Monophonic sound resources for the oboe: Part Il -
Pitch and other techniques
Nora Post
(The following reprint is the second of two parts, both of which originally appeared together as Volume 11, No. 3(1982) of Interface -journal of New Music Research,
INTRODUCTION I see this paper as the second of two companion articles for my earlier IDRS paper concerning multiphonics for the oboe (Journal of the International Double Reed Society 10 . These two companion articles present the main categories of monophonic sounds today as they pertain to the oboe repertoire. For convenience' sake, I have organized these techniques into three broad classifications: timbre, pitch, and other techniques. This paper deals with the categories of pitch and other techniques. Taken together, these three articles serve to present instrumental concepts, techniques, and notational procedures which, in my mind, form an essential part of any oboist's or composer's knowledge today. Yet my experience suggests that a thorough grasp of these possibilities - on the part of both oboist and composer - is far less commonplace than one might hope. We are at a point in time, I believe, when a paper like this becomes a summing up, for most of the techniques and notational procedures described here are already well established in the repertoire. The aural potential beckoning before us like the Yellow Brick Road to Oz combined with the sobering fact that the twenty-first century is nearly upon us surely provide compelling reasons to secure an adequate command of twentieth-century techniques; without such an understanding, it would be difficult successfully to explore new terrain. But where does one begin? Lewis Carroll provided some excellent advice on this subject, which I plan to follow exactly: "Begin at the beginning, " the king said, gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop."

Enigineer Of The Right Formulas in the Baby Milk Factory "The motto around here is 'Anything, Any Place, Any Time, For No Reason At All," laughs Spencer Chrislu, Zappa's in-house engineer. "Whatever keeps things fun and loose and interesting, and it can change instantly. I love the variety. Frank is outrageously creative. All day long, 24 hours a day, thoughts flow in and out of his mind, and it's my job to try and flesh them out. He'll go up and take a nap and come back down to tell me of one of the things that came to him in a dream. That's how he came up with the Hoop- it came to him while he was asleep."
Though sometimes Frank is at his side from the first fader move, he generally leaves him alone on initial mixes. "Frank and I both listen to things very much the same way," Spence states. "Neither of us likes drums coming off the top of a mountain. We like a drum to sound like a drum, a band to sound like a band. I go to the symphony just to keep my memory refreshed on what live acoustical music, in a real air space, sounds like, so that when I get back in the studio, I can try to recreate that. I love imaging in a sound field. I love placing images in specific areas, areas not only left to right but also back to front. This new six-channel material in and of itself is an imaging system you can only dream of."

REPERTOIRE - WORLD PREMIERES 2003 – 2005 Paper presented by Tim Reynish to WASBE 15th July 2005 I used as my introductory music a work by Chen Yi, recorded by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in the Esplanade Hall DUNHUANG FANTASY (1999) (12 minutes). 1121 1110 P, Organ, available from Theodore Presser. It was perhaps a pity that a composer whose aim is identical with the theme of Conference, East meets West, should have been represented only by her little work for middle school, Spring Festival . We might have heard the Dunhuang Fantasy or any one of several other works by one of China’s leading composers: Two sets of wind and percussion instruments for Picc, Bcl, and brass 6441 T 6perc TU (2002) (13 minutes) version for symphonic wind ensemble (2004) 1111 1110 P, Cello Many members will remember the vision of 1981 and the first Conference, bringing together composers, conductors and publishers; the important focus of our work was the interaction of the professionals involved in wind music, through concerts, discussions, through the library which represented every country. My own personal ideal of WASBE was always that we meet to play and discuss the greatest works at all levels of difficulty, whether for school, amateur, military, university, conservatoire or professional ensembles. This discussion should take place in conference and be continued in our publications, and we should feed back to the national and regional conferences and associations something of what we have experienced, a continuous process of sharing information about our developing repertoire. WASBE’s primary job is to disseminate information carrying out our objective.
