, at 17, he was recognized as the leading pianist of Warsaw and a talented composer. After Chopin gave two successful concerts in Vienna when he was 19, he began writing works designed for his original piano style. At the same time as his return to Vienna in 1830, Poland revolted against its Russian rulers. The uprising failed, and as a result the Russian czar put Warsaw under harsh military rule. Chopin decided to go to Paris, which was the center of the romantic movement in the arts. Except for occasional trips, Chopin spent the rest of his life in Paris. He gave lessons and concerts, and publishers paid well for his compositions. The French loved him for his genius and his charm. Poets, musicians, wealthy Parisians, and Polish exiles were his friends. An important influence was a romantic friendship with Baroness Dudevant, better known as the novelist George Sand.

    In his own words...

"One needs only to study a certain positioning of the hand in relation to the keys to obtain with ease the most beautiful sounds, to know how to play long notes and short notes and to [attain] certain unlimited dexterity... A well formed technique, it seems to me, [is one] that can control and vary a beautiful sound quality." Polish composer of music for the piano. Chopin's music helped to expand the technical and expressive range of the piano.
The wonder of Chopin's music is the way he conjured new sounds from the piano. His pieces explore the full expressive range of the instrument, and he had the ability to create (sometimes in just a few lines of music) a kind of musical poetry. The freedom with which he played is reflected in his extensive use of tempo rubato. He also extended the harmonic language of the Romantic style; not by bold leaps to new chords and tonalities, but by subtle side trips that take his pieces to those new tonal areas. Finally, Chopin is remembered as one of the first nationalist composers, using the themes and dances of his native Poland as the sources for his pieces (especially the polonaises and mazurkas). In every way, Chopin was the quintessential "Romantic" composer, and Robert Schumann 's initial reaction to his music ("Hats off, gentlemen, a genius") was borne out in his short but spectacular career.

, composer for the piano, b. near Warsaw, of French and Polish parentage. His lyrical, often melancholy, compositions brought romantic piano music to unprecedented expressive heights. A prodigy as a pianist and composer, he began performing at aristocratic salons in Warsaw, and in 1826 he started full-time studies at the Warsaw Conservatory. After concert appearances in Vienna and Munich, he settled in Paris, where he gave his first concert in 1831. Although he remained devoted to Polish culture and artists, he never returned to his homeland. In Paris he became closely associated with the principal composers, artists, and literary figures of his time. He was a virtuoso interpreter of his own works, but his dislike of playing in public made him prefer teaching and composing to the concert stage.

One of the best-known and best-loved composers of the Romantic period, Chopin was born in Poland and lived most of his life in Paris, which was at that time the musical hub of Europe. Chopin's entire musical output was devoted to his favorite instrument, the piano. His over 200 solo compositions for the piano all demonstrate his highly individual melodic style, and include two sets of etudes (studies) , two sonatas , four ballads, many pieces he variously titled preludes, impromptus, or scherzos, and a great number of dances. Included among the latter are a number of waltzes, but also a great many mazurkas and six polonaises, both of which are dances from his native Poland. Some of these dance pieces are among Chopin's best-known works, including the proud Polonaise in A-flat major and the haunting Waltz in C-sharp minor Among Chopin's most individual works are the . Intended to serve as improvisatory beginnings to an intimate recital, these pieces range from tender melancholy to the dramatic utterances of the stormy
