Fue bautizado en Arezzo el 5 de agosto de 1623 con el nombre de Pietro. En 1637 ingres³ en la orden franciscana, cambiando su nombre por el de Marc’Antonio. Su formaci³n musical procede de su educaci³n religiosa, con Antonio-Maria Abbatini en Roma y Citt  di Castello (1637-1640) y con Giacomo Carissimi en Roma (1640-1645). De su carrera musical se conocen los siguientes hitos: desde 1645 hasta 1649 fue maestro de capilla de la catedral en Volterra, desde 1652 hasta 1657 maestro de capilla en Innsbruck con el archiduque Fernando, desde 1659 hasta 1662 cantor de la capilla pontificia. A partir de 1666, trabaj³ como segundo maestro de capilla de la corte imperial de Viena, donde se estren³ en 1667 su ³pera festiva Il pomo d’oro (1667) con motivo de las bodas de Leopoldo I . Tras su retorno a Italia en 1668, ocup³ el puesto de maestro de capilla en Florencia. Muri³ en esta ciudad el 14 de octubre de 1669.
