Notes on the Music
T he first European music notation system was neumes, which were totally musical signs - they indicated the sounds and techniques to be used to perform the music. About the 9th century, theorists got the upper hand in music, and everything had to be fitted into diatonic modes to be officially acceptable. Of course, good musicians have always insisted on singing in tune and have always cared more about their sound than about theory, so musica ficta came to mean the rules that musicians used to translate from modes back to good music, and that is the way I always interpret them. A A My Ladye Nevells Booke was completed in 1591 by one of Byrd's colleagues at the Royal chapel, possibly corrected by Byrd personally, then presented to Queen Elizabeth I, and Parthenia was engraved by the finest engraver in England, also with the care appropriate for a royal gift, mostly from composers' manuscripts, in 1612. My other major source is the folio of Catholic composers' works copied from divers sources, probably by a Francis Tregian between 1609 and 1619, known today as the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book A
part of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book S o, printing is black and white, and music isn't. A musician has to peer through the limitations of notation to hear a live person, the composer, then bring that composer's ideas to life in the performer's world. The further back one goes in time, the more necessary it is to accept that the composer's world can never exist again - too much of that world has been lost to truly recreate it. My approach is to study sources as close as possible to the time, apply the rules of the time, use instruments of the time, then let my ears be the guide, based on the whole oeuvre of the composer.

William Byrd (1543 - 1623) BACKGROUND AND HISTORICAL PERSPSECTIVE By: Jason R. Ogan The greatest English composer of his generation, comparable in stature to his most distinguished continental contemporaries, William Byrd was a versatile composer. Although remaining a Catholic, loyalty that cost him considerable trouble in times of persecution in England, he served as a member of the Chapel Royal, providing music for the liturgy of the Church of England and, on a more private scale, for his fellow-Catholics. Biographical Information on William Byrd Links CHURCH MUSIC Byrd's compositions for the church can be separated into two categories; those for the Catholic liturgy and those designed for the officially recognised Church of England. The first category includes settings of the Mass for three, four and five voices, and a large quantity of other works for the various seasons of the church year. For the Church of England Byrd wrote a Great Service and three other service settings, using the texts of the Anglican liturgy. In addition to the above compositions Byrd composed a number of anthems and psalm-settings, and consort songs with sacred texts of one sort or another.

The Significance of William Byrd and His History of the Dividing Line
William Byrd II of Westover Virginia (1674-1744) , was one of the first Americans to document his appreciation of the vast American wilderness. Byrd's perception of the natural world was greatly influenced by the ideas linking the natural world to science which emerged in the Age of Enlightenment, between the decades of the late seventeenth century and the French Revolution in 1789. Colonial disdain of the American wilderness, which had it's roots in the biblical creation myth, was prevalent in America during Byrd's early years, but Byrd's personal history allowed for heavy European influence on the development of his thought and identity. The contradictions between these two spheres of influence left Byrd struggling to establish an identity and a conception of the wilderness that could be accepted in two very distinct worlds. Byrd's History of the Dividing Line , an account of the surveying trip he lead to draw the boundary line between Virginia and North Carolina, reveals the dichotomy of his own identity as well as his perception of America and the American wilderness. By examining the text, it is possible to see the interplay between Byrd's colonial views of the wilderness and his more progressive appreciation and even celebration of the wilderness. The romantic quality of his writing left the History without a greater context until the nineteenth century when the Romantic movement began. This single text, and its treatment through the ages, represents the perception of the American wilderness as a concept, both at home and abroad, over the span of three centuries.

Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
William Byrd will come as a delightful surprise to students who come to colonial literature with an expectation of unrelieved Puritanism. As a Cavalier author, he picks up where Morton left off, only in Virginia one hundred years later. Much of his charm as a writer derives from the high polish he gives to even his most minor pieces, chiefly by the use of irony. This irony makes his writing constantly entertaining, but its real import is often elusive. Amid all the understatements and overstatements, the sarcasm and the wry humor, it is difficult to find a passage where Byrd does not have his tongue in his cheek or where he simply conveys his views in a straightforward manner. In his letters he compares colonial America to early biblical times, both those of Eden before the fall and those of the promised land of Canaan under the patriarchs. The comparison is clearly overstated and leaves one doubting whether Byrd doesn't really prefer the fleshpots of Egypt and the fallen world of England. Furthermore, while America lacks the refined vices of England, its national blessings of ease and fertility lead to the crude sins of idleness and overindulgence, further encouraged by the importation of slaves and rum. Yet Byrd clearly glories in his own truly biblical mastership over bondmen and his moderate appreciation of alcohol, and he boasts of his own sexual potency under the guise of blaming American women for breeding like rabbits.

