John Bull
(c. 1562 - 1628)
Bull was an English organist and composer, renowned for his knowledge of strict counterpoint. He was probably born in Hereford, where he obtained the post of organist at a young age. He quickly advanced to the positions of Gentleman of the Royal Chapel, and then organist of the Royal Chapel, by the age of twenty. In 1610, Bull was named the chief musician of the musical Prince Henry, a highly prestigious position in English music. In 1613, Bull permanently and mysteriously left England to live in Belgium, eventually becoming organist at the Anvers Cathedral. There he would have met his continental colleages, Pieter Cornet and the co-expatriot Peter Philips . Bull was one of the most knowledgeable theoreticians of his day, but his influence on the continent is hard to gauge. It does appear that he relaxed his own style under the influence of the more genial Pieter Cornet. However, these late works still show Bull's flair for counterpoint.

John Bull
(c.15621628)
John Bull, the possessor of the most British-sounding name of all our composers (though he was not the prototype of the legendary figure), was born about 1562. Authorities differ as to the precise date and one goes so far as to state categorically '1563 in Somerset.' Apparently a family named Bull settled near Wellow in the 16th century but there is no direct evidence that the composer did, in fact, belong to it. In the early 1570s he was choirboy at hereford Cathedral. He is listed as having entered Queen Elizabeth's Chapel Royal in 1572 as a choirboy, where he later studied under William Blitheman who, before he came to London, had been Master of the Choristers at Christ Church, Oxford and was himself an important composer. At the end of 1582 or the beginning of 1583 Bull was appointed Master of the Children and, with John Hedges, organist at Hereford, succeeding the organist Thomas Mason . Three years or so later he was sworn in a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, a purely honorary appointment, so it is probable that he continued to spend the greater part of his time in Hereford, where in 1586 a second organist, Thomas Warrock (or Warwick) was appointed. On July 9, 1586, Bull was admitted Bachelor of Music at Oxford and on July 7, 1592, he graduated Doctor of Music having proceeded to the degree at Cambridge in 1589; it may have been to commemorate this event that the well-known portrait of Bull was painted which now hangs in the Library of the Faculty of Music at Oxford. In 1592 he was appointed Organist of the Chapel Royal succeeding

In 1613 he departed for the continent to escape punishment for adultery; he held important organist positions in Brussels and Antwerp until his death. He wrote many verse anthems but is remembered for his keyboard works. In an era of remarkable English music for the virginal (a small harpsichord), he produced works that, with their resourceful keyboard figurations, reflect his own brilliant technique. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "John Bull" from Britannica Concise Arbuthnot, John - Scottish mathematician, physician, and satirist. Papal bull: John Cornwell on a biography of John Paul II.
UNIVERSAL FATHER: A LIFE OF JOHN PAUL II Paul II, John Paul II,
BY GARRY O'CONNOR
NEW YORK: BLOOMSBURY, 436 PAGES. $25.
Karol Wojtyla's first love was the theater. At school he acted in and directed ten plays; his early university courses included studies in Polish drama. After the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, he was a crucial figure in a drama society that met in secret. As Garry O'Connor points out in Universal Father, by the age of twenty Wojtyla had written three plays centered on David, Job, and Jeremiah, "three of the most tested and exposed biblical figures," and "mingled these with Polish warriors and priests." O'Connor is known for his biographies of stage actors and his writings on theater. At first this might seem a strange background for a papal biographer, but O'Connor makes great use of his knowledge of theater, and his book offers an intelligent appreciation of Wojtyla's early orientation.
What is intriguing, however, is O'Connor's view of the future pope's choice of the priesthood as diverging markedly from his earlier life as a dramatist, actor, and director. In Wojtyla, the man of the stage and the man who would become prelate and pope are like two fierce flames conjoined. For this pope was uniquely, and without precedent, a theatrical one: a brilliant manager of public appearances and the media, a master of the minimalist gesture. And therein lies a contradiction: John Paul II's unique ability to project the Christian message was inextricably tied to his tendency to seek and steal the limelight. At first sight, it may seem impossible to do one without the other, but future commentators on his papacy will be disputing the question for decades to come.

Bull's place of birth is shrouded in uncertainty. In an article of 1952, Thurston Dart presumed that Bull's family originated in Somerset , where it is possible the composer was born. It was the 17th century antiquarian Anthony Wood who first proposed that he was related to the Bull family of Peglich, Somerset, but in 1959 Dart wrote that Bull was probably the son of a London goldsmith… . Then, in the second edition of his Calendar of the Life of John Bull Dart proposed Hereford as a third possibility . More recent research by Susi Jeans suggests that Bull was born in the Radnorshire parish of Old Radnor within the diocese of Hereford, although no birth records have yet been discovered. Bull's appointment as organist of Hereford Cathedral in 1582 lends credence to this diocese being his place of birth: it was customary at this time for organists to return to their home cathedrals after training in London (cf: William Byrd and Thomas Morley In he joined the choir at Hereford cathedral, and the next year joined the Children of the

BULL, JOHN BIOGRAPHY
John Bull was among the most distinguished English keyboard-players of his time, and his career forms a link with the developing keyboard tradition of the Netherlands. Bull was in the service of Queen Elizabeth and her successor, before taking refuge in the Netherlands to avoid various charges levelled at him in England. He was known as an organist and a virginalist and as a maker of both instruments, the second a form of keyboard instrument with a mechanism for plucking rather than hammering the strings. Keyboard Music Bull wrote keyboard compositions based on both sacred and secular models. The best known of his works must be The King's Hunt, with a series of dance movements, fantasias and song-variations, some of which make considerable demands on the performer.

John Bull
It may look pretty modest, but the John Bull locomotive is the world's oldest still operable self-propelled vehicle. Much more than that, it is in the ancestral line of piston-driven wheeled vehicles that have been transforming our planet since the 1 9th century. Furthermore, since the John Bull was steam-powered, it was part of the steam revolution that thrust humankind into the industrial age. Late in August 1831, after a six-week voyage from Liverpool, England, the Allegheny docked at a Philadelphia wharf. Lashed aboard were the parts for "one locomotive steam engine" that had been purchased by New Jersey entrepreneur and engineer Robert Stevens. Stevens was building a railroad, one of the first in the United States; he had hired Isaac Dripps as a skilled mechanic. A sloop carried the parts upriver to Bordentown, New Jersey. There, on September 4, young Isaac and his assistants received the crates. None of the men had ever seen a locomotive before, and there were no instructions for its assembly. But Dripps had had some experience with steamboats. Eleven days later, Dripps and his crew had put the engine together on a short length of track. A fire was lit, and steam raised. To everyone's relief, the machine moved, although it would need considerable fine-tuning before it worked properly. In November, Stevens held a party to display the engine to politicians whose support he needed to complete his railroad. Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, Napoleon-Lucien-Charles Murat, attended the festivities, and his wife became the first woman in America to ride aboard a steam-pulled train.

After being organist in Hereford Cathedral, he joined the Chapel Royal in 1585, and in the next year became a Mus. Bac. of Oxford. In 1591 he was appointed organist in Queen Elizabeth I 's chapel in succession to Blitheman, from whom he had received his musical education. In 1592 he received the degree of doctor of music at Cambridge University, and in 1596 he was made music professor at Gresham College, London. As he was unable to lecture in Latin according to the foundation rules of that college, the executors of Sir Thomas Gresham made a dispensation in his favor by permitting him to lecture in English. He gave his first lecture on the 6th of October 1597. In 1601 Bull went abroad. He visited France and Germany, and was everywhere received with the respect due to his talents.
