Over the hill, at fourteen, in the kiddieporn industry, and dumped by the operators who continue to torment her, Molly refuses to lie down and play victim. Her spirit feisty, her tongue salty, she calls upon all her resources cunning, fantasy, fabrication, common sense, humor, sheer will not only to survive but to begin life anew. But it ain't no way easy. Molly's unexpected appearance in Shawnee, where she hopes to connect with a man known by locals only as Turk, turns out to be only the first in a series of ominous events to challenge the investigative skills of the quiet, God-fearing state trooper Roscoe Bragg and young postal inspector Rens Vandermeer. A private plane crashes and leaves an illegally adopted six-year-old boy abandoned on a snowy mountainside; the body of a lost little girl is found in a leaf bag; witnesses disappear, and so does Molly. Turk turns murderous. As Bragg comes closer to uncovering an operation that supplies film and flesh to a nationwide pedophilia club, matters of life and death fall into the surprisingly capable hands of an innocent, childlike eighteen-year-old boy named Stupe.

    Born:
Born in New York City on 11 December 1908, Elliott Carter began to be seriously interested in music in high school and was encouraged at that time by Charles Ives. He attended Harvard University where he studied with Walter Piston, and later went to Paris where for three years he studied with Nadia Boulanger. He then returned to New York to devote his time to composing and teaching.
With the explorations of tempo relationships and texture that characterize his music, Carter is recognized as one of the prime innovators of 20th-century music. The challenges of works such as the Variations for Orchestra Symphony of Three Orchestras, and the concertos and string quartets are richly rewarding. In 1960, Carter was awarded his first Pulitzer Prize for his visionary contributions to the string quartet tradition. Stravinsky considered the orchestral works that soon followed, Double Concerto for harpsichord, piano and two chamber orchestras

    (b. 1908)
Elliott Carter (b. 1908, New York), though a late bloomer in both individual style and in renown, has established himself as one of the most influential figures in American new music. His early music, including the ballet Pocahontas (1939) and his Symphony no. 1 (1942), reflects the neo-classical influences of studies with Walter Piston and Gustav Holst at Harvard (1926-32) and with Stravinskian disciple and master pedagogue Nadia Boulanger in Paris. The late 40's, through the independent polyphony of the Piano Sonata (1946) and Cello Sonata (1948), saw the beginning stages of what would become Carter's distinctive style. His individual voice came to the fore with the composition of the First String Quartet (1951). Composed in the Arizona desert (with the aid of a Guggenheim Fellowship), this piece is characterized by four overlapping movements in a deeply complex rhythmic style, with sharply atonal writing, and a feeling of constant motion and change. This feeling of continuous mutation is most often attributed to Carter's frequent use of "metric modulation" in which two distinct tempi are related by an often small or complex division of the beat. (e.g., one sixteenth note quintuplet of one measure equals one eighth note triplet of the next.) Though this term was not coined by Carter himself, he is most often the composer associated with this rhythmic technique.

Biography ELLIOTT CARTER "is one of America's most distinguished creative artists in any field," said Aaron Copland in nominating Mr. Carter for the Gold Medal of the National Institute of Arts and Letters for Eminence in Music in 1971. Twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize , the first composer to receive the U.S. National Medal of Arts, one of only four composers ever awarded Germany's Ernst Von Siemens Music Prize, and recently made "Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" by the government of France, Elliott Carter is internationally recognized as a pre-eminent American voice in the classical music tradition. Carter was the subject of recent documentaries by London Weekend Television and the Netherlands Broadcasting Corporation. He celebrated his 80th birthday on December 11, 1988 to the accompaniment of salutes from around the world, culminating in December with the U.S. premiere of his recently completed Oboe Concerto . Concurrently, Mr. Carter's complete vocal/chamber works, string quartets

Music In Brief Long View Happening ... Press Elliott Carter is "One of America's most distinguished creative artists in any field" (Aaron Copland). Carter was initially encouraged to become a composer by Charles Ives who had sold insurance to his parents, later going on to study at Harvard with Walter Piston and in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. With his explorations into tempo relationships and texture, Carter's consistently innovative and dynamic output of works is unmistakably American. Sometimes, in works such as the String Quartet No 1 , it is reminiscent of the vastness of the American landscapes; at other times, for example in the Concerto for Orchestra , his complex counterpoint conjures up the dense and hectic environment of the big cities. His intricate, mercurial work often mirrors human interactions and relationships. Recent years have seen an outpouring of major orchestral scores such as Micomic³n and Soundings , along with numerous chamber works. Carter’s late style is marked by transparency and clarity of texture, with a new directness of formal design. His music has been championed by leading conductors including Boulez, Barenboim, Knussen, Nagano, Dohn¡nyi, Levine, Gielen, Holliger and Bamert, and his many awards include official recognition from the governments of France, Germany, Italy, and the U.S.

    Charles Ives
, and early excited by the modernist masterpieces of Scriabin , Stravinsky, Berg and which Koussevitzky and Stokowski were then promoting, Carter retains to this day a notion of modernism as a breaking away from convention, a continuing quest for new modes of sound and expression. It was, however, to take him many years to sort out the implications of those tumultuous first impressions. After studying with Holst Symphony No 1 (1942) and Holiday Overture (1944) [Naxos 8.559151], but by the mid-1940s it was evident that the neat forms of neo-classicism and the simplicities of populism were too restrictive to contain his more modernistic aspirations. With the appearance of his majestic Piano Sonata String Quartet No 1 (1951) by way of the grandiose Variations for Orchestra (1956) and coruscating Double Concerto (1961) to the tumultuous Concerto for Orchestra (1969) and kaleidoscopic A Symphony of Three Orchestras (1976), which established his international reputation. The reward for this heroic middle period has been the increasing ease and spontaneity of his composing in more recent decades, enabling him to complete not only the largest orchestral project of his life

By CHARLES ROSEN Published: December 9, 2007 Correction Appended ELLIOTT CARTER , a celebrated figure on the international stage even before Georg Solti took his Variations for Orchestra to Europe with the Chicago Symphony in 1971, is the most respected and admired of American composers. Festivals devoted to his music have taken place in many cities, including London, Paris and Madrid. Skip to next paragraph Don Hunstein/Sony Classical Elliott Carter, front, and Charles Rosen, right, with Gustav Meier, rear left, and Ralph Kirkpatrick at a recording session of the Double Concerto in 1961. And he is a prophet increasingly honored in his own country. Certain of his chamber works, especially the string quartets, have long been widely performed; less so, the orchestral works. But in recent years those too, though still uncompromisingly modernist, have been taken up around the country, championed above all by Pierre Boulez Daniel Barenboim and James Levine Looking younger every year, and more creative than ever, Mr. Carter is a genial, mild-mannered and unassuming man, extraordinarily cultivated, with a deep interest in art and literature as well as the entire history of music. Perhaps the most striking aspects of his character are a self-confidence and a lack of pretension, a rare combination. Even in the last few years his style has continued to develop, in a series of works that seem to become ever more immediately approachable without renouncing the individuality of his style.

One of the few remaining links to the original generation of experimental composers active between the two world wars, his music continues to challenge, excite and enthrall.
