CACCINI, GIULIO BIOGRAPHY
Born in Tivoli or Rome itself, the singer, lutenist and composer Giulio Caccini studied with Giovanni Animuccia and in the 1560s was taken to Florence by Cosimo I de Medici, who encouraged the further development of his abilities. He won a reputation as a singer and was associated with the early discussions of the Florentine Camerata that led to his use of the so-called stile recitativo , the style of singing that followed, as far as possible, the intonations of speech. Italian monody, accompanied by basso continuo , a chordal instrument and a bass instrument, was an important element in the newly developing form of opera. Stage and Vocal Works Caccinis opera Euridice , the result of a collaboration in which Jacopo Peri wrote the greater part of the music, a setting of libretto by Rinuccini, was staged in Florence in 1600. He worked with other composers on Il rapimento di Cefalo , performed at the same celebrations for the marriage of Henri IV of France and Maria de Medici. In 1602 he published his

Giulio Caccini
This Italian singer, lutenist, harpist and violist often performed in the court of the Medici. Giulio was considered to be the inventor of the "stile recitativo" (recitative style). This being the case, Caccini had a profound effect on the role of vocal music and the development of opera, oratorio, and song. His works included four pieces for stage (three operas one of which was "Euridice"), and a corpus of songs. The aims which he achieved were to make music that had the power of moving the soul and the senses. "Le nuove musiche" (the new music) was a series of essays by Caccini in which he directed singers how to perform in the new style. He wrote out the ornamentation so that it would be incorporated into the piece of music. This was daringly innovative and required that the music be written exactly as it is supposed to be sung. Perhaps his most famous song was "Amarilli". It is still used in vocal repertoires and recitals. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide Expand [+] dojo.byId('bio2').innerHTML = 'This Italian singer, lutenist, harpist and violist often performed in the court of the Medici. He collaborated with J. Peri in the early attempts at musical drama which were the ancestors of modern opera ( Dafne , 1594, and Euridice , 1600), produced at Florence by the circle of musicians and amateurs which met at the houses of G. Bardi and Corsi. He also published in 1601 Le nuove musiche , a collection of songs which is of great importance in the history of singing as well as in that of the transition period of musical composition. He was a lyric composer rather than a dramatist like Peri, and the genuine beauty of his works makes them acceptable even at the present day.
