His organ works comprise a central part of the standard organ repertoire and are frequently performed at recitals and church services. He wrote in a wide variety of vocal and instrumental idioms, and his style strongly influenced many composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach . Buxtehude, along with Heinrich Sch¼tz , is considered today to be the most important German composer of the mid-Baroque.

He is thought to have been born with the name Diderich Buxtehude. Scholars dispute both the year and country of his birth, although most now accept it taking place in 1637 in Helsingborg Sk¥ne , at the time part of Denmark (but now part of Sweden ). His obituary stated that "he recognized Denmark as his native country, whence he came to our region; he lived about 70 years".

BUXTEHUDE, DIETERICH BIOGRAPHY
For a long time knowledge of Buxtehude's works was limited to the organ works and his major sacred choral works. Along with other Baroque composers, Buxtehude was "rediscovered" in the mid-nineteenth century, and his organ works were republished as an example of the style current before J.S. Bach. Interest in his chamber music works, however, has only gathered momentum in recent years. In these Buxtehude frolics with great imagination between learned contrapuntal traditions and a freer, more fanciful style. On the whole. Buxtehude's imagination is amazing, and gives his works a lively, improvisational feel. With our present-day fully-rounded picture of Buxtehude's works we can unhesitatingly count him as the greatest composer of the northern European Baroque in the period between and J.S. Bach

Dietrich Buxtehude
Danish organist and composer of church, chamber and organ music, possibly the most influential composer of his time. His early youth and birthplace remain a mystery. Most scholars recognize that he studied music with his father. Being the organist at Helsingbor (c.1638-41) and at Helsingor (c. 1642-71) his father was most likely qualified to teach and have a great influence on him. Buxtehude moved to Lubeck in 1688 and became organist of St. Mary's Church. In Lubeck he rose to such fame that musicians from northern Germany came to the city to meet the composer and attend his concerts. He was visited by Handel in 1703 and by bach in 1705. According to legend Bach walked more than 200 miles to meet him. Bach did meet him and study for several months in 1705 and 1706. Both composers wanted to follow Buxtehude at St. Mary's, but neither one wanted to marry his daughter as that was a condition for the position. As part of his duties Buxtehude composed for public occasions, as well as, funerals and marriages in the city. His compositions include vocal, chamber and instrumental music, much of which was not discovered until the twentieth century.

B ... Z DIETRICH BUXTEHUDE (1637-1707)Having been born half a century after Heinrich Schütz, the 'father of German musicians', and a little less than half a century before J. S. Bach , Dietrich Buxtehude born at Oldesloe, near Lübeck in 1637, died in Lübeck, May 9, 1707 was placed in the unique position of being a living link between the founder of Protestant Baroque music and its greatest master. The road leading from the Kapellmeister at the Dresden court to the organist of St. Mary's, Lübeck, and on to the cantor of the Thomasschule in Leipzig virtually signifies the progress of 17th century German music. When interest in Buxtehude revived after a long period of oblivion his reputation as the most famous organist in Germany prior to Bach was the first fact to be remembered. The discovery that he was also an outstanding composer of sacred vocal music, and in that sphere of composition worthy to rank with Schütz and Bach, has only been made in the course of the last few decades. All his life first in Helsingborg, later in Elsinore and finally for almost forty years in Lübeck Buxtehude was employed as organist. He was never a cantor, yet his interest in vocal music was profound. About 120 works of vocal church music have survived, most of them because they were collected by his friend Gustav Düben, a Kapellmeister at the court in Stockholm.

    Dietrich Buxtehude: 1637-1707
Successor to Franz Tunder at Lübeck's Church of Mary in 1668, Buxtehude began the tradition of Abendmusiken five years later. The annual concert series began the fifth Sunday before Christmas and featured sacred works for organ, choir and orchestra (a lasting tradition in that church for 137 years). In 1705 Bach walked 250 miles from Arnstadt to attend the Abendmusiken and overstayed his leave by three months. Buxtehude was known in his lifetime chiefly as an organ virtuoso and teacher whose students included Bruhns . In a letter to Forkel Carl Philipp Emanuel identified Buxtehude as a composer whose works his father much admired.
