Her first recorded appearance in public is as a singer at the wedding of Henry IV of France and Maria de Medici in ; her father took part in organizing and composing the music for the sumptuous entertainment involved. In when the entire Caccini family visited France , Henry praised her singing effusively—"you are the best singer in all of France"—and asked her to stay at his court; however the Florentine officials denied his request, and she returned to Italy, where her fame continued to grow. Shortly afterwards she attracted the attention of Claudio Monteverdi as well, who praised her singing and instrumental performance. In

Stephan Sutkowski, director

[ VERSION FRANCAISE ]
The Warsaw Chamber Opera was founded in 1961 by Stefan Sutkowski , who has served as its Managing and Artistic Director ever since. The company's inaugural production was G.B.Pergolesi's La serva padrona (4 September 1961). At present, the Warsaw Chamber Opera company consists of 2 directors, 2 designers, 7 conductors, over 75 soloists, and small-size symphony orchestras (the Warsaw Sinfonietta and the Orchestra of Warsaw Chamber Opera). It also has the period-instruments ensemble Musicae Antiquae Collegium Varsoviense, a Mime Group, the 40-strong Chamber Choir and the Choir specializing in Old Orthodox Music. The Warsaw Chamber Opera is pursuing a diverse activity. Its repertoire spans a wide variety of musical styles and genres: from medieval mystery plays to the operas of the Baroque and Classical periods, 18th century pantomimes, the operas by Rossini and Donizetti, as well as works by contemporary composers, several of which were commissioned by the company. The Warsaw Chamber Opera ensembles also give regular concerts featuring chamber, oratorio and symphonic music of various epochs. Another major artistic project realised by Stefan Sutkowski and the Warsaw Chamber Opera is the Baroque Opera Festival, held annually since 1993. The event enriched the company's repertoire with works by J.Peri, C.Monteverdi, H.Purcell, J.Blow, F.Caccini and J.B.Lully. Special attention was paid to Monteverdi's output, eventually giving rise to, in the autumn of 1995, to the Claudio Monteverdi Festival, another annual fixture in the Warsaw Chamber Opera calendar. Within its framework, the company has produced all of Monteverdi's extant stage works, including three full-length operas L'Orfeo, Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria and L'incoronazione di Poppea.

Biographies of the woman called La Cecchina (the Songird) noting abilities as vocalist, instrumentalist, and composer from the Here Of A Sunday Morning
    http://www.hoasm.org/VA/CacciniF.html
    Francesca Caccini
Francesca Caccini, often called "La Cecchina" ("The Songbird"), was born in Florence, Italy, on the eighteenth of September, 1587. Music was a huge part of Francesca's life from almost before her birth, as her father, Guilio Caccini , was a well respected and prolific composer, and her mother, Lucia Gagnolanti, was a singer herself. After Lucia's premature death while Francesca was still quite young, Guilio married another singer, Margherita della Scala. Francesca's younger sister, Settimia, like Francesca was a singer and composer, and their brother, Pompeo, also was known as a singer during his time. With a background like that, coupled with her father's influence, a musical career utilizing the talents that seemed to run in the Caccini family must have been almost inevitable for Francesca. Francesca's musical training began early, and she was known to have played the keyboard, lute, guitar, and harp, in addition to her singing for which she was most famous. In addition to her practical music skills, she was also well trained in composition, and it is reasonable to assume that her father was responsible for much of her musical instruction. However, Francesca's education was not limited to music, and she was also well versed in literature. In fact, she was known as a poet as well as a singer, and probably wrote the lyrics for most of the songs in Il primo libro, the known exceptions being "Difpiegate" (page 97) by Ceba, and "Laudate Dominum de Celis" (page 69), which is a setting of Psalm 148. It has been said that "Che defia di faper che cofa e amore" (page 90) was written by Chiabera, but there is no definitive evidence of this.

I created this website to enable women's compositions before 1900 to become more accessible to students and educators. I felt that this was important step in promoting the acknowledgment of women composers in music education. This data-base contains the following:
    1. Literature on the history of women composers before 1900, including:
    • A bibliography of forty-six books related to the subject. Links to where fifteen of these books can be purchased on the Internet. Descriptions of seven of these books (retrieved from purchase site).
