Pier Fransesco Cavalli was unquestionably the most profilic Italian opera composer of the seventeenth century, Francesco Cavalli wrote more than thirty operas. Indeed, his contemporaries so admired this achievement that they attributed to him several operas by other composers. Together with his principal librettists, G. Faustini, G. Busenello, and N. Minato, Cavalli vitalized the musical theatre through a sympathetic regard for the dramatic scene of the word and by a flair for creating compelling scenic action. act 2, scene 9, underworld, amor, semele, fedra, didone, hero

SOMETHING OTHER THAN POLITICS ... Hits Washington
by jfl Sunday, June 18, 2006 La Didone secco recitativo fill for the year, La Didone Ignoti Dei Opera La Didone provides to its patient listeners in a different, perhaps more intense way. Baroque fanatics and musicologists alike must have been spellbound at the production, though: how long has it been since we saw and heard a little orchestra replete with cornettos, lirone, two (!) theorbos, viola da gamba, and the like?
The story is the popular myth of Aeneas (Enea), son of Venus and Anchises, the fall of Troy, his flight, the consequent stopover in Carthage, and the eventual founding of Rome. (Berlioz treats the exact same story in Les Troyens La Didone

Francesco Cavalli [Caletti]
Italian composer and singer. He was the son of Giovanni Battista Caletti, organist and maestro di capella at the cathedral at Crema. As a boy Francesco apparently excelled as a singer in the local choir; Venetian nobleman and governor Federico Cavalli noticed the boy and in 1616 persuaded the elder Caletti to let Francesco accompany him to Venice, where he would see to his musical studies. Young Caletti was immediately taken into the choir of St. Mark's (Monteverdi was maestro), where he remained for a decade. From 1620 he was also one of the organists at SS. Giovanni e Paolo. His first known composition appeared in 1625 in a collection of solo motets, Ghirlanda sacra. In 1630 his marriage to Maria Sozomeno, member of a wealthy family, provided him with a measure of personal economic stability that enabled him to spend the rest of his life involved in financially insecure operatic ventures. In 1639, when the post of second organist at St. Mark's became vacant, Cavalli was the unanimous choice for the position. That same year his first opera, Le nozze di Teti e di Peleo (libretto by Orazio Persiani), was performed in Venice. It was followed by a number of successes throughout the 1740s:
