      BOYCE, William 1711-1779.
London: Printed and Sold for the Author, by J. Walsh, 1743. First Edition. BUC p. 129. RISM B4074. "It was through 'Solomon' that Boyce achieved his first notable success as a composer in the early 1740s... Though outwardly a cantata-like work for two vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra with a text based on the biblical 'Song of Solomon', it was one of the few English works to be designated from the outset by the Italian term 'serenata'. The librettist, Edward Moore, was resident in Ireland during its composition, and he may well have envisaged a first performance there; however, it was first heard at the Apollo Academy in autumn 1742... John Walsh's publication of 'Solomon' on behalf of the composer early in 1743 was enthusiastically received. Unusually for a work of its kind, it was issued complete and in full score, thus facilitating the first public performances at Ruckhold House, Essex, in summer 1743 and later that year in London." Blackstock Cemetery is located off Hwy 21 barely in Fort Mill Township nest to the NC boundary line. It is named for William Blackstock, the first minister of Steele Creek Associate Reform Presbyterian Church. The cemetery dates back to 1793, the same year the church was established. The church split in 1803 but merged back together in 1844. However there were two seperate locations for the churches which were referred to as Little Steele Creek ARP and Lower Steele Creek ARP. In 1883 the two built Central Steele Creek ARP in a central location. In 1917 the church ceased being ARP and became Presbyterian. The following list of surviving tombstones of Blackstock Cemetery was compiled by Linda Lawless Blackwelder for her book, A History of Central Creek Presbyterian Church, and is reprinted with her permission. Boyce was a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral and a pupil of Maurice Greene, whom he succeeded as Master of the King's Musick in 1755. Meanwhile he held various organ posts in London, was appointed composer to the Chapel Royal in 1736, and conductor of the Three Choirs Festival the following year. From 1758 he was organist of the Chapel Royal. Deafness forced him to give up much of his work during his later years. Although his dance movements and fugues show much individuality, based on an idiom bequeathed by Handel, his numerous court odes are more easily forgotten. In recent years his music has been revived.

William Boyce is among the most important English composers of the late Baroque period, 25 years younger than Handel, whom he outlived by twenty years. He was a rival of Arne and in 1757 became Master of the King's Music. His works include a variety of music for both church and theatre. Instrumental Music Boyce's instrumental music includes a set of Eight Symphonies in eight parts, published in 1760, compositions that reflect the changing tastes of the time. His set of Twelve Trio Sonatas followed a fashion that had started with Corelli in the previous century and was now coming to an end. Vocal and Choral Music One of Boyce's best known songs is the patriotic Heart of Oak. His church music still retains a place in Anglican cathedral repertoire, strengthened by the appearance of his collected Cathedral Music.

Born in London, he was Master of the King's Music and composer and organist of the Chapel Royal. Increasing deafness compelled Boyce to give up most of his work after 1769. His 3-volume Cathedral Music (1760-1778), a collection of church music from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries by English composers such as William Byrd Henry Purcell , and Thomas Tallis , was used in cathedrals in England for more than a century. His anthems include O, Where Shall Wisdom be Found and By the Waters of Babylon.
