Benjamin Britten is born at Lowestoft, 22 November 1913, and died at Aldeburgh, 4 December 1976. He studied with Frank Bridge as a boy and in 1930 entered the RCM. In 1934 he heard Wozzeck and planned to study with Berg , but opposition at home stopped him. The next year he began working for the GPO Film Unit, where one of his collaborators was Auden: together they worked on concert works as well, Auden's social criticism being matched by a sharply satirical and virtuoso musical style (orchestral song cycle Our Hunting Fathers 1936). Stravinsky and Mahler were important influences, but Britten's effortless technique gave his early music a high personal definition, notably shown in orchestral works (Bridge Variations for strings, 1937; Piano Concerto, 1938; Violin Concerto, 1939) and songs (Les illuminations, setting Rimbaud for high voice and strings, 1939). In 1939 he left England for the USA, with his lifelong companion Peter Pears; there he wrote his first opera, to Auden's libretto (Paul Bunyan, 1941). In 1942 he returned and, partly stimulated by

The Colorado Britten Society was formed December 4, 2001, upon the 25th anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten, in an effort to further an appreciation of the music of this extraordinary English composer. Our Mission:

~ to promote live performances of Britten's music
~ to encourage scholarly research of Britten's life and works through lectures and symposia
~ to develop educational outreach programs to bring Britten's music to a wider audience
~ to cultivate an appreciation of Britten's music throughout Colorado and beyond Composing is like driving down a foggy road toward a house. Slowly you see more details of the house-the color of the slates and bricks, the shape of the windows. The notes are the bricks and the mortar of the house. -Benjamin Britten

Australian poet and author Peter Nicholson writes 3QD’s Poetry and Culture column (see other columns here ). There is an introduction to his work at peternicholson.com.au and at the NLA Benjamin Britten: Music and poetry, attendant muses at the grinding gears Leonard Bernstein once said of Benjamin Britten that his music was ‘dark, there are gears grinding and not quite meshing . . . making great pain’. That seems true. Certainly, there is no transcendence in Britten, as there is in Elgar, for example. The Dream of Gerontius is a work of faith and Christian journeying, but Britten was having none of Cardinal Newman’s agenda. Nor is there that charged explosion of sensuality Elgar achieved with In The South , though the composer does let his hair down occasionally, as in the Four Cabaret Songs or the finale of Spring Symphony . Even Elgar’s melancholy seems schooled in hopefulness by comparison with Britten. Britten is simply dark, and anxiety is close to the surface. Neither could Britten luxuriate, as Delius does, or glitter with delight, like Walton. But what Britten does have, something those other composers do not have to same degree, is the most exquisite ear for poetry and the ability to set is superbly. To a very real degree, it is poetry that gets Britten through his dark nights of the soul. Britten was lucky that one of his earliest friendships was with Auden, and, naturally enough, being with a poet of this stature couldn’t help but rub off on a sensitive and intelligent personality like Britten’s. There are many early settings of Auden

It's been 25 years since the death of Benjamin Britten he died in December, 1976 and although no one's announced plans for any formal retrospective, particularly books or recordings, we felt this to be a good time to take a look at this remarkable composer and focus on several important aspects of his multi-layered and enduring legacy. The following article focuses on a particular and very significant recurring theme in Britten's music, followed by a selected discography; later in the year, we will offer more specific surveys of available recordings, with commentary and recommendations by Classicstoday.com's critics. Benjamin Britten Variations on a Theme of Innocence Lost "What is an English public schoolboy doing writing music of this kind?" Indeed, from where did 16-year-old Benjamin Britten acquire such creative ideas and technical facility as to prompt this remark from the distinguished scholarship committee at London's Royal College of Music? It was May, 1930, and Britten, who already had made up his mind to make his living as a composer "I know it can be done" took a long shot and submitted his name to the RCM in hopes of a scholarship to study music there. After the exam, he was immediately informed that he'd won. "A splendid piece of news!" wrote Britten's fatherly mentor, Frank Bridge, with whom he'd been taking occasional composition lessons for two years. This splendid piece of news was the launching pad from which a "public schoolboy" from a provincial seaside town in East Anglia was to become the greatest composer of the 20th century. Up to that time, Britten's sheer enthusiasm for writing music produced reams of manuscript pages, full of grand ideas and overflowing with promise. Frank Bridge was to Britten as George Martin was to the Beatles Britten's creative course would have been infinitely and unimaginably different had his first teacher been from the ranks of the "old school" rather than the slightly eccentric but forward-thinking Bridge, who was immediately impressed with Britten at their first meeting, when Britten was only 14.

More than 1,000 locals hate the Scallop, the controversial, 12ft high, steel artwork created by artist Maggi Hambling, which has bitterly divided the town since it was erected four years ago."
