Jump to: navigation search Gustave Charpentier June 25 February 18 ) was a French composer , best known for his opera Louise He was born in Dieuze , the son of a baker, and after studying at the conservatoire in Lille entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1881. There he studied compositions under Jules Massenet and in 1887 won the Prix de Rome for his cantata Didon . During the time in Rome that the prize gave him, he wrote the orchestral Impressions d'Italie and began work on the libretto and music for what would become his best known work, the opera Louise Charpentier returned to Paris, and continued to compose, including songs on texts by Charles Baudelaire and Voltaire . He eventually completed Louise , and it was accepted for production by the Op©ra-Comique . A realistic portrait of Parisian working-class life, it is sometimes considered a French example of verismo opera. The premiere of Louise on February 2, 1900 under the baton of Andr© Messager made it the first new opera to be produced at the Op©ra-Comique in the twentieth century. It was an immediate success, soon being performed all over the world and bringing Charpentier wide acclaim. It also launched the career of the Scottish soprano Mary Garden , who took over the title role during an early performance. A film version of the work was made in 1939 with

CHARPENTIER, GUSTAVE BIOGRAPHY
After Bohemian distractions in Paris, Gustave Charpentier eventually became a composition pupil of Massenet at the Conservatoire, winning the important Prix de Rome two years later. His chief activity as a composer took place before 1914 and he is remembered principally for his opera Louise. Operas Charpentier wrote four operas, the first of them, the roman musical (musical novel) Louise, with its seamstress heroine and her Bohemian lover Julien, rejected by her family. One aria from the opera, Depuis le jour, has remained a frequent recital item.

Gustave Charpentier, Sohn eines B¤ckers, floh mit seiner Familie 1870 aus seinem lothringischen Heimatort vor den anr¼ckenden Deutschen nach Tourcoing . Musikalisch fr¼h gef¶rdert, wurde ihm der Besuch des Konservatoriums in Lille und 1881 auch der des Pariser Konservatoriums erm¶glicht. Seine autorit¤tsfeindliche Haltung f¼hrte zum Zerw¼rfnis mit seinem Violinlehrer Lambert Joseph Massart , er musste das Konservatorium verlassen. Sp¤ter vervollst¤ndigte er seine Studien bei ‰mile Louis Fortun© Harmonielehre ) und Jules Massenet (Komposition). 1887 erhielt er den Rompreis und begann in der Villa Medici seine bedeutendsten Werke, vor allem die Oper Louise , die ihm 1900 nach entbehrungsreichen Jahren einen sensationellen Erfolg bescherte. Die sozialkritische "musikalische Roman" ¼ber die arme N¤herin Louise in der GroŸstadt Paris war ein atmosph¤rischer, spezifisch franz¶sischer Beitrag zum anbrechenden Verismus .     The Nation's Capital Celebrates Haydn And Mozart And Johann Hoven, Berg, Eisler, Schindler-Mahler, Zemlinsky, Weill, Szymanowski, And Webern
    Austrian mezzo-soprano Elisabeth von Magnus and Dutch pianist Jacob Bogaart, under the patronage of the National Gallery of Art and the Embassy of Austria, have been giving a free, three-program overview of the Austrian and German Lied tradition, which has already featured performances of warm and exquisite songs by Haydn, Mozart, Johann Hoven, Berg, Eisler, Schindler-Mahler, and Zemlinsky.
    The mini-residency concludes this evening, Friday, at the Austrian Embassy with an evening of German, French, and American songs by Kurt Weill.
    Program information to the performance of songs by Berg, Eisler, Schindler-Mahler, and Zemlinsky, at the National Gallery of Art, this past Wednesday part of the superb music program accompanying the exhibition Foto: Modernity in Central Europe, 1918–1945

    Photo - Gustave Charpentier Dur travail, que Forum Opera me demande de réaliser dans le dossier Naturalisme. Gustave Charpentier, compositeur tant décrié, critiqué, abhorré, adulé n' est connu principalement que pour son opéra Louise , créé en 1900, œuvre presque aussitôt épinglée de l'étiquette Naturaliste. Qu'en est-il vraiment ? Cet ouvrage est resté à l' affiche jusqu'à nos jours ; même si certains vantent les mérites éminemment plus louables des compositions de Bruneau, Lazzari… restées un " rêve frappé de lèpre " à nos oreilles devant l'impressionnant " ouragan " discographique de Louise Charpentier est né à Dieuze le 25 juin 1860 d'une famille lorraine fort modeste. Son père, boulanger, était musicien amateur et donna les premiers cours au jeune Gustave. Puis ce fut la guère et toute la famille s'installa à Tourcoing où l'enfant put parfaire dans sa ville puis à Lille son éducation musicale dans les classes de violon et d' harmonie. La ville de Tourcoing vota une pension pour que le jeune musicien puisse faire ses études au Conservatoire de Paris. Il gravit lentement les marches de la réussite avec des prix d'écriture (1885-1886.)
    Il se présenta au prix de Rome en mai 1887 et il fut reçu premier grand prix avec la cantate Didon (sur les Prix de Rome.) A la Villa Médicis entre 1888 et 1890 il composa une bonne partie de son œuvre
