Ferruccio Benvenuto Busoni Italian pianist and composer. F erruccio Benvenuto Michelangiolo Dante Busoni was born in Empoli near Florence in Italy on April 1, 1866. He died in Berlin on July 27 1924. He was an Italian composer, pianist and conductor. His father was a talented Italian clarinetist and his mother was the German piano virtuoso Anna Weiss. Therefore, Ferruccio came to represent a remarkable synthesis of the two differing attitudes to music.
Busoni was a child prodigy, and at the age of seven, he already played for an audience. In 1874, at the age of eight, he gave a concert in Trieste, many other appearances followed. I n 1875, his father Ferdinando decided to move to Vienna to allow his son to study in the prestigious Conservatory in that city. This experience, rather disappointing from a didactic point of view, was nonetheless fundamental for his discovery of new musical worlds and convinced the family to settle in Graz, where Busoni, from 1878 to 1881, took lessons of harmony, counterpoint and composition from the famous maestros W. A. Remy and Willem Mayer and came close with Rubinstein and Brahms. I n 1884 at the age of eighteen, he began composing and wrote his cantata 'Il Sabato del Villagio' after

Music Loses an Eminent Figure in the Passing of Ferruccio Busoni
BERLIN, July 27. - Ferruccio Busoni, emiment concert pianist, composer and one of the best-known pedagogues of this generation, died here today of heart disease. He was professor in the State Academy of Arts.
In 1891 Busoni made his first visit to the United States as professor of piano at the New England Conservatory, returning to Europe two years later, making his home in Berlin, where he resided off and on until his death, making frequent concert tours and spending the season 1907-1908 in Vienna, where he succeeded Emil Sauer as teacher of the Meisterklasse at the Conservatory. In 1909-1911 he made highly successful tours of the United States and in 1913 went to Bologna as director of the Liceo and conductor of symphony concerts. The same year he was decorated with the cross of a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur, Rossini and Verdi being the only other Italians to have been so honored. During the war he resided in Zurich but returned to Berlin after the cessation of hostilities.
Busoni achieved fame in three phases of his profession, as a pianist, a pedagogue and as a composer. As a pianist he was an extraordinary technician and, though the charge was brought against him of sacrificing beauty of tone to volume, he always played with extraordinary fire, which he imparted to his pupils as well, many of them being among the foremost concert artists of the present time. His compositions cover practically the entire field of music from opera and symphony to incidental music. He also wrote treatises on musical subjects and made numerous transcriptions of compositions by Bach and edited the entire piano works of Liszt and Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavichord."

Busoni, Ferruccio Dante Benvenuto
0.07 sec. write_ads(AdsNum, 0)
Italian pianist, composer, and music critic. Much of his music was for the piano, but he also composed several operas including Doktor Faust , completed by Philipp Jarnach after Busoni's death. His work shows the influence of Liszt and his ballet score for Doktor Faust shows his debt to Bizet. Specimens of his style at its best are to be found in his later sonatinas, from Faust , and the monumental Fantasia contrappuntistica He rejected Wagnerian music-drama, and sought to re-establish links with great composers of the past, notably Johann Sebastian Bach and Mozart, and the commedia dell'arte. His opera Doktor Faust Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music (1907), were attacked by conservatives such as Hans Pfitzner.
