Born in New York, he was initially encouraged in his ambition to be a composer, while still in high school, by his mentor Charles Ives . In the late 1920s and 1930s, he studied with the American composer Walter Piston , the British composer Gustav Holst , and the influential French teacher Nadia Boulanger . Carter taught music at Columbia and Yale universities. After works in the 1940s that ranged from the populist Holiday Overture (1944) to the Neo-Classical Cello Sonata (1948), his first major breakthrough into a distinctive personal style came in the String Quartet no. 1 (1951), in which he began using a technique he called “metric modulation”, in which a new metre is established out of a cross-rhythm in the old metre. He was awarded

When a composer at 97 has two world premieres by two of the world's greatest orchestras on precisely the same night and an Edinburgh Festival concert devoted to his chamber music just a month before, this is not merely a series of concertsthis is an event, which we chose to celebrate with an interview followed by reviews of all three concerts.Editor Elliott Carter works at a more deliberate pace these days (he turned 97 in December). "I used to work all day, but I get tired now, and my memory is not so good." If he interrupts work on a piece, he says, sometimes it is hard to pick up the thread later. "I had to turn down an invitation to go to the Lucerne Festival. I have a lot of commissions." And they keep coming, some so recent it's too soon to discuss them.

Charles Ives , and early excited by the modernist masterpieces of Scriabin , Stravinsky, Berg and which Koussevitzky and Stokowski were then promoting, Carter retains to this day a notion of modernism as a breaking away from convention, a continuing quest for new modes of sound and expression. It was, however, to take him many years to sort out the implications of those tumultuous first impressions. After studying with Holst Symphony No 1 (1942) and Holiday Overture (1944) [Naxos 8.559151], but by the mid-1940s it was evident that the neat forms of neo-classicism and the simplicities of populism were too restrictive to contain his more modernistic aspirations. With the appearance of his majestic Piano Sonata String Quartet No 1 (1951) by way of the grandiose Variations for Orchestra (1956) and coruscating Double Concerto (1961) to the tumultuous Concerto for Orchestra (1969) and kaleidoscopic A Symphony of Three Orchestras (1976), which established his international reputation. The reward for this heroic middle period has been the increasing ease and spontaneity of his composing in more recent decades, enabling him to complete not only the largest orchestral project of his life

Carter studied at Harvard (1926-32), at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris (1932-35) and privately with Boulanger. Back in the USA he worked as musical director of Ballet Caravan (until 1940) and as a teacher. From boyhood he had been acquainted with the music of Schoenberg Varèse Ives and others, but for the moment his works leaned much more towards Stravinsky and Hindemith They included the ballets Pocahontas (1939) and The Minotaur (1947), the Symphony n. 1 (1942) and Holiday Overture (1944). However, in his Piano Sonata (1946) he began to work from the interval content of particular chords, and inevitably to loosen the hold of tonality. A period of withdrawal led to the First Quartet (1951), a work of complex rhythmic interplay, long-ranging atonal melody and unusual form. He returned to vocal composition for a triptych of works for soloist and ensemble. He has also continued the output of large instrumental movements with A Symphony of Three Orchestras (1976), the piano solo Night Fantasies (1980), the Triple Duo (1983) and Penthode for small orchestra (1985). His String Quartet n. 4 (1986) is in a simpler style.
