Collection # 329
Collection of Rare Letters
PROVENANCE: SCOPE/CONTENT: When the collection was in Rózsa's home, he kept it close to his studio and the piano where he composed. Asked if he would miss having them near, he replied, "yes, every one of them!" But having spent many years of his life teaching at USC, he said, nothing could make him happier than to see young people draw the same inspiration from the letters that he has. Most of the correspondence relates to the composition, performance and business of music - Claude Debussy's 1899 missive about re-arranging a meeting with his publisher, for example, and Liszt's 1880 letter about going to Budapest to teach. Other writings deal with the mundane realities of daily life. Recurrent themes include the payment of debts (Liszt, 1853: "accept the repayment of my small debt, 8 Thaler, 18 gr."), the climate (Puccini, 1913: "My dear chap...Milan is terrible in winter and impossible in summer") and social amenities (Sergei Rachmaninov, 1906: "Birthday greettings to Nina Kushetz." Most of the letters in the collection were handwritten, though some of the more recent ones were typed. In a 1949 letter, which Rózsa said was his favorite, Richard Strauss attempts - in German - to explain to actor Lionel Barrymore the nature of his relationship with the Nazi party. Other items range from Tchaikovsky's apology, dated 1889, for being a tardy correspondent, which bears his large inked signature, to a faded typed message from Marc-Antoine Charpentier, dated Paris, 1932, regarding the broadcast of his "Poemes chantes" over Radio Paris.

The Boyhood of Some Famous Pianists
by C.A. Browne So accustomed are we to the use and abuse of the pianoforte that we seldom stop to consider that this most remarkable musical instrument is the outcome of a steady and systematic growth from age to age, and that it has a long and distinguished genealogy which stretches far back into the dim and distant past - to the biblical times of dulcimer and psaltery - and coming down through the days of the Greek and Roman harps and lyres, which were stuck with a quill or a little stick of ivory or polished wood called a plectrum. Franz Liszt "Three things" said Mozart, "are necessary to a good performer", and he pointed to his head, his heart and the tips of his fingers - meaning that we must have intellect, sympathy and skill in technic. Surely these gifts were united in the fair-haired, blue-eyed Hungarian lad who was born on October 22, 1811 in the village of Raiding, and was destined to become the greatest and most adored pianist of all.

    Biography
Hans Guido von B¼low was one of the inventors of the archetype of the star conductor; he was probably the first to become a star musician interpreting the orchestral music of others. He had early piano and composition studies, numbering among his teachers Friedrich Wieck and Louis Plaidy, and consulted with Liszt . He was intended for a law career, but he heard Wagner conduct Lohengrin in 1850, making von B¼low determined to conduct even though he realized he lacked the creative spark for composition. Wagner found in von B¼low a superior talent to Karl Ritter, who he had promoted into musical leadership in Z¼rich. von B¼low was also more in accord with Wagner 's intentions, so Wagner backed von B¼low while undercutting Ritter, leading to von B¼low conducting his first opera, Il barbiere di seviglia, in 1850. He took the unprecedented step of memorizing entire scores of the works he conducted and led extended and painstaking rehearsals, which resulted in his dismissal.

B¼low was born in Dresden , and from the age of nine he was a student of Friedrich Wieck (the father of Clara Schumann ). However, his parents insisted that he study law instead of music, and sent him to Leipzig At Leipzig he met Franz Liszt , and on hearing some music of Richard Wagner —specifically, the premiere of Lohengrin in —he decided to ignore the dictates of his parents and make himself a career in music instead. He obtained his first conducting job in Z¼rich , on Wagner's recommendation, in 1850. Notoriously tactless, B¼low alienated many musicians with whom he worked. He was dismissed from his Z¼rich job for this reason, but at the same time he was beginning to win renown for his ability to conduct new and complex works without a score. In 1851 he became a student of Liszt, marrying Liszt's daughter Cosima in 1857. They had two daughters:

At the age of nine he began to study music under Friedrich Wieck as part of a genteel education. It was only after an illness while studying law at Leipzig University in 1848 that he determined upon music as a career. At this time he was a pupil of Moritz Hauptmann. In 1849 revolutionary politics took possession of him. In the Berlin Abendpost , a democratic journal, the young aristocrat poured forth his opinions, which were strongly coloured by Wagner's Art and Revolution . Wagner's influence was musical no less than political, for a performance of Lohengrin under Liszt at Weimar in 1850 completed von B¼low's determination to abandon a legal career. From Weimar he went to Z¼rich, where the exile Wagner instructed him in the elements of conducting. But he soon returned to Weimar and Liszt; and in 1853 he made his first concert tour, which extended from Vienna to Berlin. Next he became principal professor of the piano at the Stern Academy, and married in his twenty-eighth year Liszt's daughter Cosima. For the following nine years von B¼low laboured incessantly in Berlin as pianist, conductor and writer of musical and political articles. Thence he removed to Munich, where, thanks to Wagner, he had been appointed
