English composer and organist. He began as a choirboy at St. Paul's Cathedral; later he studied organ and harmony with Maurice Greene , the cathedral organist. His first position was as organist at the Earl of Oxford's chapel in London; he served there until 1736, when he was appointed both composer to the Chapel Royal and organist at St. Michael's, Comhill. From 1737 he conducted the Music Meeting. Probably during the late 1730s he composed his first stage work, the masque Peleus and Thetis. In 1747 his trio sonatas op. 1 were greeted with wide public acclaim, and in 1749 he received the Bachelor and Doctor of Music degrees from Oxford. Two years after Greene's death in 1755 Boyce was appointed Master of the King's Music in his place; in 1758 he was also named one of the organists of the Chapel Royal. As a result of growing deafness, in 1764 he was dismissed from his duties at All Hallow's Church, and he resigned from St. Michael's in 1768. He spent his last years compiling the 3-volume Cathedral Music (publ. 1760, 1768, and 1773), an important collection of music by Purcell Gibbons Blow , and others. Boyce composed seventeen stage works (most for Drury Lane Theatre); other vocal works, including services, anthems, and odes; instrumental music, including eight symphonies op. 2 (London, 1760), twelve overtures (London, 1770), and the Concerto in D minor (Worcester Overture).

The serenata Solomon (1743) is among the best of his compositions for the theatre; it contains the once-popular tenor scena Softly Rise, O Southern Breeze. His next published work was Twelve Sonatas for Two Violins, with a Bass for the Violoncello or Harpsichord (1747), which achieved an instant and lasting popularity. In the same year, he wrote the music for The Chaplet Secular Masque , with music by Boyce, including the Song of Momus to Mars.

A small tribute to an underestimated composer
Already as a little child I was enchanted by the symphonies of William Boyce, played by the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Jörg Faerber (Turnabout vox, TV 34133s).
Constant Lambert, a musician and author has contributed to the popularity of the eight symphonies by publishing an edition (1928). He adapted the scores for a modern orchestra but omitted some historical features, like the timpani in symphonie no.5.
In publications on music history in general, the English composer William Boyce is sometimes briefly mentioned among great Baroque composers like Händel and Bach. You can argue about the fact that Boyce is a true Baroque composer or not; he was born 25 years after Bach and Händel. However, in the time Boyce composed his most known works, composers were expected to write in the Baroque style.
His Eight Symphonies are constructed in a relatively simple manner, generally having three movements, one of which might be in the relative minor key. Most of the movements have conservative forms, binary, or occasionally extended binary forms.

BOYCE, WILLIAM BIOGRAPHY
William Boyce is among the most important English composers of the late Baroque period, 25 years younger than Handel, whom he outlived by twenty years. He was a rival of Arne and in 1757 became Master of the King's Music. His works include a variety of music for both church and theatre. Instrumental Music Boyce's instrumental music includes a set of Eight Symphonies in eight parts, published in 1760, compositions that reflect the changing tastes of the time. His set of Twelve Trio Sonatas followed a fashion that had started with Corelli in the previous century and was now coming to an end. Vocal and Choral Music One of Boyce's best known songs is the patriotic Heart of Oak. His church music still retains a place in Anglican cathedral repertoire, strengthened by the appearance of his collected Cathedral Music.

17. William Boyce
Brief biography from Guild Music notes his compositional and musicological accomplishments.
http://www.guildmusic.com/composer/boycew.htm
William Boyce
William Boyce was an outstanding musical figure in his day: organist, conductor, composer of sacred and secular music, scholar and publisher. For many years his three-volume Cathedral Music was the principal published source of anthems and services of his time and earlier. These three volumes helped preserve the continuous tradition of Cathedral music by making older music available for performance. Boyce's association with St. Paul's began when he was a chorister and subsequently an articled pupil of the organist, Maurice Greene. He succeeded Greene in 1735 as conductor of the annual Festival of the Sons of the Clergy at St. Paul's - he wrote at least two anthems for choir and orchestra for this festival - and as Master of the King's Musick. When he died in 1779 he was buried under the dome of the Cathedral, and the combined choirs of the Chapel Royal, Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral sang at his funeral.

Life Summary ... Article History In 1846 Boyce went to Sydney as general superintendent for establishing the 'missions in Australia, Van Diemen's Land, the Friendly Islands and Feejee' as an Australian Conference. He presided at the Wesleyan District Meeting in York Street Chapel on 30 July 1846; among those present who recorded that 'the highest expectations were cherished as the result of his presence', were John McKenny William Schofield and D. J. Draper . His conciliatory guidance overcame much of the resentment felt by Wesleyan missionaries over their local status and difficulties caused by the remote control and paternalism of the British Conference. In August 1847 he edited and published the weekly Gleaner . An omnivorous reader with wide culture, he sought 'to open the doors of learning by the circulation of good literature'. As a theologian he defined the position of Methodism as a Church, and as an administrator acquired building sites, 'properly securing those already obtained'. He was also responsible for recruiting several new ministers to serve new Wesleyan centres in the colonies.
