      Johannes Brahms
      Born: Hamburg, May 7, 1833
      Died: Vienna, April 3, 1897
Born to a poor family in the slums of Hamburg, Germany, Brahms studied music as best he was able while supporting himself by playing piano at bars and brothels and by turning out arrangements of light music. His early compositions continued in the progressive direction of the waning romanticism: huge sonatas piano trios , and other works like the Piano Quartet in G minor , for the finale of which Brahms utilizes a flashy gypsy melody. But Brahms later abandoned this track, devoting himself instead to synthesizing the Classical forms with the almost by now forgotten early Romanticism , with its slowly unraveling sense of tonality. In so doing, Brahms created a repertoire of works that amounts to a glowing and majestic apotheosis of the musical traditions of the nineteenth-century.

    Introduction
Print this section Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), German composer, one of the major composers of the 19th century, whose works combine the best of the classical and romantic schools. Brahms was born in Hamburg on May 7, 1833. After studying the violin and cello with his father, a double bass player in the city theater, Brahms mastered the piano and began to compose under the guidance of the German music teacher Eduard Marxsen, whose conservative tastes left a lasting imprint on him. In 1853 Brahms went on a concert tour as accompanist to the Hungarian violinist Eduard Rem©nyi. In the course of the tour he met the Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim, who introduced him in turn to the German composer Robert Schumann. Schumann was so impressed by Brahms's unpublished compositions that he wrote a wildly enthusiastic magazine article about him. Brahms cherished a deep affection for both Schumann and his wife Clara, a famous pianist. The friendship and encouragement he received from them gave impetus to his work. Many biographers contend that Brahms was deeply in love with Clara, but he did not propose to her after Schumann's death in 1856, and he never married.

Brahms was born in Hamburg to the son of a double-bass player and his older seamstress wife. The violinist Joseph Joachim introduced him to many leading musicians of the day including Schumann who hailed him as a genius. He moved to Vienna in 1863 where he earned his living as a conductor and teacher. Brahms was one of the greatest 19th century symphonists after Beethoven and he was regarded as the foremost romantic composer of instrumental music in classical forms. He contributed masterpieces to almost every genre. His music was the object of bitter attacks by the followers of Wagner and Liszt Brahms was a gruff humorous man tolerated by those who valued his genius. He never married and never left Europe. Johannes Brahms Works Brahms wrote four symphonies, massive in structure, and all the result of long periods of work and revision. MIDI FILE - from 3rd Symphony: 4th mov. The two early Serenades have their own particular charm, while the Variations on a Theme by Haydn enjoy enormous popularity, examples of a form in which Brahms had complete mastery.

Self Confidence or Modesty Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897)
    G Early Works
    I Major Works
U ntil 1873 Brahms had written chiefly for the piano, the instrument he knew best, and for chorus and orchestra. In that year, however, he produced the Variations on a Theme by Haydn, scored for full orchestra. Demonstrating Brahms's increasing mastery of large orchestral form, the Variations presaged his major works, which are among the finest expressions in all music literature. His masterpieces include the grandiloquent Symphony no. 1 in C Minor (1876); the gentler, more mellifluous Symphony no. 2 in D Major (1877); the Academic Festival Overture (1880), incorporating German student songs; the somber Tragic Overture (1881); the poetic Symphony no. 3 in F Major (1883); and the Symphony no. 4 in E Minor (1885), with its brilliant and emotionally overwhelming finale.
All these works display a tightly knit structure, stemming from the Viennese classical tradition. Unlike his contemporaries, Brahms shunned exploitation of new harmonic effects and new tone colors for their own sake. He concerned himself rather with creating music of inherent unity, utilizing new or unusual effects only to enhance internal structural nuances. Thus, his best works contain no extraneous passages; each theme, each figure, each modulation is implicit in all that has preceded it. The classicism of Brahms was a unique phenomenon in its day, entirely at odds with the trends in contemporary music as represented especially by the German composer Richard Wagner. Although Brahms revived a tradition to which no important composer since Ludwig van Beethoven had adhered, he was not wholly isolated from his own milieu, and the fiery emotional range of the romantic spirit permeates his music.

    Life
Brahms was born in Hamburg . His father, who gave him his first music lessons, was a double bassist . Brahms showed early promise on the piano and helped to supplement the rather meager family income by playing the piano in restaurants and theaters, as well as by teaching. Although it is a widely-told tale that Brahms had to play the piano in bars and brothels, recent research, for example that by Kurt Hoffman (1), suggest that this is probably false. For a time, he also learned the violoncello , although his progress was cut short when his teacher absconded with Brahms's instrument.

His later activities as pianist and as choral conductor were not very successful, but after he settled in Vienna his compositions brought him enough money to support himself in simple comfort. Brahms never married, although he had several love affairs and remained deeply attached to Clara Schumann for years after her husband's death. In his music the romantic impulse is restrained by a reverence for the forms of the past. This blend of romantic feeling and classical spirit is exemplified in such works as his
