His real name was Pier Francesco Caletti-Bruni, but he is better known by that of Cavalli, the name of his patron, a Venetian nobleman. He became a singer at St. Mark's in Venice in 1617, second organist in 1639, first organist in 1665, and in 1668 maestro di cappella . He is, however, chiefly important for his operas. He began to write for the stage in 1639 ( Le Nozze di Teti e di Peleo ), and soon established so great a reputation that he was summoned to Paris in 1660 to produce an opera ( Serse ) at the Louvre in honor of the marriage of Louis XIV . [This opera premiered one year before Busenello and Monteverdi's more famous "L'Incoronazione di Poppea".] This will be a rare opportunity for American audiences to experience this neglected operatic masterpiece that tells the story of the fall of Troy and the love of Dido and Aeneas. For its Washington premi¨re, Ignoti Dei Opera brings together a cast and orchestra of America's finest early musicians. The cast is led by eminent soprano Rosa Lamoreaux and Tragicomedia veteran tenor Aaron Sheehan. The orchestra will be led by America's foremost Baroque violinist Robert Mealy, and will include an expanded continuo section of organ, harpsichord, theorbos, guitars, gambas, and lirone. Crema, Feb. 14, 1602; d. Venice, Jan. 14, 1676. His father, Giovanni Battista Caletti (known also as Bruni), maestro di cappella (choir master) at the Cathedral in Crema, gave him his first music instruction. As a youth Pier Francesco sang under his father's direction in the cathedral choir. The Venetian nobleman Federico Cavalli, who was also mayor of Crema, took him to Venice for further training, and as was the custom, he adopted his sponsor's surname. In December 1616, Cavalli entered the choir of S. Marco in Venice, beginning a life-long association with that institution. He sang there when CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI was directing the choir, and also served as an organist at Ss. Giovanni e Paolo (Saints John and Paul) from 1620 to 1630. In 1638 he turned his attention to the new art form of OPERA and helped to organize an opera company at the Teatro S. Cassiano. His first opera, Le nozze di Teti e di Peleo
