Villa Provençale March 20, 1925 Dear Madam, Your kind letter found me in my retirement house where I am spending
most of my time this year. Unfortunately, I do not go that often to Paris
anymore. This year I intended to return earlier [to Paris], but I was sick
this winter. I am afraid that I will not be able to leave the countryside until
the end of May. Thank you for your kind remarks concerning my compositions.
I appreciate your humble and sincere comments. It would be a great pleasure
to come visit you, but it will depend on my health. You had questions about some of my titles and interpretations. I will be very
happy to provide them to you. I hope my editor sent you my works which will
be useful to you as a teacher. It is true that since the war ended, I worked on my compositions a lot. So my dear, I am taking note of your project and would like to be part of it, but it will all depend on my health, and also on other events going on.

Celebrating

of music by women Cecile Chaminade
Chaminade wrote prolifically, and nearly all her approximately 400 compositions were published in her life time. Although she wrote orchestral pieces (including the successful piano Conzertstucke, and flute Concertino, a symphony and a ballet), her most popular works were her piano pieces, most of them character pieces, and more than 125 melodies . The music is tuneful and highly accessible, with clear textures and mildly chromatic harmonies, with a typically french wit and colour. She made extensive concert tours as a pianist, performing regularly in England, including as a welcome guest of Queen Victoria. Many Chaminade Clubs were formed in the USA around 1900, and in 1908 she made a tour of twelve American cities. The later 20th century disparagement of late-Romantic French music meant that interest in her music died after her death.

    Cecile Chaminade: Piano Music
American Music Teacher Oct-Nov, 2002 by Jennifer Hayghe by Cecile Chaminade. Dover Publications (31 E. 2nd St., Mineola, NY 11501), 2001. 59pp., $7.95. Advanced. Cecile Chaminade (1857-1944) was a renowned French pianist and prolific composer, known especially for her 200-plus short piano pieces. Although most of these "salon" pieces have disappeared from the repertoire, this Dover collection compiles eight wonderful works, reprinted from earlier editions. The only thing lacking in this collection is programmatic information about the works themselves. The compilation is clearly printed, containing original fingerings and pedal indications, but the scholar or serious student might wish for elaboration of the titles or explanation of Chaminade's musical intentions in determining an appropriate interpretation of the works.
