His symphonies are often considered emblematic of the final stage of Austro-German Romanticism because of their rich harmonic language, complex polyphony , and considerable length. Bruckner's compositions helped to define contemporary musical radicalism, owing to their dissonances , unprepared modulations , and roving harmonies Unlike other radicals, such as Wagner or Hugo Wolf who fit the enfant terrible mold, Bruckner showed extreme humility before other musicians, Wagner in particular. This apparent dichotomy between Bruckner the man and Bruckner the composer hampers efforts to describe his life in a way that gives a straightforward context for his music. His works, the symphonies in particular, have detractors (especially in English-speaking countries) who point to their large size, their use of repetition, Bruckner's propensity to

Anton Bruckner, a giant of the 19 th The teaching salaries earned by Bruckner were poor and the work itself a distraction from compositional goals. But through his skills as a keyboard player, Bruckner found his way to the assistant organist position at St. Florian, where he stayed for ten years, and organist at Linz Cathedral for thirteen more. The Linz period was vital to his creative life, as he received lessons by mail from Simon Sechter, a Viennese who briefly taught Schubert. Grueling exams and certifications from the Vienna Conservatory would follow, although Bruckner's musical proficiencies were never in doubt. Through the encouragement of friends, Bruckner found work in Vienna as theory teacher at the College of St. Anna and as an instrumentalist. He was also invited to play organ at churches throughout Europe and received wide acclaim. Convinced of his musical future, Bruckner remained in Vienna until his death. His once-peaceful life would become drenched in controversy along the way.

Bruckner’s father was an organist and schoolmaster in a small village in Austria. By the age of four Bruckner was showing musical talent . He played hymn tunes on a tiny violin and then found the chords to go with them on the family spinet . When he was ten he sometimes played the village organ for services . After his father’s death in he became a choirboy at the monastery school of St Florian where, in 1848, he became the organist of the abbey church. He started composing at this time and wrote a Requiem in d minor . He liked the music of Schubert and Mendelssohn and they influenced the way he composed. Background

Anton Bruckner was born in Ansfelden in 1824, son of a village schoolmaster and organist. He showed musical ability at an early age, and entered the Augustinian monastery of St. Florian as a chorister in 1837. In 1840, he went to Linz to train as a teacher, and also learned the organ. In 1845, he found a vacancy in St. Florian and returned as an assistant teacher.
The eternal student
Two years later he became the official organist of St. Florian, and in 1855 he was appointed organist at Linz. By this point, Bruckner had composed many organ and choral works, including his first large-scale work, the Requiem in D minor. In that year, he began harmony and counterpoint lessons with Simon Sechter in Vienna. He finished his studies with Sechter in 1861, but was still unsatisfied with his ability to work with larger-scale forms, and felt his control of orchestration was wanting, so in 1862 he began studies with the Linz cellist and conductor Otto Kitzler.

ANTON BRUCKNER (1824-1896), Austrian musical composer, was born on the 4th of September 1824 at Ansfelden in upper Austria . He successfully competed for the organistship for Linz Cathedral in 1855. In 1867 he succeeded his former master of counterpoint , Sechter, as organist of the Hofkapelle in Vienna , and also became professor in the conservatorium. In 1875 he was appointed to a lectureship in the university. His most striking talent was shown in his extemporizations on the organ. His success in an organ competition at Nancy in 1869 led to his playing in Paris and London (six recitals at the Albert Hall, 1871). His permanent reputation, however, rests on his compositions, especially his nine symphonies. In these gigantic efforts the influence of Wagner is paramount in almost every feature of harmony and orchestration; and if sustained seriousness of purpose and style were all that was necessary to give coherence to works in which these influences are stultified by the rhythmic uniformities of an experienced improvisatore and the impressions of classical form as taught in schools, then Bruckner would certainly have been what the extreme Wagnerian party called him, the symphonic successor of

    About This Person
From All Movie Guide: This late-Romantic composer is at his most individual in his magnificent symphonies. His conception of the symphonic form, greatly misunderstood at first, was entirely different from the Classical and Romantic models: He left behind the prevalent Beethoven sonata-allegro form with its dramatic contrasts, and even though he was at first accused of trying to write Wagnerian symphonies, he abjured the fluid Wagnerian style. Instead, he created large blocks of materials with single harmonies lasting up to 64 measures, introducing sudden breaks when climaxes seemed inevitable, and much more, giving birth to a monumental, almost metaphysical experience.
