Hans von Bülow H ans Guido Freiherr von Bülow was born in Dresden on January 8 1830 and died in Cairo on February 12 1894. He was a conductor, pianist and composer and one of the inventors of the archetype of the star conductor; he was probably the first to become a star musician interpreting the orchestral music of others. At the age of nine he began studying with Friedrich Wieck Robert Schumann's father in low, and Louis Plaidy, and consulted with Franz Liszt. Later he studied in Dresden with Max Eberwein and in Leipzig, working assiduously under Plaidy and Hauptmann; he also met Raff and other musicians at Stuttgart in 1846-1848. H
R ichard Wagner found in von Bülow a superior talent to Karl Ritter, who he had promoted into musical leadership in Zürich. Von Bülow was also more in accord with Wagner's intentions, so Wagner backed Von Bülow while undercutting Ritter, leading to Von Bülow conducting his first opera, 'Il barbiere di Siviglia', in 1850. He took the unprecedented step of memorizing entire scores of the works he conducted and led extended and painstaking rehearsals, which resulted in his dismissal.
I H e married Liszt's daughter Cosima in 1857, she was the natural daughter of Franz Liszt and the Countess d'Agoult, while subsisting as guest conductor and pianist.

Raff's circle of friends

Raff's time in Stuttgart during 1847-48 was artistically and financially amongst the most difficult of his life. It was brightened, however, by the making of two lifelong friendships. Firstly, he was taken under the wing of a retired music teacher, the widowed Kunigunde Heinrich . Through her he met the very talented youth Hans Guido von Bülow who had just moved with his parents from their home city of Dresden. He showed great promise as a piano virtuoso and as a showpiece for him Raff wrote his Fantasy on themes from Kuchen's opera "Der Prätendent" WoO.7 and the student played it at a 1848 New Year's concert in Stuttgart to great acclaim. A few month's later, however, Bülow moved on the Leipzig to further his studies. Raff's piano piece was subsequently lost. They continued in contact and met again three years later in Weimar, where Bülow described Raff as "my older brother" (he was eight years Raff's junior). The older man interceded with Bülow's mother, convincing her that her son had a career ahead of him in music. Raff's role as Bülow's mentor was firmly established, but came under strain as Raff became disenchanted with Liszt and the Weimar school. Only in 1859 did matters improve with Bülow programming Raff's piano and chamber music in Berlin, where he now lived. To cement matters, Raff dedicated his

Wagner

Wagner Society of New York

The greatest composer of German opera, Richard Wagner was the youngest of nine children of Friedrich and Johanna Wagner. His father, a police registrar, died 6 months after Wagner was born, and his mother was remarried the following year to Ludwig Geyer, an actor and portrait painter, who moved the family to Dresden. Geyer died in 1821, and in 1827 the family returned to Leipzig.
Wagner was attracted to the theater at an early age. His first creative effort was a spoken tragedy, Leubald and Adelaide (1828), which was heavily influenced by Shakespeare and Goethe. He decided at once, however, that he must also write music, and he proceeded to teach himself the rudiments of composition, supplementing them with the study of scores. His formal training was briefabout 6 months in 1831-32 with the Leipzig cantor C. T. Weinlig. During the 1830s, Wagner held a series of conducting posts with small theatrical companies, and he wrote two operas, Die Feen (The Fairies, 1834) and
