From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Max Christian Friedrich Bruch January 6 October 2 ) also known as Max Karl August Bruch, was a German Romantic composer and conductor who wrote over 200 works, including three violin concertos , one of which is a staple of the violin repertoire. Bruch was born in Cologne Rhine Province , where he received his early musical training under the composer and pianist Ferdinand Hiller , to whom Robert Schumann dedicated his piano concerto. Ignaz Moscheles recognized his aptitude. He had a long career as a teacher, conductor and composer, moving among musical posts in Germany: Mannheim Koblenz Sondershausen Berlin (1870-1872), Bonn, where he spent 1873 -1878 working privately. At the height of his reputation he spent three seasons as conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society (1880-83). He taught composition at the Berlin Hochschule f¼r Musik (the Berlin Conservatoire) from 1890 until his retirement in 1910. His conservatively structured works, in the German romantic musical tradition, placed him in the camp of Romantic classicism exemplified by Johannes Brahms , rather than the opposing "New Music" of Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner . In his time, he was known primarily as a choral composer.

Among the most celebrated of his works are the Kol Nidrei (1881) for cello and orchestra, violin concertos, and many choral pieces. Die Loreley Odysseus (1872), the opera Loreley , and chamber music such as the Septet have allowed a more balanced view of the composer.

Born: Died: Nationality: German Era: Main genre: Main works: Brief biography: Max Bruch is often referred to as a "one-work composer" because his G-minor violin concerto is extremely popular and his other works are seldom played. However, he wrote a great deal of other music in many fields - three operas, 45 choral works, three symphonies, and 15 other works for solo instrument(s) and orchestra. His Kol Nidrei for cello and orchestra, based on the traditional chant associated with that most holy of Jewish holidays, is popular, and George Bernard Shaw considered his "Scottish Fantasy" to be superior to his concertos. - Ted Wilks Music Dictionary Home Composer Alphabetical Listing Composer Chronological Listing Composer Nationality Listing ... Max Bruch
    Biography
His conservatively structured works, in the German romantic musical tradition, placed him in the camp of Romantic classicism exemplified by Johannes Brahms, rather than the opposing "New Music" of Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner. In his time, he was known primarily as a choral composer. His Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26 (1868) is one of the most popular Romantic violin concertos. It uses several techniques from Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor. These include the linking of movements, and a departure from the customary orchestral exposition and rigid form of earlier concertos. It is a singularly melodic composition which many critics have said represents the apex of the romantic tradition. Other pieces which are also well-known and widely played include the Scottish Fantasy for violin and orchestra which includes an arrangement of the tune "Hey Tuttie Tatie", best known for its use of the song Scots Wha Hae by Robert Burns. Bruch also wrote Kol Nidrei, Op. 47, a popular work for cello and orchestra (its subtitle is "Adagio on Hebrew Melodies for Violoncello and Orchestra"). This piece was based on Hebrew melodies, principally the melody of the Kol Nidre prayer, which gives the piece its name. The success of this work has made many assume that Bruch himself had Jewish ancestry, but there is no evidence for this.

    Biography
While the music of Max Bruch generally strikes listeners as beautiful, imaginative, and high-minded, critics have tended to relegate him to the status of a minor master. Bruch started composing as a child, displaying an extraordinary musical talent which was recognized as such by Ignaz Moscheles . In 1852, he wrote a symphony and a string quartet, the latter work bringing him a scholarship from the Frankfurt-based Mozart foundation, which enabled him to study with Ferdinand Breunung, Ferdinand Hiller , and Carl Reinecke That autumn, Bruch took up an appointment as professor of composition at the Berlin Hochschule f¼r Musik, working there until his retirement in 1910 and retaining his rank as a professor there until his death in 1920. During his lifetime he had a reputation as destined to become one of music's great composers. Bruch's best-known work is without doubt his passionately romantic Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor (1868), a major item in the standard violin repertoire. His next most often played work is the single-movement work for cello and orchestra, Kol Nidrei. This lovely composition is representative of his interest in setting melodic material originating from other ethnic groups; he wrote works on Russian, Swedish, Scottish, and Celtic melodies as well. These other works, and his symphonies, have not worn well and are rarities, sometimes revived in the concert hall and on records and on those occasions usually favorably surprising the audience for their beauty and fine workmanship. ~ Joseph Stevenson, All Music Guide