    http://www.jamesriverplantations.org/Westover.html
Westover was built circa 1730 by William Byrd II, the founder of Richmond. It is noteworthy for its secret passages, magnificent gardens, and architectural details. The grounds and garden are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, but the house is not open to the public. Westover was named for Henry West, fourth Lord Delaware and son of Thomas West, Governor of Virginia. The shady tulip poplars framing the building are more than 150 years old. "Ancient" is the best word to describe the boxwood hedges which enclose the lawn. The house is considered one of the most outstanding example of Georgian architecture in America. Of special notice is the unusually steepness of the roof, the tall chimneys in pairs at both ends. Another special touch is the elaborate doorway, which continues to be recognized as "the Westover doorway" despite its adaptation to many other buildings. The special charm of the house lies in its elegant yet extremely simple form and proportions, combined with its perfect setting in the landscape, the essence of the artistic ideals of its period adapted to the style of living in Colonial Virginia. The two wings were originally identical and not connected to the three-story central structure. The east wing, which once contained the famous Byrd library of more than 4,000 volumes, burned during the War Between the States.

    Family Tree
Pennsylvania had William Penn and Virginia had the great William Byrd. Colonel William Byrd II (1674-1744), to give him his full title, was born on his father's plantation in Virginia but brought up in Essex and remained in England for most of his early life. Aged thirty when his father died in 1704, William returned to Virginia to manage the family's 26,000 acre estate and later built a fine house there which stands today. He became President of the Colonial Council, on which he sat as a Member for 35 years, and in 1733 established two towns, Richmond on the James river - now the capital - and Petersburg on the Appomattuck. He was truly one of the founding fathers of the modern State of Virginia whose southern boundary he personally established. Colonel William Byrd II William was hardy and energetic and, like most Virginians of his time, often in the saddle. A great traveller, he was no ordinary pioneer: this was a man of culture, wide accomplishments and considerable charm, a genial host who had powerful friends on both sides of the Atlantic. He crossed that ocean ten times and "Golden Rose", the ship in which he often sailed, is in the background to Hans Hyssing's portrait of him.

The William Byrd Chapter was organized in 1917 by eighteen women, led by Organizing Regent Miss Frances Elizabeth Quinby. The chapter was named for Colonel William Byrd, II, founder of Richmond. A lover of books, Byrd collected more than 3,600 volumes. His example inspired the William Byrd Chapter to gather more than 30,000 volumes in its Senior Visions program to aid in promoting literacy during 2002-2007. These books were sorted, cleaned, and distributed to several organizations in the Richmond area.
In April 2005, the chapter dedicated plaques that were placed on the graves of Chief Justice John Marshall and his wife Polly, honoring them as Revolutionary War Patriots. William Byrd (1542? - 1623) As a young man, Byrd is thought to have studied under Thomas Tallis but that hasn't been confirmed for certain. What is clear is that in later life he worked closely with the older composer when he took up employment at the Chapel Royal, the Queen's church. There they collaborated extensively, shared duties as organist, and also shared exclusive rights (granted by the monarch) to publish sheet music for the country. For example they jointly published the "Cantiones Sacrae" which consisted of 17 motets by each composer, the whole publication being dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. Being a leading Catholic working for a protestant Queen must have been something of a delicate position for the composer, but one that he obviously managed with diplomacy. While he composed music publicly in English for the Anglican church, he also found time to write more privately for the Catholic church such as three settings of the Latin mass. After Tallis' death, Byrd was solely responsible for music publication in the country. He also went on to compose music which was a leading example to contemporary composers and highly influential to later English composers. The music included much for voices and for organ, including of course substantial quantities for the church, motets, madrigals, preludes, grounds, variations and "fancies" (freely constructed works similar to "fantasies"). The "Pavan and Galliard" were a pair of dances in contrasting styles frequently played one after the other, and Byrd wrote several such pairs. The
