Dmitri began his childhood musical studies at the Preparatory Musical School in Glukhov, Ukraine, then continued his musical training from the age of eight at the Imperial Court Chapel in St. Petersburg, where he may have studied composition with B. Galuppi. At the age of 18, Bortniansky received a scholarship to study in Italy, where he became a successful composer. He produced three operas in Venice and Modena between 1776 and 1778. He also composed a number of sacred works in the Roman Catholic tradition, including a highly regarded setting of the "Ave Maria" (1775). After ten years in Western Europe, Bortniansky returned to Russia in 1779 and was appointed Kapellmeister to the Imperial Court Chapel Choir. In 1796 Tsar Paul I promoted him to Director of Vocal Music and in 1801 he was appointed Director of the Imperial Court Chapel. Bortniansky's position at the Court Chapel and prominence as a composer gave him enormous influence over the trends in Russian sacred choral music style throughout the Empire. He was the first Director who had the power of censorship in church music, which influenced the destiny of Russian sacred choral music well beyond his death in 1825. Bortniansky's output is large. His works show the influence of his decade of study in Italy in the skillful use of counterpoint and lyricism. After his return to Russia, Bortniansky composed at least four operas for the Court and numerous sacred works which include 41 anthems for 3-4 voices, 26 anthems for double chorus, 35 choral concertos for four voices, 10 choral concertos for double chorus, five hymns, a setting of the "Liturgy", a "Cherubic Hymn", secular cantatas, songs, orchestral and chamber works, and piano music. Concerning the present concerto, Tchaikovsky added the following footnote to his 1885 deition of Bortniansky's complete concertos: "I consider this to be the best of all thirty five of them." To western choirs Bortniansky's best known work is the hymntune "St. Petersburg" ("Before thy throne, O God, we kneel").
