composer Dan Olson: Chen Yi, thank you so much for coming by. It's a great pleasure to have you in our studio. Chen Yi: Thank you, Dan, for inviting me. DO: You have many homes in the United States. Where are all your homes in the United States? CY: I teach at UMKC Conservatory. That is the University of Missouri in Kansas City. A conservatory. So I have a home in Kansas City. But another one is in New York. My husband, who is also a composer, we live together for most of the summer time in New York. DO: You've been writing music for how long? CY: Since 17 years old. DO: Wow. CY: And I started violin and piano when I was three, four years old. And I have come through China's cultural revolution during the late '60s and I was sent to the countryside to work as a farmer for two years. And I had brought my violin along with me and also I could practice my fingers playing revolutionary songs. ... Paganini's Cappriccios ... or the Candenzas. And then I was brought back to Canton, my home town in Guangdong. I worked as a concert master .... DO: Hmm. That's a wonderful biography, thank you for going through that. By the way, may I say, your English is wonderful. Thank you so much for speaking the English language. It's just ... it's wonderful to hear your words. What a great background.

carrying hundred-pound loads of rocks and mud for irrigation walls, I would play both simple songs to farmers along with excerpts from the standard western classical repertory. It was during that period that I started thinking about the value of individual lives and the importance of education in society. As an artist living in the United States, I feel strongly that I can improve the understanding between people by sharing my music."
Trained as a violinist in the European classical tradition, Chen Yi initially came into contact with Chinese folk music in a forced relocation to the countryside during the Cultural Revolution. Already widely celebrated in China as a major new composer during the increasingly open cultural climate of the 1980s, Chen Yi came to the United States in 1986 to continue her musical studies. She writes both intimate and large scale works for European and Chinese instruments, and fuses Western orchestral and choral idioms with traditional Eastern pentatonic tonalities. A recent multimedia work, Chinese Myths Cantata, yokes a symphony orchestra, an ensemble of traditional Chinese instrumentalists and a choir of male singers, a Chinese dance troupe with visual image projections on stage.

AN INTERVIEW WITH CHEN YI
Is there a noticeable difference in the number of women composers in China before and after 1949? In other words, does it appear that the dramatic and fundamental change in the government of China in 1949 made a difference in the opportunities for Chinese women to become composers? Yes, without a doubt, the political change created more opportunities for women. For one thing, the number of composition students has increased. Also, in the work place, as in other areas of life in China, both women and men are equal. These changes have made it more possible for women to become composers. How, if at all, did this political reality affect your decision to prepare yourself for a career in composition at the Central Conservatory and when did you make that decision? The door of opportunity opened for those of my generation when the system of higher education in China resumed after the Cultural Revolution (1966-1977) ended. In 1978, I was in the first group of composition students to be admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Actually, I was also admitted as a violin major, though I was only allowed to elect one major. I chose composition because it had been my dream. And since making that decision, I have taken composition seriously as my profession, though I must admit that it is still a mysterious realm for me to explore. Regarding that first group, I understand from an article published in the New York Times earlier this year that, when the Central Conservatory reopened its doors in 1977, "after the 10 barren years of the Cultural Revolution," it received applications from 18,000 musicians across China seeking to pursue professional music studies, and that, of those, only 200 were eventually accepted as the first group of conservatory students. How soon did your promise as a composer begin to show after being admitted to the Central Conservatory?

Chen Yi was born in 1901 in Lochi near Chengdu, Sichuan , into a moderately wealthy magistrate's family. Chen Yi was left behind at the beginning of the Long March to direct military operations in the old Communist zone. Chen had been wounded six weeks earlier with a bullet in the hip that had not healed. He was a short stocky but a cultured man, outspoken, and outgoing. He an excellent poet, second only to Mao and was known for his sense of humor. He had few troops, 25,000 to 30,000 with about 10,000 of those wounded and of those, not more than 6,000 to 7,000 had ever held a rifle in their hands. The Nationalist forces constantly harassed them so that by December 1934, losses were so great that they were forced into guerrilla warfare. By then their numbers were down to 2,000 troops and 2000 wounded. On February 14, 1935, Chen called upon the peasants in the area to take the wounded soldiers into their homes as sons. "They will make good sons, marry your daughters and will be hard workers," said Chen Within a half day every wounded soldier had been placed with a peasant family, dispersed invisibly into the countryside. Each was supplied with several silver dollars, medicine for treating their wounds, and 5 pounds of salt (a priceless gift).

  • Chanticleer, the only full-time, professional, classical vocal ensemble in the United States, has built its reputation on stellar interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to vocal jazz, and from gospel to new music. It was founded in 1978 by Louis Botto and is currently directed by Joseph Jennings. Prior to this project, Chanticleer had produced successful collaborations with George Coates Performance Works, Eiko and Koma, Dimensions Dance Company, the San Francisco Symphony, and others. Among the many composers it had commissioned were Anthony Davis, Bernard Rands, and Peter Schickele.

Chen Yi: Off the Hook BY GARY LINDSEY 1965 rolls around and the Cultural Revolution changes their lives forever. Schools are shut down for ten years. Families are broken apart as people are sent to work hard labor in the far reaches of the country. The vision is striking. Chen Yi, a gifted child, now a young woman who had known only grace and good care, was forced to work hard labor. She planted and harvested rice and carried one-hundred-pound bags of mud and rocks up mountainsides. Physically and emotionally it would prove to be the most painful time of her life. “People hear his beautiful music,” her father used to tell her, “feel the sunlight and see the composer’s happy face, but they don’t see the tears behind his cheeks." In the midst of the hardship, something within Chen Yi was awakened by her exposure to the land and those who worked it. Her fascination with the music of country folk grew. She became connected to the earth and the people who worked the fields. These feelings and themes were filed away and emerge in every composition.

They broke up into smaller groups. The KMT put out a reward of 50,000 yuan for the capture of Chen and his political commissar Xiang Ying. Chen and Xiang slipped through KMT lines in disguise. A few days later remnants of their forces joined them. They were down to groups of 80 men. There had been fearsome losses.
