BRUCH, MAX BIOGRAPHY
Today Max Bruch is generally known only as the composer of works for the violin. In addition to the Violin Concerto in G minor, the popularity of which continues, and, to the annoyance of the composer, overshadowed much of his other work, we hear from time to time the Scottish Fantasia and the Second Violin Concerto . The fact that, in his day, Bruch was famous for his large-scale choral works, is now forgotten. Between 1870 and 1900 there were numerous performances of works such as Odysseus Frithjof or Das Lied von der Glocke , earning for the composer a reputation that outshone that of Brahms. In view of this it is interesting to hear two of the composers orchestral works that have not remained in general concert repertoire. Max Bruch was born in Cologne on 6th January, 1838, in the same year as Bizet. He studied there with Ferdinand Hiller and Carl Reinecke. Extended journeys at home and abroad as a student were followed by a longer stay in Mannheim, where his opera Loreley was performed in 1863, a work based on a libretto by Geibel and originally dedicated to Mendelssohn, which brought him to the attention of a wider public. Bruchs first official appointments were as Kapellmeister, first in Koblenz (1865-67) and then in Sondershausen (1867-70), followed by a longer stay in Berlin and a period from 1873 to 1878 in Bonn, when he dedicated himself to composition. After a short time as director of the Sternscher Sangverein in Berlin, in 1880 he was appointed conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and he left England in 1883 to become director of the Orchesterverein in Breslau. In 1891 he moved finally to Berlin and took over master classes in composition, Respighi being one of his pupils. He retired in 1911 to devote himself to composition, and died in Berlin on 2nd October, 1920.

Max Bruch, Kol Nidrei
Op. 47, Adagio on Hebrew Melodies for Violoncello and Orchestra . [Listen to a midi This page contains some background information concerning Max Bruch's arrangement of Kol Nidrei. "There is hardly any other traditional Jewish tune that attracted so much attention from the composers of the last century. Innumerable are the arrangements for voice with piano, organ or violin accompaniment and violoncello obligato. We have the exalted melody prepared for choir and small orchestra. And last but not least is the concerto by Max Bruch. In the first bars of Beethoven's C# minor quartet, the opening theme of Kol Nidrei is recognizable. Thus has the music world come to consider this the most characteristic tune of the synagogue." (Idelsohn, The Kol Nidrei Tune, in: HUC Annual, Vol VIII-IX, 1931/2, p.493) Max Bruch himself wrote the following on Kol Nidrei, in a letter to cantor and musicologist Eduard Birnbaum (4 December 1889): "...I became acquainted with Kol Nidre and a few other songs (among others, 'Arabian Camel') in Berlin through the Lichtenstein family, who befriended me. Even though I am a Protestant, as an artist I deeply felt the outstanding beauty of these melodies and therefore I gladly spread them through my arrangement.

Max Bruch was born in Cologne where he studied music. He held various posts as a teacher, conductor and composer and for a few years was conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. The famous Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 26
The critical edition (Urtext) of the First Concerto , produced by Thomas Wood , was published in 1994 by N. Simrock Publishers (London-Hamburg). Simrock's sole agent in the United States is Theodore Presser (Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania). As the authoritative edition of this most important work, this Urtext edition sets straight all previous editions, correcting hundreds of inaccuracies, including added, deleted and changed pitches and rhythms; erroneous accidentals; rewritten passages; missing, misplaced and altered dynamics; expressive indications (e.g., dolce, con forza) which had been altered or deleted altogether; and articulations (e.g., staccato dots an wedges, tenutos, slurs, ties and accents) which were previously omitted, misplaced and sometimes freely redrawn. This Urtext edition, generously supplied with detailed preface and extensive critical notes, is available for violin and piano (with Joachim's original fingerings and a new piano reduction by Wood) as well as for violin and orchestra (Urtext full score with Urtext parts). Orchestral parts of existing editions are particularly inaccurate.
The String Octet , his last work, was composed in January and February 1920 and was completed on March 6 of that year just seven months prior to his death on October 2. According to the inscription (in the composer's hand) on the final page of the autograph MS, the newly completed Octet was itself a reworking of a quintet (now lost) which he had composed in January-March of the previous year. Left by the composer to his heirs and later entrusted by them between 1938 and 1942 to the dubious care of Rudolf Eichmann, the autograph MS of the Octet disappeared until 1986 when

    Max Bruch, 1867.
Violin Concerto No 1 In G Minor, Op. 26 - 1. Vorspiel: Allegro Moderato

Fiery and passionate, Bruch first violin concerto from its premiere in 1868 was a monstrous success both critically and with the public at large. It is notable that Bruch, a pianist, wrote such a masterful work of violinistic expression. While drawing upon techniques utilized by Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto and influenced by the violinist for which the work was dedecated (Joachim), Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 is rather unique and is unusual in several aspects. The first rarity is the nature of the first movement being written as a Vorspiel (prelude) and its direct link to the slower second movement. The opening movement is not without depth and richness though, as the violin of the soloist reigns supreme and dances through the orchestra. The second oddity is the lack of a cadenza either written for the violinist or allowed for the violinist to insert. It is the grand nature and free wheeling spirit of the written violin parts that has made the use of a cadenza decadent and gratuitous.
I recently saw Janine Jensen perform this work with the Philadelphia Orchestra, it was a highly refreshing and energetic perfomance and her recording is recommended with high praise.

    Max Bruch Biography
Max Bruch German composer and conductor . He is particularly well known for one work (out of over 200), his first violin concerto in G minor, though he actually wrote three. This work was and still is one of the most popular Romantic-era violin concertos and uses several new ideas from Felix Mendelssohn 's concerto e.g. linking of movements and doing away with the orchestral exposition and more rigid form that characterises older music. Other pieces, such as his relatively less popular Scottish Fantasy , also for violin and orchestra , are also still played. He also wrote a piece for cello and orchestra which remains quite popular, Kol Nidrei (based on Hebrew melodies, most notably the melody of the Kol Nidre , which gives the piece its name). Violinists Joseph Joachim and Willy Hess advised Bruch on composing for strings, and Hess performed the premières of a number of works by Bruch. The Concert Piece for violin and orchestra, op. 84, was composed for Hess.
