  • Chopin's unique style and genre's (Etude, Mazurka, Nocturne, and Waltz) were clearly established before he left Warsaw.
  • Chopin preferred to give private, more intimate concerts to smaller crowds of high class "socialites".
  • Chopin was able to charge lofty fees for private piano lessons. His tutorship was highly demanded.
Chopin's Family Background: Chopin's father, Mikolaj, tutored the son of Countess Justyna Skarbek at the Countess's estate in Zelazowa Wola. Chopin's mother, Tekla Justyna Kryzanowska, had also been employed there, but at a much younger age. She was the Countess's companion and housekeeper. In 1806, Chopin's parents married. Frederic Chopin was only seven months old when they moved out of the estate to Warsaw. Mikolaj secured a post at the Lyceum and lived in the right wing of the Saxon Palace. Chopin had three siblings. Childhood: Given the current living circumstances, Chopin met and associated with three different classes of people: professors of academia, middle gentry (most of the students attending Lyceum), and the wealthy aristocrats. In 1817, the Lyceum, along with the Chopins, moved to the Kazimierzowski Palace next to the University of Warsaw. Chopin quickly gained several lasting friendships with the boys attending the school long before he enrolled in the university. He was home-schooled until 4th grade.

Frederic Francois Chopin
Polish composer and pianist. He combined a gift for melody, an adventurous harmonic sense, an intuitive and inventive understanding of formal design and a brilliant piano technique in composing a major corpus of piano music. One of the leading 19th-century composers who began a career as a pianist, he abandoned concert life early; but his music represents the quintessence of the Romantic piano tradition and embodies more fully than any other composer's the expressive and technical characteristics of the instrument.

Fr©d©ric Chopin Polish Fryderyk (Franciszek) Chopin , sometimes Szopen French Fr©d©ric (Fran§ois) Chopin English family name pronunciation IPA /ʃoʊˈp¦n/ March 1 October 17 ) was a Polish virtuoso pianist and piano composer of the Romantic period. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers for the piano. Chopin was born in the village of Å»elazowa Wola Duchy of Warsaw , to a Polish mother and French expatriate father. Hailed in his homeland as a child prodigy , at the age of twenty Chopin left Poland forever. In Paris , he made a career as performer, teacher and composer, and he adopted the French version of his given names, Fr©d©ric-Fran§ois . From 1837 to 1847 he had a turbulent relationship with the French writer George Sand (Aurore Dudevant). Always in frail health, at 39 in Paris he succumbed to pulmonary tuberculosis All of Chopin's extant work includes the piano in some role (predominantly as a solo instrument), and his compositions are widely considered to be pinnacles of the piano's repertoire. Although his music is technically demanding, Chopin's style emphasizes nuance and expressive depth rather than technical virtuosity.

Frederic Chopin (1810 - 1849) Frederic Chopin was born in Poland of a Polish mother, and his country of origin clearly influenced Chopin to the extent that he wrote many Mazurkas and Polonaises based on Polish dances. The other country he is associated with is France, his father being French and Chopin moving to Paris and spending much of his creative life there. Although often contrasted with the extrovert virtuoso Liszt , the reserved Chopin nevertheless had a creatively important social life in Paris with a number of lady friends. His longest lasting relationship was with the female novelist known as George Sand who dressed as a man. This relationship was important to Chopin, with Sand perhaps acting as a mother figure, and they were together for about 10 years. Chopin was not particularly healthy and developed tuberculosis, which he endured for several years before his death at the age of 39. Chopin's music: Chopin was a skilled pianist, and a large proportion of his works are for solo piano. Many of these works are fairly short in duration, such as the Preludes, Etudes, Waltzes, Impromptus, Nocturnes and Scherzos, as well as the previously mentioned Polish dance forms of the Mazurka and Polonaise. Chopin also developed a form called the Ballade which is a more extended work, fairly free in style like a stream of consciousness, but with an internal logic. He also wrote a number of multi-movement works including of course several Piano Sonatas. He was quite capable of writing for other instruments and did so at times, his two Piano Concertos (for solo Piano and Orchestra) being obvious examples.

THE FREDERIC CHOPIN SOCIETY Established in 1984, the Frederic Chopin Society is dedicated to bringing the power and beauty of classical piano to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Chopin Society presents an annual series of five concerts open to the general public. Although our name honors Frederic Chopin, the universally regarded "poet of the piano," the Society's programs include the works of many composers and more than three centuries of repertoire.
Events are held at the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center in St. Paul in a concert hall that fosters an intimate connection between artist and audience. We look for highly individual and engaging artists, those who go beyond mere technical mastery to say something compelling with their art, whether they be the cream of emerging talents or well-established figures in the music world.
We have a spectacular 25th season planned and look forward to celebrating it with you!

Frédéric Chopin, the greatest of the Polish composers, was born in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw on February 22, 1810 of a French father, and a Polish mother. He spent the first 20 years of his life in Warsaw, where he was able to hear many of the premier artists of the time perform. Chopin first studied piano at the Warsaw Conservatory, and became very proficient on the instrument by the time he reached his early teens. He played his first concert at the age of 7, and was a published composer by the time he turned 15. By the late 1820s, Chopin had won a great reputation as a piano virtuoso and composer. He toured throughout Europe to the acclaim of audiences and critics, alike. In 1831, after performing in Paris, he fell so deeply in love with the city that he made it his home, and never again returned to Warsaw. He soon became a favorite of the Parisian salons, and the society elite, and throughout the years that he lived in Paris, was always in great demand as both a pianist and a teacher. In the late 1830s, Chopin met the novelist, Mme. Aurore Dudévant, who used the pen name
