Bridge was born in Brighton and studied at the Royal College of Music in London from 1899 to 1903 under Charles Villiers Stanford and others. He played the viola in a number of string quartets , most notably the English String Quartet , and conducted , sometimes deputising for Henry Wood , before devoting himself to composition, receiving the patronage of Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge . He privately tutored a number of pupils, most famously Benjamin Britten , who later championed his teacher's music and paid homage to him in the Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge (1937), based on a theme from the second of Bridge's Three Idylls for String Quartet (1906). Among Bridge's works are the orchestral The Sea Oration (1930) for cello and orchestra and the opera The Christmas Rose (premiered 1932), but he is perhaps most highly regarded today for his chamber music . His early works are in a late- Romantic idiom, but later pieces such as the third (1926) and fourth (1937) string quartets are harmonically advanced and very distinctive, showing the influence of the

Frank Bridge, underappreciated, underplayed, and still little known even in his native England, is most frequently recognized today as the teacher of the young Benjamin Britten, who acknowledged his teacher's influence in a popular early work. Bridge's sizable musical catalog is devoted primarily to chamber music and songs; he wrote orchestral music but composed no symphonies and only one work he called a concerto, Oration , Concerto Elegiaco for Cello and Orchestra. Born in Brighton in 1879, Frank Bridge was the tenth of twelve children of William Henry Bridge, a violin teacher and music hall conductor, and the first child of his third marriage. Frank began violin lessons with his father and by age eleven had started to compose, play in his father's orchestra, sometimes substituting on other instruments, and occasionally to arrange and conduct. In 1896 he entered the Royal College of Music as a violin and piano student and after winning the Foundation Scholarship became a composition student of Charles Villiers Stanford . His first surviving composition is dated 1900. After switching to the viola he continued performing, especially in string quartets and he conducted frequently, often called upon to fill in at short notice for ailing conductors. A shy, retiring man who never accepted a regular conducting post, he supplemented slumping post-war income by teaching violin both to private pupils and in schools.

Born in Sussex, Bridge as a boy learned to play violin from his father, and had much early exposure to practical musicianship, playing in theatre orchestras his father conducted, arranging and also conducting occasionally. At 17, he entered the Royal College of Music, where he studied violin and composition. He later played viola in prominent quartets and was a respected conductor. His earlier works, though colored by the prevailing Brahms-Stanford style of the times, plainly have their own distinct character. After the war years 1914-18, Bridge's style grew in new directions. Audiences meanwhile were inclined to associate Bridge with earlier works like

BRIDGE, FRANK BIOGRAPHY
The work of the English composer and viola-player Frank Bridge is now beginning to enjoy some favour, not least through the fact that he was the teacher of Benjamin Britten, one of whose earlier works is based on a composition by Bridge. Orchestral Music Bridge's orchestral works bring useful additions to the string orchestra repertoire. These include his Lament of 1915, an earlier Suite and a Christmas dance, Sir Roger de Coverley, and versions of Sally in Our Alley and Cherry Ripe, originally designed for string quartet.

Bridge's music - beautifully crafted and full of haunting imagination - was much played in the earlier part of his career, during which time he was himself a fine chamber music player and conductor. His later music, particularly such works as the Piano Sonata, Violin Sonata and the Third and Fourth String Quartets, adopted a more radical style to which the general musical public could much less easily respond. For some 30 years after his death his major works were little played, but since the early 1970s interest has been growing steadily. Benjamin Britten, who owed much to Bridge's teaching, drew attention to his master's music and performed it whenever he could. The Sea Summer Two Poems and, later, Phantasm and There is a willow grows aslant a brook . They also published all his important piano music, his only choral work of any size, A Prayer and his one opera

THE FRANK BRIDGE BEQUEST The music of Frank Bridge (1879-1941) was widely played in his younger days but suffered increasing neglect in the 1930s and for 30 years after his death. Since the 1970s there has been a steady re-awakening of interest not least as a result of the advocacy of Benjamin Britten (Bridge's pupil), such enthusiasts as Anthony Payne and

Died: January 10, 1941 - Eastbourne, England The distinguished English composer, Frank Bridge, was a younger child in a large family. He first learned to play the violin from his father, and enjoyed the benefit of early exposure to practical musicianship as a player in music-hall orchestras which his father conducted. In 1896 at age 17 he entered the Royal College of Music, where he studied violin and piano for three years. Following this, he received a scholarship to study composition for another four years under Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. On graduating in 1903, he was awarded the gold Tagore medal reserved for the 'most generally deserving pupil' and received the highest praise from respected composer and teacher at the RCM, Sir Hubert Parry.

The same year, he formed a friendship with German-born businessman Edward Speyer - a relationship lasting to Speyer's death in 1934. In his memoirs, Speyer gives fond testimony to Bridge's role in the many delightful musical weekends enjoyed at his Hertfordshire home.
B Frank ridge's future wife, Ethel Sinclair, was a fellow student at the RCM. In late 1907 she returned from her native Australia to England where she and Frank were married in September 1908, and established themselves in Chiswick. In midwinter 1909-10, Bridge composed his famous Suite for Strings over a few short weeks.
