Composer of the Month - July, 2005 Johannes Brahms, 1833-1897

by Daryl Lee Born in 1833 to a double-bassist for the Hamburg opera, Johannes Brahms began his music studies at the age of seven, beginning with piano and adding theory and composition beginning at thirteen. While on a concert tour, he met Franz Liszt and Joseph Joachim, who then introduced him to Robert Schumann, starting a relationship that would last him the rest of his life. Schumann saw promise in Brahms, to the extent of touting him as "the next Beethoven." Schumann died three years later, but Brahms' friendship with Schumann's wife Clara lasted until Clara's death 40 years later in 1896. Schumann's confidence in Brahms became manifest in Brahms' perfectionism—Brahms kept a bust of Beethoven in his studio as a reminder, and is known to have destroyed his drafts of pieces that did not meet his own expectations. His full-time composing career began with his move to Vienna in 1862. He was soon appointed director of the Vienna Singakademie, with a concentration on

Johannes Brahms
Often nicknamed "Mr. Establishment," Johannes Brahms opposed the new cutting edge composers of the Romantic Era. He was a very civilized, normal man, very different from the childish attitudes of Mozart , and the stormy personality of Beethoven . Considered the "conservative" of the Romantic Era, some of Brahms' works are so individual that they are considered "impossible" to play, to match what he was trying to say with his music. Born in Hamburg, Germany, Brahms' father, an all-around very good musician himself, taught the young Johannes how to play dance music on the violin, cello, and horn and how to arrange music for brass bands. The young man helped his family out of financial nightmares by making arrangements of popular waltzes for a music publisher. Hungarian Dances Johannes Brahms' talent was very apparent from the start, attracting many great legends to tutor him in the world of composition. Probably the most important encounter for Brahms would be that with Robert Schumann. With Schumann, Brahms also met the virtuoso pianist, Clara Schumann, Robert's wife. From the day he met her, Brahms fell in love with her, and was perhaps Johannes' only love. His love for her lasted until the day she died (which was only a year before he Brahms himself died), and never did Johannes show her his love, held back by his friendship with Robert Schumann. Aside from his love life, Brahms also held back on something else: the will to change. It is rumored that Brahms even signed a manifesto against "new music." The way young composers of his time seeked to develop a piece of music that would mark the "new era" disgusted Brahms in every way. Because of this discretion, Brahms created a notorious rivalry with the operatic great, Richard Wagner. However, a rivalry was something Brahms did not seek for. In fact, Brahms actually admired Wagner's works. It was mostly Wagner who developed the rivalry. It all began when Brahms' critics commented on his first symphony. It was such a piece of magnificence that the critics named it "Beethoven's Tenth Symphony." To Wagner, it brought a tremendous amount of jealousy, since Wagner saw himself as Beethoven's heir.

Assignment Choices:
- What might Brahms say to Clara to first open up the subject of his love for her?
- Does Brahms propose marriage or is it he who never asks, rather than she who refuses?
2. Write the lyrics for a song Brahms might have written for Clara. Keep in mind that words for songs during this time period usually rhymed. 3. If you play an instrument, create an original short piece that Brahms might have written for Clara. Consider the emotions of love and how they might be conveyed through the music. Would the tempo be slow and the tone sad because love is unrequited, or might the tempo be fast and furious to show the frustration of two souls that never connect?

Johaness Brahms (1833-1897) To some people, Brahms has been seen as something of an enigma in the course of music development. The Romantic movement was well underway in the first half of the 19th century, set in early motion by Beethoven and then kindled by Mendelssohn , Berlioz and Schumann , before being transformed by Liszt , Verdi and Wagner . It seemed like all composers of the day, despite differences in style and scale, were united in seeking a new freer means of expression. Brahms however chose the stricter conventions of the classical period , and as a result received much criticism from his more adventurous peers and later composers. Yet Brahms demonstrated time and again that it wasn't necessary to abandon the old forms in forwarding the ideals of Romanticism Compared to many musicians and composers, Brahms was a late developer. Brahms' early music career was as a pianist giving recitals in his late teens and 20s, and his exceptionl skills on this instrument brought him attention from the violinist Joachim, and Robert and Clara Schumann who were to befriend him. It was not until he reached his 30s that he began to compose with any regularity, and his first Symphony was complete in 1876 at the age of 43. Part of this reticence was the enormous historical figure of Beethoven in whose musical footsteps Brahms was to follow, and indeed his music was compared to Beethoven to the extent that the first Symphony was dubbed "Beethoven's 10th". Having put those first tentative steps behind him, Brahms went on to compose many great works in the remaining 2 decades of his life. His legacy is the melding of form and content, of powerful expression yet great economy.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Johannes Brahms was born near Hamburg. As a son of a musician, he obtained a good musical education. Brahms was traveling through Europe and gave concerts performing his own music. Later, he became the manager of the Vienna Singers' Academy in 1862 and in 1868. Vienna became his second home.
From 1872 to 1875 he conducted the "Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien". Although Brahms was employed a lot of times, he rather praised the life of a free musician, like most of the composers at this time. His work includes 4 Symphonies, 2 Serenades, vocal pieces with orchestra and a wide selection of chamber music.

Brahms, Johannes Born: Hamburg, 7 May 1833
Died: Vienna, 3 April 1897
Nationality: German composer
Fundamentally reserved, logical and studious, Brahms was fond of taut forms in his music, though he used genre distinctions loosely. In the piano music, for example, which chronologically encircles his vocal output, the dividing lines beteen ballade and rhapsody, and capriccio and intermezzo, are vague; such terms refer more to expressive character than to musical form. As in other media, his most important development technique in the piano music is variation, whether used independently (simple melodic alteration and thematic cross-reference) or to create a large integrated cycle in which successive variations contain their own thematic transformation (as in the Handel Variations). Brahms' greatest vocal work, and a work central to his career, is the "German Requiem" (1868), combining mixed chorus, solo voices and full orchestra in a deeply felt, non-denominational statement of faith. More Romantic are the "Schicksalslied" and the Alto Rhapsody. Between these large choral works and the many a cappella ones showing his informed appreciation of Renaissance and Baroque polyphony (he was a diligent collector, scholar and editor of old music) stand the justly popular "Zigeunerlieder" (in modified gypsy style) and the ländler-like "Liebeslieder" waltzes with piano accompaniment. His best-loved songs include, besides the narrative "Magelone" cycle and the sublime "Vier ernste Gesänge," "Mainacht," "Feldeinsamkeit" and "Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer."

Johannes Brahms: brief biography
Johannes Brahms acquired his fame as a symphonic composer, yet he only wrote four. He was in love with another man's wife. These and other secrets about this great man are revealed through the lesser known facts of history.
Today Johannes Brahms is best remembered for the symphonies he composed, but did you know that in his lifetime, his most famous pieces were German folk songs? Did you know that the great composer of the Romantic Period was quite the romantic himself, falling in love with his best friend's wife? Did you know that historians draw a direct link between Brahms' death and the death of the woman he loved? These are the lesser known facts about the well known musician. Johannes Brahms was born into a musical family. His father was the bass player in the Hamburg Theater. The German family prided itself on its happy atmosphere at home and Johannes Brahms often spoke of his beloved childhood. Though much of the composer's work is grandiose in nature and style, some of it is lighthearted and even humorous. Brahms attributed the lighter side of his music to his youthful beginnings. Brahms' father taught him violin and cello but he longed to know more. His father's friends, many of them the musicians at the Hamburg Theater, were willing to teach the boy other instruments and composition. Brahms' favorite instrument was the piano. Many of his compositions were for trios and quartets of stringed instruments, or stringed instruments with piano.
