ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Gustave Charpentier
The big city and independence worked against the young man. He adopted a bohemian lifestyle and challenged authority at every turn. His attitude and rebellion caused a riff between he and his violin teacher. Consequently, Charpentier was forced to leave the Conservatoire. In 1885, he returned, apparently rededicated, and began composition lessons with
Jules Massenet . After two years with a master like Massenet, Charpentier applied and won the Prix de Rome in 1887. Says Irvine, "Saturday, 25 June [1887] was the date for deciding the Prix de Rome competition. First prize went to Gustave Charpentier, a pupil of Massenet, The cantata was Didon with text by Lucien Augé." (Demar Irvine, Massenet: A Chronicle of His Life and Times (Portland:1994) p. 154)
During his obligatory tenure in Rome, many ideas germinated that he would later harvest for use in his operas, most notably Louise , his most famous. After many revisions

His father was a baker. At the age of fifteen he began work in a spinning mill, where he taught violin to his employer - who was so impressed with Charpentier's talent that he sponsored his entry into the Lille Conservatory. In 1881 he went to the Paris Conservatory, studying with Massenet from 1885 and winning the Prix de Rome in 1887. In 1902 he founded the Conservatoire Populaire Mimi Pinson, to give working girls greater opportunities to enjoy and perform music. He was a pupil of Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatoire, and was also strongly influenced by Richard Wagner . In 1887 he won the coveted Prix de Rome, which enabled him to spend three years in Rome, where he completed two large orchestral works. However, his fame rests on his opera Louise (1900), which he had begun in Rome. In 1902 he used the proceeds from the great success of the opera to set up the Conservatoire Populaire, where working women could learn music and dancing for free. Charpentier wrote a second opera, Julien (1913), as well as orchestral and vocal works; none of these, however, rivalled the popularity of
