No Comments Sept 16, 1887.  French composition teacher of many prominent composers, Nadia Boulanger , was born today.  Her younger sister was the composer Lili Boulanger. Nadia boulanger, a Tribute by Tel Asiado (c) Nadia (Juliette) Boulanger (1887-1979), French composer, conductor and teacher, was one of twentieth century’s most influential figures in music. Although she achieved acclaim as a composer and was the first prominent woman conductor of major orchestras, it was her role as a music teacher that earned her the most lasting distinction. As composer Virgil Thomson declared, Boulanger was “a one-woman graduate school so powerful and so permeating that legend credits every U.S. town with two things – a five-and-dime and a Boulanger pupil.” Boulanger was born in Paris of a musical family, where her father, Ernest Boulanger, like his father before him, taught singing at the Paris Conservatoire. Her mother, Raissa, a Russian-born princess, was one of her father’s pupils. She received her first music lessons from her, and could read music at the age of five.

Where did the French Boulanger family come from? What is the French coat of arms/family crest? When did the Boulanger family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?
Changes of spelling have occurred in most surnames. The earliest explanation is that during the early development of the French language , names were not yet fixed in spelling. Usually a person gave his version of his name, phonetically, to a scribe, a priest, or a recorder. This depended on accent, and local accents frequently changed the spelling of a name. Some variables were adopted by different branches of the family name. Hence, there are some spelling variations of the name Boulanger, including Belanger, Belangée, Bellanger, Belenger, Baranger, Barranger, Barringer, Bellenger, Bellinguier, Beranger, Beringer, Beringier, Beringuier, Bezanger, Boulanger, Belanget, Bellanget, Belenget, Bellenget, Bellinger and many more. First found in Normandy , where they were seated from ancient times.
