A native of Chicago , Bonds grew up in a home visited by many of the leading black intellectuals of the era; among houseguests were soprano Abbie Mitchell and composers Florence Price and Will Marion Cook . Bonds showed an early aptitude for composition, writing her first work, Marquette Street Blues , at the age of five. Her first study in music came when she took piano lessons from her mother. While still in school, she studied composition with Price and with William Dawson . Bonds worked as an accompanist for dances and singers in various shows and supper clubs around Chicago; she also copied music parts for other composers, and became involved with the National Association of Negro Musicians Upon her high school graduation, Bonds became one of the few black students at Northwestern University . Her song "Sea-Ghost" won a Wanamaker Award in 1932; two years later, at the age of 21, she left Northwestern with a

Margaret Bonds On this date in 1913, Margaret Bonds was born. From Chicago, Illinois, she was an African-American pianist and composer.
Bonds’ mother Estella was a church organist and pianist whose home would frequent guests including Florence B. Price and Will Marion Cook. Bond received her Bachelors degree from Northwestern University and continued graduate studies at Juilliard School of Music in New York City. During her illustrious career, Bonds taught at the American Theater Wing and performed with a number of orchestras, including the Women’s Symphony, the New York Symphony and the Scranton (Pennsylvania) Philharmonic. Bonds was also the first Black guest soloist with the Chicago Symphony and the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933.
From 1968 to 1972, she worked with the inner city Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Musically, Bonds’ works for piano and orchestra are programmatic, and each depicts her sense of ethnic identity through her use of jazz harmonies, spiritual materials, and social themes. Margaret Bonds died in Los Angeles on April 26, 1972.

Margaret Bonds
b. 1913-1972
As a composer, pianist, and teacher, Margaret Bonds was fortunate to receive wide acclaim in her own lifetime. Her talents as a composer were lavished on such varied genres as choral works, orchestral works, piano pieces, popular songs, and art songs. Having been personally acquainted with the most significant Black artists of her day, she learned a great deal about the voice through association with such great singers as Abbie Mitchell, Hortense Love, Adele Addison, Betty Allen, Eugene Brice, Lawrence Winters, Carol Brice, and Leontyne Price. These ties coupled with her extraordinary talents as a concert pianist lend themselves well to the craftsmanship found in her various songs and spiritual arrangements. The most popular of her songs happen to be the ones that are most accessible in publication. Three Dream Portraits, a song cycle of poetry by Langston Hughes, is popularly available in the Anthology of Art Songs by Black American Composers. It was originally published by G. Ricordi in 1959. The difficulty level for singer and pianist is medium to medium-difficult, owing to sweeping vocal lines, dramatic climaxes, complicated rhythms in the accompaniment, and the necessity for well executed ensemble. The cycle appears in the Patterson Anthology in the low key. A high key version does exist, but it is harder (though not impossible) to locate.

Margaret Bonds, 1913-1972 Margaret Bonds earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music from Northwestern University and continued her study at Julliard. She was influential in contributing to the resurgence of public appreciation for spirituals. In 1932, at age 19, she earned the Wanamaker Foundation Prize for her song Sea Ghost . Bonds became the first black American soloist to appear with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1933 when she performed Piano Concerto in F Minor at the 1933 World's Fair. In 1939 she went to New York City where she worked as an editor in the Clarence Williams music publishing firm and began to compose popular songs. Although she was only moderately successful as a pop composer, her career as a concert composer is significant. Primarily a composer of vocal music, her most famous arrangements include He's Got the Whole World in His Hands , musical compositions of Langston Hughes's poems, The Negro Speaks of Rivers and The Ballad of the Brown King , and Countee Cullen's To a Brown girl Dead . She received a Rosenwald Fellowship, toured, and performed a piano duet with Gerald Cook on radio broadcasts. In the 1960s, her compositions and were commissioned and recorded by Leontyne Price. In 1965, during the march on Montgomery, she composed
