Preface: Bruckner and Wagner
Comparison is often made of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) and German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) . Is Bruckner "Wagnerian"? Here are some of my observations: The "meaning" of Bruckner's music lies in the symphonic form of purely instrumental music. Bruckner's language is the magnificent and glorious sound of brass, timpani and the songs of the birds expressed so serenely and sadly by the tone of the winds. The musical note itself speaks the language of depth. However, one of the most significant "meanings" of Wagner's music is its narrative (i.e. operas) and symbols (e.g. leitmotifs) of myth (e.g. Der Ring Des Niebelungen often called Ring). Musical leitmotifs connects the musical theme with symbolic concepts, characters and objects (e.g. love, Brunnhilde, gold). Some movements of Bruckner symphonies such as the 7th's adagio recapitulate the theme of his sacred choral work, Te Deum. Thus, some musical themes are symbolically linked to his religious beliefs. However, the core theme of his music exists in the symphonic form and note itself is the essence of Bruckner's music.

"If I knew one tenth of what he knows, I would be happy!" As you see, this is a home page designed for the immortal Bruckner and for all the people who love him. You might know Bach, Beethoven and Mozart well, but you might not be familiar with this name—Anton Bruckner. If that is the case, you must be very lucky because you’ve got a chance to enter the world of this great master. BRUCKNER, ANTON BIOGRAPHY
Bruckner, born near Linz in 1824, is known chiefly as a symphonist. He was trained as a school-teacher and organist, and served in the second capacity in Linz until moving in 1868 to Vienna to teach harmony, counterpoint and organ at the Vienna Conservatory. His success as a composer was varied in his life-time, his acceptance hampered by his own diffidence and his scores posing editorial problems because of his readiness to revise what he had written. He was nine years the senior of Brahms, who outlived him by six months. Bruckner continued Austro-German symphonic traditions on a massive scale, his techniques of composition influenced to some extent by his skill as an organist and consequently in formal improvisation. Austrian Composer and Organist of the Romantic Period

Anton Bruckner spent most of his life quietly composing, but now he's regarded as 19th-century's great symphonic masters.
Anton Bruckner, Austrian composer and organist of the 19th-century's Romantic Era, did not win wide recognition for many years. Now, he is regarded as one of the great symphonic composers of that period. He is famous for his Symphony No.7.
    The Quiet Achiever
As a composer or a person, it's not easy to categorize Anton Bruckner. His life is full of fascinating yet absorbing paradox. Unlike Wagner who greatly influenced him and he admired, Anton Bruckner did not openly promote his pursuits nor did he exhude the Vienna sophistication. Although he moved in Viennese circles, he remained much like an outsider until his death on October 1896. He was cathedral organist at Linz and professor at the Vienna Conservatoire.

13 December 2007 Whilst many would deny the need for a religious faith in order to compose powerful religious works (e.g. does Faure's Requiem really suffer from him being an atheist?), there can be little doubt that Bruckner's strong Catholic faith produced some of the most wonderful music in the 19th century sacred choral repertoire. Polyphony and Stephen Layton have chosen to record his Mass No.2 in E minor , which is sandwiched between seven of the motets including "Ave Maria" and the atmospheric "Os iusti", and the sound they make is simply wonderful. This CD can't come recommended highly enough.
Moving on from the motets, the Mass, with its unusually sparse instrumental scoring and use of wind band rather than conventional orchestra, is beautifully sung and sensitively accompanied by the Britten Sinfonia.

Anton Bruckner was born in Ansfelden to a schoolmaster and organist father with whom he first studied music. He worked for a few years as a teacher's assistant, fiddling at village dances at night to supplement his income. He studied at the Augustinian monastery in St. Florian , becoming an organist there in 1851. He continued his studies to the age of 40, under Simon Sechter and Otto Kitzler , the latter introducing him to the music of Richard Wagner , which Bruckner studied extensively from 1863 onwards. He had alrady in 1861 made acquaintance with Liszt who was religious like Bruckner and who first and foremost was a harmonic innovator, initiating the new german school together with Wagner. Soon after Bruckner had ended his studies under Sechter and Kitzler, he wrote his first mature work, the

Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 5 in B flat major
Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Georg Tintner
    NAXOS 8.5553452
    Playing time: 76:46
There was a time when Anton Bruckner's music was considered unfashionable. Luckily, times change. The Schwann Opus reference guide now lists over two-hundred different recordings of his nine symphonies. In fact, there are twenty-three different versions of the great Fifth Symphony
With this in mind, innovative record company Naxos has chosen veteran conductor Georg Tintner and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra to justify a new complete cycle of the Bruckner symphonies. Georg Tintner is known to me only through his exceptional work with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. His biography suggests experience as a conductor of opera both in Europe and Australia. He has also been Music Director of Symphony Nova Scotia, Canada's maritime orchestra.
The new Naxos recording is a somewhat hit-and-miss affair. Interpretively, Tintner has some interesting things to say. He conveys effectively Bruckner's sense of mystery and awesome power, and allows the orchestra leeway to produce some thrilling sounds. Tintner shapes the angular theme that opens the symphony, with strong, propulsive energy. Happily, this rhythmic quality is sustained through most of the movement. Much of the great Adagio has a lovely elegiac quality, and the Scherzo is incisive, yet rustic in quality. And yet, though the musicians' efforts are well-intentioned, much of the performance does not convince. Consistency and purpose, in some ways, are missing, and the lack of conviction diminishes Bruckner. I felt unmoved.
