Little is known about his early life, but he was born in Rome, the son of the carpenter Michelangelo Caccini; he was the older brother of the Florentine sculptor Giovanni Caccini . In Rome he studied the lute , the viol and the harp , and began to acquire a reputation as a singer. In the Cosimo de' Medici was so impressed with his talent that he took the young Caccini to Florence for further study. By 1579, Caccini was singing at the Medici court. He was a tenor , and he was able to accompany himself on the viol; he sang at various entertainments, including weddings and affairs of state, and took part in the sumptuous intermedi of the time, the elaborate musical, dramatic, visual spectacles which were one of the precursors of opera. Also during this time he took part in the movement of humanists, writers, musicians and scholars of the ancient world who formed the

(Scroll down to end of article to see sheet music available) Giulio Caccini's "Ave Maria" was never 'lost' but it was unknown to most music lovers in the Twentieth Century. In the last decade of the 20th Century it achieved remarkable popularity, and versions were recorded in the 1990s by Lesley Garrett, Charlotte Church and, arranged for a Cello soloist, by Julian Lloyd-Webber . Andrea Bocelli and Sumi Jo have also recently recorded new arrangements. You are probably on this page because you are wondering about the history of the piece, or because you have recently heard it for the first time and want to know more. This page will answer a lot of your questions (& if you can help fill in the gaps, please email the webmaster - email link at the end of the page). GIULIO CACCINI: A scholarly publication could tell you more, but....GIULIO CACCINI was born around 1545 in Rome (or Tivoli?) and died in 1618 in Florence. He was a member of the Camerata - a group of nobles and musicians who met to discuss science, drama and music, and was particularly involved in the attempts to add music to ancient Greek drama, which led to Opera. Caccini himself is often credited with the invention of the recitative style of singing so essential to early music dramas. His "Euridice" was not the first opera performed - that credit usually goes to an opera of the same name by Peri, but it was probably the first to have been written.

Italian composer and singer. He accompanied his patron, Cosimo I , to Florence in the 1570s; there he became associated with the Camerata, an academy that dedicated much attention to producing a revival of ancient Greek drama. His Euridice (1600), embodying the Camerata's ideals, was the first opera to be published and was one of the first two surviving operas; the other, also titled Euridice Dafne (1598) was the first opera of all. Caccini's Le nuove musiche (1602), a collection of songs with basso continuo, was of landmark importance in establishing the new monodic style. document.writeln(AAMB2); More on "Giulio Caccini" from Britannica Concise monody - Accompanied solo song style of the early 17th century. opera - Musical drama made up of vocal pieces with orchestral accompaniment, overtures, and interludes. Giulio Caccini
Composer and singer. After instruction with Giovanni Animuccia in Rome, he studied with Scipione delle Palle in Florence, under Medici patronage. By 1579 he was singing at the Medici court. His earliest known compositional endeavor came in 1589, when he contributed a song to an intermedio for the marriage of Duke Ferdinand I. Initially his fame spread chiefly through his singing: by the 1580s he was singing regularly for Ippolito Aldobrandini in Ferrara and for the Este court there. During the 1570s and 1580s he began a celebrated association with the "camerata" of Florence, and partly under the influence of its membersincluding Vincenzo Galilei and Bardi he began composing in a vocal style that, as he declared, more closely approximated speech. After a brief appointment in Rome as Bardi's secretary (1592), Caccini returned to Florence; during the 1590s he served the Medici court, where he became music director in 1600. That year he discussed his new vocal style in the preface to his opera Euridice.

Giulio Caccini
c.1545-1618 Composer and singer.
Caccini was brought to Florence as a youth by Cosimo I de' Medici, who supported him. Caccini met at the house of Count Bardi, where he was a member of the Florentine Camerata. Caccini was greatly influenced by the other members praise of the Greek dramatic style that he set out to create a new style of song where the notes were almost spoken. For this reason, Caccini is credited with being the inventor of the stile recitativo, a style which is one of the foundations of operatic style. Caccini was very important in the early developments of opera, including writing parts of Peri's Euridice even though he and Peri were rivals. In 1600 Caccini was appointed musical director of the Medici Court replacing Emilio de' Cavalieri. Caccini continued on at the Medici Court, and wrote numerous madrigals as well as being an influential teacher. It is his association with the Florentine Camerata , and his contributions to opera that he is chiefly remembered for.

Italian composer working in Florence, and one of the most important pioneers of the new monody. Indeed, Caccini boasts of having invented the genre himself, although there are some examples prior to his publications entitled "Nuove Musiche" in 1602 and 1614. The new monodic style involved a virtuoso high voice with written-out ornaments, accompanied by simple chordal bass. This new separation in function was of course integral to the subsequent development of Baroque music as a whole. Although one cannot give Caccini the full credit he thought he deserved, his importance can hardly be over-stated. He is featured prominently in any historical anthology of song forms which includes the 17th century. MIDI FILE - "Amor che attendi" Karadar Bertoldi Ensemble Studio Informatico Anesin
