Lone Scout: W. D. Boyce and American Boy Scouting
is the biography of a Progressive-era Chicago businessman and world- wide explorer. Paralleling Theodore Roosevelt in many activities, during his lifetime Boyce (1858-1929) attained international prominence -"a man with friends in almost every civilized country." His sustaining legacy, also a reflection of Roosevelt's interests and concern for children, was bringing the concept of Boy Scouting to the United States and combining it with youth programs established by the YMCA and other organizations. This is the first authoritative biography of William D. Boyce, founder in 1910 of the Boy Scouts of America.
Born to a Pennsylvania farm family, Boyce's monetary successes were as a Chicago newspaper publisher. Between 1887 and the early 1930s, his periodicals were read by millions of subscribers in rural and small-town America.
A lifelong adventurer, Boyce made extensive trips to all parts of the world. During World War One, he traveled to Europe on the British luxury liner

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Boyce, William Boyce, William (1710-1779), was an English composer and organist. He is chiefly remembered for his patriotic song "Hearts of Oak" (1759), which was written for the pantomime Harlequin's Invasion. But his major contributions to music were his compositions for church services and his many anthems. Boyce's nonreligious compositions include numerous odes, masques, incidental music for plays, and such instrumental compositions as sonatas, symphonies, and concertos. Boyce compiled Cathedral Music (1760), an important collection of British church music of the 1500's and 1600's.

B ... Z WILLIAM BOYCE (1711-1779) William Boyce was born in 1711 in Maiden Lane in the City of London. William was the son John Boyce, a cabinet maker, and his wife Elizabeth. They had moved to Maiden Lane in the first half of 1711 shortly before William's birth. In February 1722 William Boyce's father was appointed Beadle to the Joiners' Company. The post carried with it accommodation for the Beadle's family in the Joiners' Hall. At the age of twelve William began his musical education when he became a chorister of St. Paul's Cathedral under the musical direction of Charles King. When William's voice broke he was accepted as a pupil to the composer Maurice Greene who was the Cathedral organist. At the age of 24 Boyce took up his first musical post as organist at Oxford Chapel, Vere Street, Cavendish Square, London. He was taught at this time by the German born composer John Pepusch who gave him his great love for church music of the past. Boyce taught the harpsichord at various nearby schools. About this time his hearing became gradually impaired. A tragedy that did not lessen his love for his musical studies. On 1736 he became composer to the Chapel Royal. In this post he composed some of his greatest anthems and church music. This was also the year in which Boyce composed the oratorio, David's Lamentation over Saul and Jonathan with words written by his friend John Lockman.

BECKE, GEORGE LEWIS (1855-1913), known as Louis Becke,
short-story writer and novelist, was born at Port Macquarie, New South Wales, where his father was clerk of petty sessions, on 18 June 1855 ( Aust. Ency .). He was the youngest of six children and soon showed a disposition to wander. He has stated that before he was 10 he had twice run away from home. The family removed to Sydney and Becke was educated at the Fort-street school. He began his voyages in the south seas at a very early age and there are two accounts of these beginnings: one by the Earl of Pembroke, who presumably obtained his information from Becke, which is prefixed to By Reef and Palm , and the other written by Becke and printed in the Red Page of the Bulletin on 27 February 1913. It is difficult to reconcile them, and all that is certain is that Becke spent many years on vessels trading in the Pacific islands. In 1874 he was in Australia on the Palmer River goldfields, and later on unsuccessfully tried to settle down as a bank clerk. He returned to the south seas as a supercargo and trader, and during the middle seventies voyaged with the notorious "Bully" Hayes. The accounts of Becke's connexion with Hayes given in
