Surely, Berlioz was unfair to him, when he describes Boieldieu in his Memoirs . The reality stays as far as he reported it, and also as some biographers, especially Faure, drew up. In the chapter XXV of his Memoirs , Berlioz relates a talk he had with Boieldieu, just after the 1829 Prix de Rome
Dame Blanche In a way, Boieldieu brought up this concerto to a summit in the kind. Taking the division in three movements, he gave an astonishing fullness to the first (in C major), refined the traditional lied devoted to second movements and linked it, with a cadenza (who had to be normally placed at the end of the first movement), to the the final rondo in the key of C minor. By closing the concerto in a minor key, regardless to the major one of the first movement, Boieldieu escapes from the conventions of classicism. It is a romantic tone.

Success in Paris was followed by failure in marriage and a period as director of French opera at the Russian court in St. Petersburg, whence he returned to Paris in 1811, after some eight years of absence. By the time of his death in 1834 he had gone some way towards upholding French comic opera traditions against the inroads of the more popular Italian comedy of Rossini François-Adrien Boieldieu Works The overture to the opera "Le calife de Bagdad" (The Calif of Baghdad) remains a popular concert item, with "La dame blanche" (The White Lady), based on Sir Walter Scott. FRANCOIS ADRIEN BOIELDIEU (1775-1834), French composer of comic opera , was born at Rouen on the 15th of December 1775. He received his first musical education from M. Broche, the cathedral organist, who appears to have treated him very harshly. He began composing songs and chamber music at a very early age - his first opera, La Fille coupable (the libretto by his father), and his second opera, Rosalie et Myrza, being produced on the stage of Rouen in 1795. Not satisfied with his local success he went to Paris in 1795. His scores were submitted to Cherubini, Mehul and others, but met with little approbation. Grand opera was the order of the day. Boieldieu had to fall back on his talent as a pianoforte -player for a livelihood. Success came at last from an unexpected source. P. J. Garat, a fashionable singer of the period, admired Boieldieu's touch on the piano, and made him his accompanist. In the drawing-rooms of the Directoire Garat sang the charming songs and ballads with which the young composer supplied him. Thus Boieldieu's reputation gradually extended to wider circles. In 1796

Born under the Ancien R©gime in Rouen , Boieldieu received his musical education first from the choirmaster and then from the organist of the local cathedral . During the Reign of Terror , Rouen was one of the few towns to maintain a significant musical life and in a series of concerts was organised featuring the celebrated violinist Piere Rode and the tenor Pierre-Jean Garat. It was during this time that Boieldieu composed his earliest works to texts written by his father ( La fille coupable in , followed by Rosalie and Mirza in ). They brought him immediate success. During the Revolutionary period, Boieldieu left for Paris and wisely started work as a piano tuner. At this time, the Op©ra-Comique was the only theatre to offer opportunities for the hybrid works of the same name, close to classic opera, but containing spoken dialogue. The most typical work of the genre was Cherubini 's M©d©e (1797). Op©ra-comique, traditionally performed at the Salle Favart, was also staged at the Th©¢tre de Monsieur from 1789. In 1791, the company set up home in a new theatre, the

Biography
Perhaps the most significant composer in France in the early decades of the nineteenth century, Fran§ois-Adrien Boieldieu wrote comic operas that were among the best-known and most-performed of his day. His felicitous melodic sense led his contemporaries to dub him "the French Mozart Boieldieu's first music teacher was Urbain Cordonnier, the children's choirmaster at Rouen Cathedral. Even before he learned to read music, Boieldieu was taking part in church music performances, learning the music by ear. Later Boieldieu studied organ and piano with Charles Broche. In 1791, he was appointed organist at the church of St. Andr© in Rouen. At about this time he also started composing, and in 1793 his first opera La fille coupable with a libretto by his father was performed in Rouen. Before long he was also appearing as a pianist, including some of his own works in his programs. In the summer of 1796 Boieldieu moved to Paris, where he wrote several well-received operas over the next few years, including his first great success Le Calife de Bagdad (1800). Legend has it that
