DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY GETS REPEATED OVATIONS IN MIAMI
    By Lawrence Budmen
The charismatic Siberian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky returned to Miami with nothing less than a mini-history of Russian music, presented by the Concert Association of Florida on Friday at the Knight Concert Hall. With a substantial orchestra, chorus, and folk ensemble providing support, Hvorostovsky’ s traveling variety show did not lack ambition, spanning three centuries of sacred and secular composition.
Mining some of the same liturgical riches offered by the Russian Patriarchate Choir in the same hall the previous week, Moscow’s Academy of Choral Art opened with the sculpted classicism of the Cherubic Hymn by Dimitri Bortniansky. This youthful group produced choral sonorities of remarkable depth and range, the earthy altos and black toned basses offering a textbook example of Russian vocal technique.
Joining the choir for acappella renditions of three sacred works, Hvorostovsky unleashed his rotund, darkly molten baritone with fervent reserve, capturing the music’ s modal harmonies and austere texture. His beautiful soft tones held the audience enthralled; yet his dusky lower register had the resonance and weight of a bass.

    29 May 2007
Catherine the Great Performing will be the soloists, chamber choir and chamber ensemble of the Clarion Music Society, the recently reborn period-instrument ensemble directed by Steven Fox, a young American who founded Russia's first period-instrument orchestra, Musica Antiqua St. Petersburg. The program includes keyboard sonatas by Galuppi and Bortniansky, a string quartet by the German composer Anton Ferdinand Tietz, and selections from Bortniansky's French-language opera Le Fils rival and Yevstigney Fomin's Russian-language work Yamchiki na podstave a cappella settings of sacred texts in Old Church Slavonic intended for concert performance. In addition, the concert features a setting by Berezovsky of Psalm 51, arranged for choir and string quartet by Sarti. Fox discovered the manuscript for this work in London last year. "The Eastern Enlightenment: Russian Jewels from the Court of Catherine the Great" begins at 8 p.m. at Weill Recital Hall, just to the left of Carnegie Hall's main entrance on West 57th Street. Sweet Adelines convention cancelled
From the Sweet Adelines web site We closely monitored the situation in New Orleans and the surrounding areas in relation to Hurricane Katrina. In consultation with Conferon and various New Orleans officials, we have made a decision to not hold the convention in New Orleans. Our goal, if possible, is to hold the convention in an alternative location over the same dates, October 4-8, 2005. As soon as we are able to obtain additional information, we will notify the membership via the Web site and e-mails. Our biggest concern right now is for the safety of our members and other residents in the area. Our thoughts and heartfelt concern are extended to them. Posted by acapnews at 2:21 PM

A Moscow Choir Fills In for Mozart's Ignorance of Russia
New York Times For next summer's Mostly Mozart Festival maybe Louis Langrée, the music director, should simply dispense with the idea of giving the programs a thematic link. This season's theme, "Traveling With Mozart," was marginally interesting if somewhat gimmicky. What mattered more is that besides again proving himself a dynamic conductor, Mr. Langrée demonstrated a knack for putting together interesting programs, theme or no theme. Actually, the most intriguing programs were those with the least connection to the "Traveling With Mozart" focus, including the concerts that concluded the festival so successfully on Friday and Saturday nights.

This is a readable account of the composer's life, based on scholarly research but intended for the general reader as well as those who are already connoisseurs of Russian choral music. Russian chuch music has always aroused interest in the West, and in the nineteenth century Russian choirs travelled all over Europe and America. But until recently, comparatively little has been known of the music of the eighteenth century. The most notable composer of this period was Dmitry Bortniansky (1751-1825), the author of a well-known "Liturgy", of the "All Night Vigil" and of the famous hymn "How Glorious is Our Lord" which was for a long time the Russian national anthem, played the chimes of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.
