William Byrd II
William Byrd II is a key literary figure from the first half of the eighteenth century in British America. Engaging in the many genres then available to the educated cosmopolitan elite, Byrd wrote treatises dealing with medicine, science, and agriculture, as well as political briefs, diaries, character sketches, letters, and travel narratives. Especially in his History of the Dividing Line, Byrd developed a distinctive style that posed satire against disinterested observation. Such a style aptly recorded the contradictory life of a genteel colonial who understood that, for English readers, the New World made him both a suspect stranger and a valuable witness.
His father, William Byrd I (1652-1704), emigrated from England in the late 1660s to inherit from his uncle a growing fur trade and some 3,000 acres of land on the Virginia frontier; he became very knowledgeable about the geography of the interior and a valuable negotiator with local Indian tribes. He married Mary Horsmanden Filmer, a member of the Cavalier elite who had fled Cromwell's England. The elder Byrd participated with Nathaniel Bacon in a rebellion against the royally appointed Governor William Berkeley, but ultimately Byrd ended up on Berkeley's side. He was elected to the House of Burgesses the next year and was appointed a member of the governor's Council in 1682.

In 1588 he published Psalmes, Sonets and Songs of Sadnes and Pietie, and in the same year contributed two madrigals to Nicolas Yonge's Musica Transalpina . In 1589 appeared Songs of Sundrie Natures , a second edition of which was issued in 1610. In the same year he published Liber Primus Sacrarum Cantionum , a second series of which was brought out in 1591. In 1590 two madrigals by Byrd were included in Thomas Watson's First Sett of Italian Madrigalls Englished ; one of these seems to have been sung before Queen Elizabeth on her visit to Lord Hertford at Elvetham in 1591. In April 1592 Byrd was still living at Harlington, but about 1593 he became possessed of the remainder of a lease of Stondon Place, Essex, a farm of some 200 acres, belonging to William Shelley, who was shortly afterwards convicted of high treason. The property was sequestrated, and on the 15th of July 1595 Byrd obtained a crown lease of it for the lives of his eldest son Christopher and his daughters Elizabeth and Rachel. On the death of Shelley his son bought back his estates (in 1604), whereupon his widow attempted to oust Byrd from Stondon Place, on the ground that it formed part of her jointure. Byrd was upheld in his possession of the property by James I. (

      About
William Byrd and Thomas Tallis were the first two composers of note in England. They worked together at the Chapel Royal in London and were the only musicians with a license to publish music in England in the sixteenth century. Byrd's adventurous polyphony was harmonically and rhythmically progressive.

The History of Barbecue in the South
    The Etymology of Barbecue
The roads of the Southern United States are lined with a succession of grinning pigs, advertising the availability of barbecue in countless restaurants. The origins of barbecue in the South, however, are traceable to a period long before the smiling pig became a fixture on Southern roadsides. The etymology of the term is vague, but the most plausible theory states that the word "barbecue" is a derivative of the West Indian term "barbacoa," which denotes a method of slow-cooking meat over hot coals. Bon Appetit magazine blithely informs its readers that the word comes from an extinct tribe in Guyana who enjoyed "cheerfully spitroasting captured enemies." The Oxford English Dictionary traces the word back to Haiti, and others claim (somewhat implausibly) that "barbecue" actually comes from the French phrase "barbe a queue" , meaning "from head to tail." Proponents of this theory point to the whole-hog cooking method espoused by some barbecue chefs. Tar Heel magazine posits that the word "barbecue" comes from a nineteenth century advertisement for a combination whiskey bar beer hall

    William Byrd in Two Worlds
    Volume I, Chapter 4
SUMMARY This essay explores the American identity in the colonial period. In William ByrdÕs story we see a man torn between his attachments to England and to America. In the eighteenth century the two identities could pull the settlers in seemingly opposite directions. ByrdÕs life introduces us to several important facets of colonial life, including politics, trade, and society. And it reminds us of AmericaÕs continuing political and psychological link to the "mother country.
FROM THE TEXT The sun went down behind the steep, forested ridge of the Alleghenies. Resplendent stars shone brightly in the clear autumn sky while bear, deer, and opossum foraged among the darkened trees. In the midst of a vast and potent wilderness there glowed a solitary campfire, a flickering circle of light illuminating tents, horses, and a cluster of men. The men standing by the campfire were working their way through swamps and brush surveying a dividing line between the colonies of Virginia and North Carolina. Their supplies had long since run low, and most of their horses were lame. Nonetheless, their camp was festive: this was October 30, 1728, the king's birthday, and patriotism led them to consume spirits and discharge fireworks in celebration. The men were doing their best, toasting King George II with the last of their liquor, a bottle of cherry brandy carefully preserved by their leader, William Byrd, and drinking to the queen and all her royal progeny with drafts of pure water from an Allegheny tributary. To complete the celebration, they set off explosives, fashioned of green cane from a nearby field and laid in the fire. The air within the cane joints expanded and punctured the night air with loud and satisfying bangs.

William Byrd English composers. His entire life was marked by contradictions; as a true Renaissance man, he did not fit easily into categories. He lived well into the seventeenth century without writing songs in the new Baroque fashion, but his superbly constructed keyboard works marked the beginning of the Baroque organ and harpsichord style. Although he was nominally an Anglican court composer for much of his life, he spent his last years composing for the Roman liturgy, and died in relative obscurity. The sudden change may well have driven him away from court. He shows up again in his mid-twenties as organist and choirmaster of Lincoln Cathedral , where the clergy apparently had to reprimand him for playing at excessive length during services.
